Here is my definition of Styx. Froy you ought to like this, and I am serious about this definition.
1. 'Early Styx' = Styx on Wooden Nickle Records & Tapes - Too much JY, too many bad songs. One top 40 hit. I would of LOVED to see them perform live back then!! Overall band/album rating = C
2. 'Classic Styx' = Styx on A&M Records & Tapes - This INCLUDES Styx with John C. ( EQUINOX ) and Glen ( Edge Of The Century ). They had that'Classic' Styx sound that produced Top 40 hits. They( Styx's name) also carried enough'stroke' that would enable them to find a way to get on the radio and to the masses, despite what the critics said about them. Overall band/album rating B+.
If it wasnt for the Kilroy album I would give them an A.
3. 'Sounds Like Styx'- Anything Styx has recorded since they left A&M. You have the 'Classic' Styx sound, but the lineup is different and the band has NOT produced ANY top 40 hits. the name 'Styx' does NOT pack the same punch it did back in its A&M days. 'Sounds Like Styx' covers ANY material from Brave New World onward. Not enough new material to completely judge the band. Too many horrible songs on Brave New World. Overall band/album rating C.

Interesting that you include EOC as part of Classic Styx and BNW not.

Here is MY definition of Styx (I TOO am serious about this definition):That which is commercially and legally recognized as the band Styx -just like I don’t question who is Westinghouse, Coca Cola and/or General Motors, even when owned by a larger corporation.
I consider arguing anything beyond that a waste of time. Deals are made. Dennis cut one with JY & Chuck and however that worked. The earth is not flat, and I apologize to members of the Flat-Earth society, but that’s simply reality.

Here's my definition of STYX
You've got
1. Equinox, Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion, Pieces of 8, Paradise Theater, Cyclorama
2. The live stuff
3. everything else.

Cyclorama has no business among those amazing albums.
KWH blows aways Cyclorama.

We finally agree on something.

I go with Yogi's definition here. My only digression would be that Current Styx should be "Sounds SORTA like Styx".
I might put Styx II in the pantheon of really great Styx recordings, but that is just me. They truly came into their own with Equinox.

KWH was the weakest of all the A&M records, definitely weaker than Cyclorama.

ItsMyLife: We finally agree on something.
Adam: Actually, you misunderstood. We don't! I wrote "Yes, that's your opinion" meaning 'Yes, we understand that would of course be your opinion and from your universally understood agenda, we would expect nothing else'
And in case we haven't seen enough of the same old redundant controversey, I'll say that in MY opinion Cyclorama is superior to Kilroy, Brave New World AND Edge Of The Century.
Then again, you know what they say about opinions...

There you go again, (intentionally?) misinterpreting someone's post. Adam did NOT agree with you, he just acknowledged your right to YOUR opinion.

Early Styx - All albums with JC.
Classic Styx - All albums with JY, TS, DDY and the brothers.
Chaotic Styx - EotC, BNW
New Styx - All albums following BNW.
I think it is wrong to judge music by the number of top 40 hits. I like Edge and Kilroy about the same, BNW better then those two, and Cyclorama better then those three.

I'll take Cyclorama over Kilroy every day of the week.........and twice on Sunday !
The Styx legacy/overall body of work would be much stronger if you could wipe Kilroy and BNW out of existance....good CD's but not worthy of the Styx monkier.
At least in my opinion.
