So now STYX was ready to happen. Everyone was available and in the right spirit. It was amazingly simple to put together. A couple of phone calls and an airline ticket to Chicago and we were in business again.

That was excellent, ChicagoStyx! A great example of out of context quoting to suit one's agenda (and a good lesson in the effectiveness of slanted journalism and propaganda).

Someone else might've chosen to start the topic 'THE REAL REASON TOMMY REJOINED IN 95' omitting the first part.

It makes as much sense as me frequenting an Aryan Nation site (I'm black) or National Man-Boy Love Association site (I'm straight).

Here's the timeline:

1984 - Tommy leaves Styx for solo career thus ending Styx temporarily as Dennis refuses the request of JY, Chuck and John to replace him and continue on.

1988 - After 3 lackluster solo albums and no recording contract, Tommy calls up Dennis about getting Styx back together. Dennis tells him that he has just signed for another solo album and it will need to wait until afterwards but it will happen.

1990 - Tommy now involved in Damn Yankees, can't do Styx. Dennis having already comitted to JY, Chuck and John to reform the band, is forced to replace Tommy.

1994/5 - Damn Yankees loses their recording contract.

1995 - Tommy again makes a phone call to Dennis about reforming the band.

2001 - Tommy can't find time for Damn Yankees due to Styx "obligations".

All of this just proves my original point that Tommy goes where the money is.

Now that he is effectively the leader of Stxy, Styx is far more lucrative for him.

It now doesn't make sense for him to go back to Damn Yankees at any point since it would require a touring comitment of some sort which would take away from his annual summer Styx touring monies.

Dennis certainly goes where the money is himself. He negotiated his way into the highest paid position in the band. So much so that he didn't need to tour like the others wanted.

It's a Styx BB. Dennis DeYoung is as much, if not more, a part of Styx as anyone.

I am not even arguing the above. I know Warner dropped them. I know that left an opening for Tommy to go back to Styx. But, I also know that JDK prompted a Styx reunion and Tommy was too busy doing BNW to be very involved - but HE WAS INVOLVED IN *SOME* OF THE WRITING AND RECORDING OF THE ALBUM. Tommy had a choice of either following thru on his commitments to Styx and CMC, or dumping the recording of BNW (which Dennis said Tommy considered doing in his interview on this site) and the tour and going back to DY. He chose Styx.

That is where it ends. The rest is guesswork. You say he chose Styx because of this %50 touring revenue thing (which I don't think you know is fact) and that he could make more money in Styx (which is guesswork even if the %50 thing is true). I believe he chose Styx because of the 'reunion' factor and following thru on what Styx had already started writing and recording...and I do believe he felt that Styx is what the fans wanted him to do. But, he DID contribute what he could for DY...why wouldn't he?

I did not insist that. I was talking about what was happening in 1998, not 1995. YOU are going on about 1995, which had NOTHING to do with what I had been saying in that other thread. Go back and read the thread.

Of course. Do you really think DY could tour on their own? Nope, not in today's concert environment.

DY had one successful album... "Don't Tread" was, by in large, a failure.

If you can't understand that Styx is a far bigger band, I don't know what to tell you.

Its a toss up but as you can see Styx can be milked for 10 years the yankees only 1 tour , So in the long run the Styx name wins out over the damm yanks

Except DY has four catalogs to pull from: DY, Styx, Night Ranger, and Nugent. That is EXACTLY what they did when they started headlining with their FIRST album. They could do an entire 90min concert and not even touch DY songs.

The DY sessions for Portrait were in the year 2000. Certainly Tommy could have partaken had he chosen to.

Geez, have you ever been to a DY concert? Their set ALWAYS contains Styx/NR/Nugent...and is a mix of fans of all of those bands. What you say the above is an unreality check, at the nicest.

Seems to me that Dennis and Tommy both had a contract for three albums, according to Dennis...not a 'signed another contract'. Seems to me that Tommy called Dennis MULTIPLE times asking about getting Styx together but Dennis was into promoting his solo album (Boomchild). Also, seems to me that Dennis TOLD TOMMY to do DY. Finaly, it seems to me that DENNIS has told the above story several times in older interviews.

He was not forced to do anything. He made the decision to not waste the effort put into getting the rest of the band together. He could have dropped the idea, but he didn't.

No, once again you can't comprehend. You said that DY could play all TN, Styx or NR songs and pull people in. I dispute that. I never said they play no songs from those bands... they throw in a few.

My point it the serious Ted Nugent fans don't care to hear Damn Yankees songs so they're not going to the shows in droves. They're different audiences by in large.

If DY wanted to tour now they'd end up on some hair metal tour like "Rock Never Stops" or something similar because that's the genre they get lumped in with.

No, that is not what I said.

i said they could create a 90min set of Styx/NR/Nugent. I did not say it was realistic to do that or that it would draw people in.

My point is, DY has four bands catalogs to pull from. They do NOT have to rely on ONLY their songs. They do not add a 'few' outside songs. They use about a half dozen or more. They did that on both tours.

They also do not have to pull in every 'hard core Nugent fan'. They pull fans from THREE fan bases, plus their own music. That is plenty.

There are plenty of options if DY wanted to tour right now. Soul SirkUS could open for them. SS could use the help.
