Styx - Back in Time: Dennis on Phil Donahue

Does anybody remember Dennis on Phil Donahue in 1986? On another group they were talking about the PMRC, remember those days? Obviously I'm not going to post the whole transcript, but this is how the guest were introduced. LOL

Phil Donahue: Look who's here. Danny Goldberg joins us. He's president of Gold Mine Records and manages rock artists. You have organized a group known as Rock Against Drugs. You're also concerned, as are the other guests on the program today, about what you perceive to be some real challenges to the freedom of artistic expression. Dennis DeYoung is the solo rock artist with whom millions are familiar, formally with Styx. Styx, of course, is the name of the river that runs through hell and you of course are doing the work of the devil, so we're going to watch you real close here. Jalil Hutchins and Ecstasy join us, from the rap group Whodini. Jalil Hutchins and Ecstasy. Well, you can't be all bad with a name like Ecstasy.

Does anyone have a copy of this on video of the show?????????

In the transcript they talk about the music from Styx, Kilroy and they showed clips from Styx concerts.

Here's part of the conversation:

Dennis DeYoung: That video---earlier on, when the fellow from Styx was going to announce a song it was called "Snowblind". Now that started all this thing about censorship, for me anyway, which was that Kilroy Was Her thing, was on this hit list there was a song called "Snowblind" which was an anti-cocaine song that was written by James Young and myself. An anti-cocaine song.

Phil Donahue: Can you give us line from it?

Dennis DeYoung: Mirror, mirror, on the wall --- no, I can't as a matter of fact.

Audience: (Laughter)

Dennis DeYoung: Roll the tape and I'll see if I can sing it. Anyway, it's an anti-cocaine song.

Danny Goldberg: Anyway, snowblind is like the blindness----

Dennis DeYoung: Anyway, it hwas ruined this guy's life. He's looking in the mirror essentially and he says what's happening, what have I done to myself, how did I allow this devil in white---there's one of the lines---- this devil in white to take over my soul and my life. It was an anti-cocaine song.

Phil Donahue: And it was on the hit list, meaning let's get this?

Dennis DeYoung: First of all, we were on the hit list because of our name is Styx. Right away the Fundamentalists see Styx, devil worshipers, they belong there. That's all, clear cut. And this anti-cocaine song, getting back to the perception, is that so many young people when we played this song live, would applaud the fact that we said this was an anti-cocaine song, despite what the lyrics said, even though we tried to say this is wrong, the fact that because of our society being, oh cocaine, this is hip, this is cool, they perceive it as a pro-cocaine song. So I want to tell you, what I'm to do when I try to do the right thing and the perception is still different.

Just thought I share a part of the Styx Time Machine from Suite :)

I use to have a copy of this show, and the one about Show Me the Way, that was with Phil too. They would be at my parents house in Tennessee, if they haven't throw them away. I'll be going up there at the end of May, so I will look then, and if they still have it I'll make whoever wants one a copy.

The think I remember most about the show, besides DDY's white socks, was a lady asking him a question and, then DDy asked her one, and she named the place where she "was" to have seen them last year. DDY answer was "Yes I remember that show!" to which the lady replied, "You couldn;t have it was snowed out and not resheduled." or something along that line.

Got my computer back "Again" have a good weekend-ERIC

Eric! Tell your parents "Don't erase another thing!" LOL. Those would be cool to see. Put me down for a copy if they still exist.

I remember Dennis and those white socks in an MTV interview. (Not to mention, RTP). I wonder if that was a "message" to his favorite team???

Yes, the part about the lady talking about the cancelled concert is in the transcript too. Sounds like he was funny about it.

Good to hear that you got your computer back again. I couldn't live without my computer

Bugsy - the white socks - LOL

I heard one time Dennis was at a taping of Oprah and she pulled him out of the audience. She interviewed him briefly, told him she was a big fan of his( she was fat back then) he then performed Babe or Come Sail Away.

This happened years ago. Did anyone see or record this. I'm pretty sure what I am writing is true. I cant remember who told me this, but I remember this happening.

I suppose one could contact Oprah and find out.

Since her show is Chicago-based, it is not out of the realm of possibility, but I would think somewhere some interview/article would have mentioned this.

I don't think it was OPRAH If I'm remembering correctly it was an early Rosie O'Donnell show.

On July 15, 1996, Styx were preparing for a trip to New Jersey to
play at the Garden State Performing Arts Center. Dennis DeYoung
went on the Rosie O'Donnell TV show for a publicity appearance.

By the way the other guest on the show was Grandmaster Flash. I have this on DVD if I can figure out how to post it I will. The quality is VHS but it was transfered to DVD.

When my mom died last Christmas Eve, we spent a week back home and I got a chance to go through a lot of my old stuff. Found a lot of Styx and solo articles on the band, pictures, etc...Found some VHS tapes too. They were all unplayable :( They were up in the attic, froze in the winter and melted and stuck together from the summers......
