SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2005--Amazingly, more than 30 years since its debut album, Styx is making chart history once again. On May 9, within just days of the tracks reaching radio, Styx racked up an unprecedented 10 songs (out of the album's 14) on Mediabase's Top 75 Classic Rock airplay chart (representing airplay of current songs by the highest rated stations in the Classic Rock format). "I Don't Need No Doctor" hit #4 and was joined by two others in the Top 10. Three more were ranked in the Top 30. The avalanche of success was kicked off on May 6 when Los Angeles bellwether station KLOS officially added the band's cover of "I Don't Need No Doctor" (earlier recorded by Ray Charles and Humble Pie) to its very selective playlist.
Styx's take on the Great Rock Songbook -- classics of the '60s and '70s -- many of them favorites of the bandmembers and their fans, Big Bang Theory was inspired by a recording session at the legendary Chess Studios in hometown Chicago that resulted in the 2004 download and radio success of its rendition of The Beatles' "I Am The Walrus." Since its 1972 debut, Styx has earned three triple platinum, one double platinum, one platinum and five gold albums. "Lady" was its first of 16 pop Top 40s.
Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitars), James "JY" Young (vocals, guitars), Lawrence Gowan (vocals, keyboards), Todd Sucherman (drums) and Ricky Phillips (bass guitar, backing vocals) are touring the U.S. and world throughout 2005.
