Styx Storms the Charts with Biggest Debut Week in Band's Soundscan History
Tuesday May 17, 10:00 am ET
Big Bang Theory's ``I Don't Need No Doctor'' and Other Tracks Set New Marks for One of Classic Rock's Most Popular Bands

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2005--Amazingly, more than 30 years since its debut album, Styx is making chart history once again. Not only will Styx celebrate its biggest debut week in Soundscan history for Big Bang Theory (New Door/UMe), released May 10, 2005, but last week the enormously popular band made radio history.
Source: Universal Music Enterprises

On May 9, within just days of the tracks reaching radio, Styx racked up an unprecedented 10 songs (out of the album's 14) on Mediabase's Top 75 Classic Rock airplay chart (representing airplay of current songs by the highest rated stations in the Classic Rock format). "I Don't Need No Doctor" hit #4 and was joined by two others in the Top 10. Three more were ranked in the Top 30. The avalanche of success was kicked off on May 6 when Los Angeles bellwether station KLOS officially added the band's cover of "I Don't Need No Doctor" (earlier recorded by Ray Charles and Humble Pie) to its very selective playlist.

Styx's take on the Great Rock Songbook -- classics of the '60s and '70s -- many of them favorites of the bandmembers and their fans, Big Bang Theory was inspired by a recording session at the legendary Chess Studios in hometown Chicago that resulted in the 2004 download and radio success of its rendition of The Beatles' "I Am The Walrus." Since its 1972 debut, Styx has earned three triple platinum, one double platinum, one platinum and five gold albums. "Lady" was its first of 16 pop Top 40s.

Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitars), James "JY" Young (vocals, guitars), Lawrence Gowan (vocals, keyboards), Todd Sucherman (drums) and Ricky Phillips (bass guitar, backing vocals) are touring the U.S. and world throughout 2005.

I thought soundscan tracked album sales.

Nothing on where this places the album on Billboard eh? That will be curious to see.

BBT was #51 on iTunes yesterday... today it's #61.

Ironically - Styx: Greatest Hits Volume 1 is #95 on iTunes in rock.

Wow, that's not exactly saying a whole lot since Soundscan didn't come into being until, what, 1991?

Here is a bit of the history.

Nielsen SoundScan

Nielsen SoundScan is an information system created by Nielsen Media Research that tracks sales data for singles, albums, and music video products for Billboard and other music industry companies. MTV, VH1, and many other cable music channels use Nielsen SoundScan data as well.

Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data for Billboard on March 1, 1991. Prior to this time, the Recording Industry Association of America tracked sales by calling stores across the country and asking how much that album or single sold.

I remember when they started using soundscan for the basis of record/CD/tape sales, the big country and western acts started charting on the pop sales charts. Garth Brooks became a superstar as a direct result of this.

Thanks for posting that article, Suite. Good for the Current Styx. I know they are justly proud. (I do not mean this negatively! Honest!) This is definitely a feather in their collective cap.

Yo Melrose Place,

If you are correct about soundscan and 1991 that means Styx's Big Bang had the best release( whatever that means) of any 'Classic Rock' band in the past 14 years.

That ain't to shabby there Jake, or is it Billy??????

Since now he may have an in with Heather Locklear, maybe when 'your' Billy I mean Idol does his next cover '10 from TV' he can cover the theme from Melrose Place!!!!

Appreciate the post Suite!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure how you came to this conclusion, Knob Gobbler, but if that makes you feel better keep on keepin' on.

At least wait to see where it charts... those ridiculous 8 songs in the 10 whatever don't exactly equate to album sales.

It's all mumbo jumbo.

Yo Sydney,

I agree with ya. You are preaching to the chior. I have NO clue these daze what the charts mean.

' 10 From TV' featuring 'your' theme from Melrose plus select 90210 classics may chart #1 for 'your ' Billy/ Idol on soundscreen or whatever it is called.

The article stated that this was the this was most songs on the chart in STYX's history. Since soundscan came after EOTC for the most part, you can discount that release. That means it outcharted RTP (only 3 new songs-wouldn't have 10 chart) BNW and CYCLO. Take that for whatever it's worth. Also look at the chart itself, not exactly a bumper crop of releases.

I maintain that the only chart that matters is the sales charts.

Getting spins on radio stations means little unless it translates to sales of CDs or concert tickets and the latter is virtually impossible to gauge.

Michael,

I agree with you 100%!!!! Still you've got to figure that radio play will in fact increase CD and concert sales.

Time to go check out some Melrose on Soap net!!!!!

BAck in the old days before Soundscan, labels use to have people (stores) run sales thru on items, then have them showed as returned. They did this becasue no one tracked returns. x amount of cds were sold, but half were returned, but Billboard never knew that. That is one of the reasons Soundscan came into being. Labels were being dishonest.-ERIC

Peter,

You have got to lighten up. Shi t I agree with you.

If you wouldnt of entered this board coming full speed and acting like a total idiot while professing your love for a torn jean 80's icon with EVERY post I probably would of cut you some slack by now.

I kind of look at you as Froy's mini me. The Froyster has needed a sidekick for a quite a while around here. I am now leaving to go and crank up some 'Alan Parsons Project', on the ol'8 track cause ya know 'I Wouldnt Want to be Like You', 'You Lie Down with Dogs', Keep on 'rockin in a free world'.

Remember on Melrose, Peter or Michael NEVER practiced Bad Medicine!!!!!

The difference between Froy & ItsMyLife is one loves Neil Diamond and the other loves Kiss. (Oh, and one speaks english)

Both are intolerant and unashamedly insulting.

Regular charm school babies!

And the difference between the entire board and Adam is the entire board has a High School education and knows how to use quotes,
Play by the rules or get lost that simple.

I did keep going page last quote on Billboard Assembly Line page 1

Yakity Yak a streak....
And waste your time of day
but Mr. Ed will never speak
unless he has something to say.....

I just heard Styx's version of I Dont Need No Doctor on 93.7 in Houston, they had a two fer and it was followed by Fallen Angel..... Just kidding it was followed by Crystal Ball ( they went in the vault)!!!!!

Froy,

I also would like Dennis back........ but as it stands now, not at the expense of Lawerence Gowan. Like it or not currently he is Styx's brightest star. The times have changed, and he is the one that may bring them back. If it takes a cover to do it, so be it. But as of now its his voice that is at the forefront of 2005 Styx.

Still I feel the band could be big enough for both of them ( DDY & Gowan). Now I dont know if its big enough for the egos of Dennis, JY and Tommy.

Gowan is not the problem, but he may be their 2005 radio solution!!!!!

Amen! I liked someone's idea about bringing DDY in the play keys, so Gowan could focus on singing. LOL

Yogi I enjoy your fantasy about how Gowan is the shinning star its pretty funny , The guy copies other people and you have him high on a pedestal.
He is a fillin remember
If he is so great he can go back to his solo career and he can leave STYX alone.

The times have changed, and he is the one that may bring them back.

According to Monker they are back and now you say they are not.

If it takes a cover to do it, so be it. But as of now its his voice that is at the forefront of 2005 Styx.

Next week talk to me about who's voice you hear on the radio
This will be over by then.

Still I feel the band could be big enough for both of them

And Journey is going to have Steve Perry and Steve Augeri singing duets to each other,
Get real the teacher does not need the student around

Gowan is not the problem, but he may be their 2005 radio solution

Ah so there is a problem
Who is the problem Yogi?
