Audioslave singer rips Damn Yankees, other 'supergroups'

Postby fsutall » Mon Jul 04, 2005 1:53 am

A quote from Audioslave/ex-Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell, from the July issue of Classic Rock magazine:

"Where 'supergroup' became a bad thing was in the 80s where you had Power Station and Asia and Damn Yankees, where it seemed like a convenient way to remarket the crap that these idiots already did. And with absolutely no dedication towards making great music or continuing on in a new way that's as vital as something they did in the past."

Ouch! Actually if one ignores the nastiness I find it difficult to argue with his point; it's fair to say that Asia, Damn Yankees and Bad English and GTR for that matter tailored their sound to fit what was popular at the time rather than taking creative risks or chances. (I wouldn't lump Power Station in with the other bands since that project was a departure from the synth-heavy Duran Duran sound.) I still like the songs on the first DY CD but find it almost unlistenable these days due to the crappy '80s production, especially the shitty drum sound.

Chris Cornell calling someone crap, hmmmmmmmm interesting, the next time he wants to do that all he has to do is look in a mirror.......far easier than doing an interview.

The guys in Damn Yankees, Asia and Bad English have more talent in their left bollock than he will ever have. And when he says "The same crap as they have always done" then then slags of Styx, Yes, Journey, ELP etc......What an assole he is......he should stick to singing (I use the term losely) his grunge crap and leave the decent music to others.

Audioslave and Soundgarden.........Hmmm, there's 2 groups that have a truly unique sound ! Yep, they've done more than anyone since the Beatles to change the landscape of Rock and Roll !

whatever dude.........

Don't all of those 90's grunge bands share the same lead singer ? I can't tell em apart !

My sentiments exactly, Darren....What an asshole...You think he would be concentrating on something more constructive instead of trashing other people....

Soundgarden and Audioslave, who blend in just as well with their contemporaries as anybody. Get back to me when either releases something worth remembering.

Just another dang example of ripping "melodic rock" music because it is the "cool" thing to do. I get so tired of it.

Yeah, really. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy spent a fair chunk of his adolescence listening to the very music he's bashing on! LOL!

LOL...the guy is still 'rebelling' against 80's music. That was the 'in' thing to do in the 90's, after Nirvana. I think HE needs to look at himself and realize that he is now in the same place as the very people he is critquing. In 1990 (DY wasn't an 80's band -dork!) that melodic hard rock sound was on the way out...DY was NOT going with what was popular at that time.

Asia was a bit of a letdown for fans of the various players...expecting another version of Yes, Progressive (with a captial 'P') rock. But, they had awesome pop and melodic sensibilities in their songwriting and it was easily picked up by rock fans of that time. Also, Steve Howe makes any band he is in special.

The simple truth is that 90's music has taken a nosedive in popularity and has ended their era...just as 80's music did. Get used to it Mr. Cornell...you are no different then any other aging rock star. Your time has past...At least DY, Asia, and the rest didn't go about whining about it.
