Summerfest 7/5/05 (JY is a dork)

Postby kansas666 » Thu Jul 07, 2005 6:42 am

Saw the band last night at Summerfest in Milwaukee. Summerfest is a great venue. There are roughly a dozen stages all set along Lake Michigan. You can go from stage to stage and see all kinds of music. The festival runs 10 days. Music runs from noon to midnight and it is practically free.

STYX was in fine form. Although JY is a dork. I visited all the stages during the day and the crowd was pretty slim at most of them. I hit the classic rock stage at about 4:30pm where STYX was scheduled to begin at 8. The place was packed! People were camping out for STYX. It was nuts. After a local cover band ended at about 5, I managed to con my way up to 5th row center with a couple of friends. Another cover band played until 7 and then STYX came on at 8. We got the full show including One With Everything, Walrus, Can't Find My Way Home, Find the Cost of Freedom and one of the hilites of the night - I Don't Need No Doctor. Although JY is a dork. After watching the band from the nosebleed seats in Chicago a couple of months ago, it sure was a different experience being packed in to the 5th row. The energy level was amazing. Although JY is a dork. Say what you will about Gowan. But he is a true showman. Todd was a madman. Ricky was solid. Tommy was the master of ceremonies and JY was a dork. I caught something thrown from the stage. I think it was a towel. I gave it to a friend. Did I mention that JY was a dork?

Sounds like you had a great time. I'd heard people were camping out for the show.

And I could be wrong...but I'm sensing you thought JY was a dork. Call it a shot in the dark on my part

Thanks for sharing.

Interesting review Dave,

My experience was much different than yours, though I don't disagree with much of what you said.

I arrived "on the scene" at about 6 pm...at that point all of the available seating was spoken for, so I went and got a bite to eat, hoping that seating might open up after the warm up band finished their set........Nope. didnt happen. No one budged without a buddy staying to save their seat. These were some serious fans!

So, forgetting that my teens and 20's are far in the rearview mirror, I decided I would get as close as I could standing, and gradually made my way up to the very front "row" of the standing section, and stood for another hour waiting for the show to begin, checking my watch every 5 minutes. It was worth it though, cus I was going to have a good view.......of the ASS of the people in front of me ! yup, as Styx took the stage EVERYONE who had seats decided they now had to stand on top of them to get a little better view! #!@&#*%!!!!!!! This even effected the sound, as the higher frequencies couldnt seem to get through all these bodies !!!!!!

So. I decided to move back...when I finally got to a point where I could at least see the upper torso's of the band I found myself ( a non smoker with a bit of asthma ) Surrounded by chain smokers ! At one point I decided it just wasnt worth it, and I was leaving......I got to a bench to rest my legs for a bit through Walrus, which I could barely hear....then they played the medley, so I toughed it out and went back to watch the rest of the show.

As for the band/music a few observations......( sorry, I didnt memorize the setlist )

1. Tommy sounded great ! I am amazed he still has so much in his tank ! what a talent this guy still is !

2. Ricky looks like he is very comfortable on stage, his presence is dynamic, particularly when compared to Chuck P's more low profile approach.

3. Gowan also has a strong presence.....while I cringed to myself all during Lady and Come Sail Away, it appeared the crowd didnt notice or care that DDY wasn't there. I don't need no Doctor truly rocked as the 1st encore.

4. I thought some of the harmonies were a bit off....particularly on find the cost of freedom, but to be fair, I had to struggle to hear it over some conversation in my proximity...the outer core of fans were more casual about the music, it was more a social event for many of them. Some of the harmonies in Fooling Yourself and a bit of Renegade sounded a little off, but for the most part, they were pretty good vocally.

5. JY was a dork ! he seemed to be trying a little too hard to be the front man. Styx should immediately retire Miss America, he hasn't got what it takes to give that song the punch it deserves anymore....
I was impressed that Midnight Ride was in the medley ( in a lower key ) and sounded much better than I thought it could. Enjoyed Put Me On
in the medley too. Oh and retire Loreli too.....sorry, I am a purist !
These Are The Times would be a suitable replacement !

6. Todd is awesome !!

Froy, I don't think you would have seen anything to change your opinions, except for a large crowd that was enjoying itself immensely, and embraced Gowan......It's definately not the Styx we all knew and loved in the 70's ( and many of you loved in the 80's ) but it's a viable outfit that puts on a good show !

I'd like to see them again in a venue where I can enjoy the show a little more though. Bad venue for me.....I suppose for $12.00 ( plus another $20 for food/drink and $10 to park ) I got what I paid for.

Questions ? Comments ?

There goes JY, taking yet another thing from Dennis.

I thought Dennis was the dork?

No no...Dennis is the "preening fop"

But I'd hazard a guess that he held the "dork" role in the band for many people...so perhaps JY "reluctantly" took on that role. Wouldn't want to disappoint the fans.

I am only kidding.

Dennis was "Funny Uncle Dennis" to me. LOL

It may appear as though Dennis and JY try "too hard" sometimes to act corny, but I believe that's just who they are. hehe...

Although JY is a dork.

You just now noticed this???? I have archival concert footage that shows JY's dorkishness goes back many, many years.

The dork can play though. I'll give him that.

I say this with full admiration and respect for my fellow Stygians...But it does strike me as odd to hear a Styx fan calling anyone a dork.

Perhaps it takes a dork to recognize a dork? :?

I agree, Zan. Styx fans are viewed a, uh, "certain way" in some circles, aren't they....I mean "we."

JY's a dork?? Please say it ain't true - LOL

I LOVE Summerfest!!!!

Thanks for the reviews guys. I wish that I could have been there. I decided not to go at the very, very, very last minute - long story. My friends held "my spot" for me since noon, you can see them on the Styxworld site - LOL But I did see Journey last night.

Classic, my friends and their friends and their friends friends and so on were all there waiting since the gates opened to get the first couple of rows. Last year I waited only 5 hours for Carrot Styx and the year before 7 hours for my prime spot for Dennis at Summerfest. NO ONE budges after waiting that long - LOL I'm one of "those people" that have to stand on the benches once the concert starts and I never get down until after. It's all part of Summerfest. I wish I could of been there with you :)

Everytime I've seen Tommy live, he's always been really good (great) with his vocals and playing. I cringe so bad every time that I heard Larry sing "Lady" -UGH. Dennis is the only one that can sing that song. I agree that Todd is great on drums.

I'm glad that you guys made it to the show :) Thanks again for the reviews.

Yeah, I guess I was a summerfest "rookie" the other night....It wasnt nearly that big or crowded in the 90's, at least on the days I went.
Or is it just my bad memory ? I suffer from CRS disease.....

No offense, but yes, it sounds like you were a "Summerfest Rookie" the other night. I will be there and help you out next year - LOL I will show you how to save money from parking and where the best and reasonable food is. I LOVE Summerfest!!!!!! I hope you'll be able to go to Festa for Dennis!!!!! :)

Carrot Styx and former Styx always brought in HUGE crowds during Summerfest over the years. I'm sure they'll be back next year.

To warn you, a really nice person  made me a great Dennis tape for my van. We crank up the Dennis tunes for the ride down and sing really loud - LOL Oh and the newbies have to wear the Packer Cheesehead for the ride - LOL

You have to go, I'm not going to take no for an answer!!!

Good ol' Bar. I enjoy listening to him from time to time when I need a sweet, soft break from some of the headbanging stuff I play in my car.

Honestly, if someone would look at my music collection they would not think I was a dork, they would think I was a schizophrenic (and so am I!).

Ozzy next to the Beatles, next to Green Day, next to Barry Manilow, next to AC/DC, next to Sting....well, you get the idea. And then there is that rather LARGE shelf of Styx/Dennis stuff ....:)

It is with great reluctance I admit that when I need a change of pace, you will find me reaching for . . . . Wilson Phillips

Hey, classic, do you think they could pull the whole song off if they sang it in that lower key? Just curious, as I know you've been skeptical about them trying this one.

ek, I think they probably could........the really high notes are the harmonies, and Tommy and Gowan ( or Ricky, wasnt close enough to tell ) took care of those without a problem.

He doesnt attack it with the intensity of the Equinox version, but I'd prefer that to what he is currently doing to Miss America on a nightly basis.

It would be nice to freshen up the set list in that way.

So.........I'll be big enought to admit I WAS WRONG in saying they shouldnt do that one.

I have Wilson Phillips in my collection that gets a spin 3 or 4 times a year. Some good classical/pop that gets a regular spin is Bond.

Don't even remember if I have a manilow cd.

Amen. I groan every time JY steps up to the mike and asks "Are you ready?" (At that point in time, all I'm ready for is a pee break).
