It is EASY to think in the present. Think back........... now return to the present, and lets rank our favorite members stating why of the band Styx.
10. Ricky Phillips- Is that how you spell his last name?? He replaced a guy that should be a legend!! A key member of ELO or BTO or maybe was it the Infants?????
9. Chuck Panozzo aka Professor Vanish or was he ?????
8. John Panozzo - aka Max Klinger or was that Chuck with the dresses??? The goalie that was the coooolest sailor drummer of ALLLLLL time!!
7. Lawerence Gowan- GREAT GREAT performer. Excellent singer and keyboard player. Currently the TOP star in the band!!!!
6. Todd Sucherman- Worth the price of admission alone!!!! I heard that somewhere, and that statement is TRUE!!!!!! If you can name a better drummer you have never seen Todd!!
5. James JY Young- The ONLY member to appear EVERYWHERE and on EVERYTHING Styx has ever done!! That TRULY does say it all!!!!!!!
4. John Curulewski- What could of and should of been??????????????
3. Tommy Shaw- Was Tommy the key that launched Styx into superstardom or did they all just get better and more radio friendly???? At any rate he is a star!!! Seven Deadly Zens anyone!!!!!!
2. Glen Burtnik- Welcome To Hollywood!!! A superstar that no one knows about. The tree in the woods syndrome. Styx thanked chick for finding Tommy. I thank JY and Denniis for finding Glen!!!!
1. Dennis Deyoung- Put aside Kilroy, musical theatre, and 10 from Hunchback and you have the ONE true superstar of the band. His voice and everything up until Kilroy is what I will always like best about the band. DDY was the SUPERSTAR, who surrounded himself with stars and roll players.and made it all clicked for me up until..........

I like Gowan as a great keyboardist and showman. As for vocals he is great singing his own stuff but should not sing DDY stuff.

LOL! I always get a kick out of the people at these shows who appear to be wearing the same clothing or outfit they wore 20 years ago. Even so, in most cases the clothing has held up better than the bodies in them  :D

I guess we all knew your mind doesn't work that way.......

Why did that come into MY mind ? Must have been the Bra-less tangent that other thread went on !!!!!

10) John C.-Never really liked anything he sang other than A DAY, and AS BAD AS THIS, and most of it was.
9) Chuck P.- Good bass player, loved the line thru Blue Collar Man, but too laid back in concert.
8) Ricky Phillips- Only becasue I have yet to see him in Concert or any thing he has written with Styx. Loved his Bad English and some of his other things. Future looks good in Styx
7) John P.- He could pound some skins. But not as good as......
6) Todd S.- This man rocks. Unsung hero in Styx right now, when it comes to playing live.
5) JY-He has been there from the start, sometimes only in person thou. Had some really good cds with group, and some really poor outings with the group. And when you have only one song on a cd, it better count, which he has failed to do
4) Glenn B.- Awesome writer, performer, singer. Did a great job replacing Tommy on Edge. His songs were some of the strongest on Clylorama. Too bad he is out of the group or he would be at......
3) Lawernce Gowan-True he can really wreck a DDY song( Babe, Lady), but at times can tear into one to (Grand Illusion, Queen of Spades), giving it a new take. Man is a fantastic keyboradist, great performer, son writer, and singer (of his own, other songs, when givin liberity to stretch, and a "few" DDY songs). This man as of now is the future of Styx.
2) Tommy Shaw-Shaw helped put Styx into stardom, his prescence added a stage madman that brought the others in line to being rock stars, that moved around on stage, instead of rock performers who stood there and sung you a song
1) Dennis DeYoung- Without Dennis' songs, all the moving around on stage wasn't going to get you on the radio. Dennis had the big hits, that got the band on the air and into the concerts (Tommy made the shows fun). Dennis was the leader (not always correct in what he did, but he had a vision), Dennis knew the Styx sound (something that kinda was missing from Clyo, but is there on BBT), and Dennis keep the group grounded.

That is my take on the group, MO only.-ERIC

Yogi, what a great topic! I've very much enjoyed reading everyone's posts, even if I don't agree with all, very entertaining. For what it's worth, here's my list:

**Note that I didn’t comment on Ricky, Lawrence, or Todd as, until my recent purchase of BBT, I’ve had no actual exposure to their work.

10. James “JY” Young – I like his early sound but really don’t care for his tendency to scream the lyrics in later years.

9. Those bra-less girls – they were great examples for my parents whenever they didn’t particularly care for my actions. (“But mom, you have to admit, breaking curfew isn’t nearly as bad as what THOSE girls did!” 8) )

8. John C. – With the release of the Wooden Nickel set I’m finding I actually like this Styx sound quite about.

7. John Panozzo – I thought he was a great drummer & particularly liked his stage presence on the CITA video.

6. Chuck Panozzo – I admire him for his openness about his illness and think it’s great that he continues to perform with the band as he can. Oh, great on the bass too!

5. The Muse – Suzanne, Susie, Jeanie, Carrie Ann, and everyone else who inspired the guys.

4. Glenn Burtnik – I absolutely loved his contributions on “Edge of the Century”

3. Tommy Shaw – I like much of his music (both with Styx & Solo) partially because I find his vocal range easier to sing with.

2. Dennis DeYoung – I discovered early on that I preferred his songs above those of Tommy or JY. I continue to be impressed by his mastery of the English language and his use of it to give his audience the opportunity to interpret his songs as they fit in their personal lives.

1. And of course, the cooler on the bus! I can’t imagine any kind of road trip without the cooler! Without it they might still be playing the prom/wedding circuit in Chicago!

Boy, no kidding! JY sounds terrific on the earlier stuff! Could you imagine if he would've/could've kept that up into later albums?

Zan - your picture that you added is REALLY FUNNY on this thread, how perfect!!

Here's my rankings on band members of Styx & Carrot Styx. I'm ranking them with keeping my personal feelings out of it -

10. JY - if he would just be more positive and promote "his" band in interviews instead of slamming all the time, he would've moved up. Too bad his voice went to screaming too, bummer.
9. Larry - nice guy, but singing, um, no thank you.
8. JC - loved Equinox.
7.Ricky - seems like a very nice guy. I don't know if he'll be with the band much longer. He should do a few shows/gigs and continue to work on producing albums.
6. Glen - liked his energy and his clothes - LOL Very nice guy when I met him.
5. John P. - miss him a lot. Never met him, but I love hearing the stories about him from a few of the band members. Seems like he was a very funny guy.
4. Todd, awesome drumming. Seems like a nice guy.
3. Chuck, great guy, all I remember growing up (watching videos and interviews) that he seemed very quiet and very mysterious.
2. Tommy, for his great voice and great guitar work. I miss Dennis and Tommy together
1. Dennis, well for me it's a no-brainer. Awesome voice, great songwriting and producing of my favorite albums.

Sorry to keep the bra-less girls off my list - LOL I was hoping there would be a "nice (guys) ass" thread of rock stars - I'm kidding

I like JY's singing better now. His early stuff seems like he is whinning, to me. As a writer is early stuff was better. His late later stuff, although some good, became predictable. He didn't break that trend untill, Cylorama. Just MO.-ERIC

Classic says:

Hmmm, wonder if Suite has some kind of inside information ?

At Summerfest, he seemed more animated/having a good time on stage, and can't remember who said it, but when they intro'd him, and mentioned the various bands he has played with, it was stated " he's found a home" with Styx.

What would be interesting/amusing to me would be if he did leave, would JY say the new lineup ( with whoever they hire to play bass ) is " The best ever " ???

I'll try my hand at this...

Suzanne DeYoung - I'm sure she's a lovely person. But inspiration or not, I'll never forgive her for the "Babe" thing. lol ;-)

The wives in general - Glad the guys are happy. That's about all that matters in my world.

Ricky Phillips - Nice guy, great bass player. No real history with Styx. Any other professional bass player could have filled the slot. He serves a purpose and does a GREAT job, but overall, not essential to Styx's success or existence.

John C. - Never been crazy about Wooden Nickel era to begin with. John C's contributions to Styx are weak and forgetable, IMO. But without him, who knows what would have happened.

Styx crew/management - Keith, George, Gary, Casey, Jason, Russ, Cookie et al...without them, there would be no shows. They work their asses off every night for virtually no recognition, except the band's.

Lawrence Gowan - Love him. He rocks. He's a front man that steals the show night after night. However, as far as Styx's history or success goes, Lawrence's contributions haven't been overly abundant. Yet.

Glen Burtnik - If we're ranking "favorites," he (and Lawrence) would be much higher on this list, but since he wasn't around for most of Styx's success, he didn't have the opportunity to make more of an impact. However, as they say in show business, "If you only have one line, make it count."

John Panozzo/Todd Sucherman - *sigh* I refuse to rank one higher than the other. John is John. He's the man and legend. There from the beginning, helped create what is Styx. Very nice and funny man. I miss him dearly. Todd is simply the greatest F***ing drummer on the planet. I can't imagine Styx without him, and I wouldn't want to. Ever. LOL

Chuck Panozzo - same as John. There from the start. Wonderful man and human being. A True inspiration. Good, consistant bass player. he is part of the core of Styx to me.

Dennis DeYoung/Tommy Shaw/James Young - These last three are close that I also refuse to rank them above each other. Dennis, fr obvious reasons, needs to be at the top. However, despite his successful track record with "hits," and his ability to bring the band to super stardom (even though at times he was the only one who believed in them), I wasn't happy with the direction he took the band in his last ten years with them. However, he is definitely the most recognizable voice in Styx. Tommy is essential to Styx. He wasn't there from the beginning, which can't make him the most important person either, but his contributions both musically and performance-wise make him irreplacable. He was the poster child for Styx from the day he joined. I question how many fans Styx would have had if it weren't for the sweet-eyed southern boy with the impeccable showmanship fronting the stage during those years. Then of course, there's JY. CLEARLY the hardest working guy in that band. Without JY, Styx would have ceased to exist YEARS ago. I'd say he is the most important member of Styx, except for the fact that his songs never did very well with the masses. So, for that reason, he can't be #1 either. I guess they'll have to settle for a 3-way tie. LOL
