Regardless of who the artist is, what are you looking for when you buy a new cd to consider it worth the investment?

Does EVERY song on it have to be a hit?

Are 3 or 4 quality songs your standard?

Does it have to find a way into your everyday rotation?

Does it have to have at least one hit/quality song?

Does it have to have songs that chart on the Billboard Top 40?

In order for me to buy a CD, I need to know I am going to like several songs on it and not just one or two.

Lately I just download the individual songs I really like and then burn a CD for my truck and put the songs on my MP3 player.

my standards are much lower ( it was an CD of 70's funk ! )

If I am paying ( god forbid ! ) full price, then yes, I almost always know the group and or the songs I am getting will give me bang for my buck !

I havent yet joined the 21st century and downloaded any music....I'm waiting for broadband to reach Green Acres ( where I live ) before even messing with that.....dial up is a drag...literally!

There are certain bands I would always trust when it comes to buying a new CD.......I would always buy CD's from Styx (And the solo albums), Dare, Journey, Night Ranger, Asia, Giant, House Of Lords (Headlining Firefest 2 here in November), and a few others without hearing a note.

Before the internet I bought alot of music from reviews and after hearing it thought the reviewer must be as deaf as a bat is blind and played it just once hence the CD became an expensive beer coaster or if it was an album a frisby.

Does EVERY song on it have to be a hit?

No. Sometimes this is more of a turn off to me than an attraction.

Are 3 or 4 quality songs your standard?

I'd say over half the CD, at the very least.

Does it have to find a way into your everyday rotation?

No, but if it's good, it does!

Absolutely not. Those are some of the worst songs out there, IMHO.

Usually I like to hear at least 3-4 tracks to get a sense of whether I like the artist's sound or not. Once in awhile I'm very impulsive if I hear a song I like. Sometimes I get burned that way (Villians by the Verve Pipe comes to mind). Other times it's great (Bowling For Soup after hearing 1985).

Like Darren, there are some bands I go after without hearing a note. Anymore, that list is down to Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Styx (new albums only, not compilations), and Weezer. Def Leppard used to be on the list, but I didn't care much for their last album.

Finally, once in awhile I'll buy a CD of a band that's coming around in concert to help me decide whether to go to the show or not. I will also sometimes buy a CD at a show if I like the concert.

it's ages since I bought a full price cd, usually borrow, download and copy to my ipod. Downloading from internet is getting pretty risky nowadays, people are starting to get bills in the post from BMI (british music industry) seems they are beginning to crack down hard. Like others here there are bands that I will always buy , STYX, will deffo get the new JOURNEY cd , Schenker has a new covers cd out this week (Tommy Shaw is on it) UFO have a new dvd out soon
Playing at the moment is the cd from DOUBLE CROSS who supported STYX on the UK tour , you guys check them out , great cd , great band

Oops! Just to clarify for me....I BUY and download music.

Most of what I want is available to buy at a reasonable rate and I don't have to invest in the entire CD.

A cd that represents where the artist was musically speaking when they recorded it.

Nope. I own many cd's that have absolutely no hits on them. But they are still well worth owning.

Normally...but if I like the artists' other work, I may be inclined to buy new material without knowing the songs on the new cd. May being the operative word there.

Nope. I have very eclectic taste, so I may buy a cd, listen to it for a while, then totally change what I want to listen to.

It need not have a hit song, but it should have some quality songs on it.

No...however I think that's because I am in my forties. Back in junior hish/high school, my answer might have been different....simply because the radio was where you heard the music you wanted to listen to. It was a big part of what shaped your taste. Now that I am older, I have other avenues to explore for finding my musical preferences.

I download from itunes now. last purchase was .38 special's latest release, Blue Oyster Cult -Curse of the hidden mirror. As for new music I bought and really like "Uncle Kracker"

I'm terrible when it comes to buying a cd. If someone recommends it or keeps talking about it on a website (for example: Yogi, Glen's cd - LOL) I'll end up buying it. I'm an impulse buyer with cd's and Ebay

Gosh no. Most of the songs that I enjoy are not "hit songs".

Nope, when I hear a cd over and over and over, most of the songs become quality songs sooer or later.

Nope, if it's a cd that someone recommended or I hear a clip on the internet, I'll buy it.

Nope, a lot of my cd's have never charted on Billboard.

I just bought Lifehouse's self-titled CD to give it a listen since they are playing a nightclub in Lincoln in a few weeks. Thought maybe I'd go see the show, but wanted to get a better idea of what kind of music I'd be hearing. I also ordered one of their older CDs from amazon.com. I'm a little surprised they are playing such a small venue. They have a single on the radio now and had one a couple of years ago. I guess that doesn't always equal out to selling concert tickets. Small venue or not, booking it did sell a couple of CDs for them
