What "frontman" or "frontwoman" did not achiev equal or greater success when they left the band that brought them to the dance?

Dennis DeYoung
Steve Perry
Lou Gramm
Joe Walsh
Lyndsey Buckingham

But then again Dennis did not leave the band

Depending on your point of view Peter Cetera could fit either category.

Daryl Hall - Hall & Oates

Then there's David Lee Roth (had success, but it was fleeting)

Vince Neil comes to mind.

All members of YES.

They've had some great side projects, but not to the level of Yes.

and

Mark Knopfler - Dire Straits

As a solo artist below that of STYX, but I would say equal with Damn Yankees. So Tom could be on both threads...

I'm not sure DY experienced Styx-like success.....but I suppose that could be seen as a subjective take on things.......

Does he qualify as a bona fide front man ? he seems more on the level of the Bass player in REO who sings "Back on the Road again" to me.

Or does "Legend" status provide a pass into "front mandom" as well ?

Isn't most of this subjective?

Well perhaps because he released 3 solo albums, the lines are blurred in this case.

JY is definitely one of the Frontmen of Styx and always has been.

With that said, he never came close to the success he had with Styx.

I would definately think this list would be a LOT larger than the list of those who DID suceed equally or greater. But it is really difficult to define successes in this business. Maybe the sales numbers aren't there, but if an artist is selling enough to keep doing it, then that could be construed as success. And if the artist is happy and healthy and creative and secure, then that would certainly be a success.

Geoff Tate of Queensryche certainly has not acheived sucess as a solo artist. But, then again, he is also still with QR.

Jani Lane left Warrant to be a solo artist. Not even close. In fact, I would bet that, although Jani is an incredible songwriter for that genre, Warrant without him will do better.

Someone mentioned ABBA. Well Agnetha also went solo. Has quite a few CDs, but would never equal ABBA. And the two guys still work together doing plays, musicals, whatever. They have recently received the equivelent of a Tony for their work, but that does not equal the sales success of ABBA.

Damn Yankees were successful, but since they only put out two CDs compared to STYX' catalog, there is no chance to equate the two.

The list goes on...

I dunno SFNH........he's had just as many charted hits as a solo artist as he fronted in Styx........I believe the tally currently stands at :

JY in Styx - 0
JY Solo - 0

This is why I question his "Front Man" Status....is the guy in REO I mentioned above a "Front Man" ??? I know I know....charts arent always
the way to measure, but is anyone who sings lead considered a front man ? If so , you gotta consider the KISS drummer who sang Beth one, and Ben Orr of the Cars too.......

Classic,

I really don't care about the "hits". In my mind, JY's vocal contributions as a lead singer are every much a part of Styx. True, he never had a chart topper, but he has fronted quite a number of songs for this band, regardless of the member configuration. To me that makes him a frontman, but like I said earlier - in this band he was a third teir frontman once Tommy came on board.

Not like he sang one or two songs, but always has had a song or two on every album.

Hey SFNH, is " Eddie Brickell" Edie's brother ?

I think she married Paul Simon, and lived happily ever after, not sure about the last part actaully......I kinda liked the song " What I am" , and there was one other song of hers I liked off the " Shooting rubberbands at the Stars" CD. Her vocal style was fresh and different for the time she hit the scene.....she had nice Eyes too as I recall

yes, i meant Edie. she did mary Paul Simon, but I thought they broke up.

The sad part for bith bands is the record companies insisted on bringing the lead singers front and center as part of the name of the band and it had a major impact on the breaking up of the bands.

Edie Brickel and New Bohemian

Scandal featuring Patti Smyth

both were fresh voices at the time and have gone into obscurity.

A few others that I can think of.

Paul Rodgers
David Coverdale
Roger Daltrey
Gene Simmons.

Good call. But both are a shame. Patty's solo CD was awesome. And I loved Edie Brickell. But BOTH of these women decided not to pursue a serious solo career as they got married, had kids, etc. If they had continued, I think they both had a got chance at a solid solo career.
