I saw this band at Summerfest not too long ago, and it seems like they've become an "oldies but goodies" band. They'll pack them in at Summerfest where the tix are $12 (or less, depending on the situation) and there are various stages and beer/corndog tents, etc.

But can they have this kind of turn out night after night at stand alone gigs?

People will come see them, if only out of curiosity, "Remember Styx, the band that did that one robot song..?" However, their appeal is waning.

None of their new stuff is any good. The covers album has the band grasping at straws.

And the band has kind of been the butt of many jokes in the music industry.

Perhaps instead of treading water, they should just let the Styx legacy die a dignified death and pack it in.

I'm not even sure Dennis could breath life into this band. Even if he were to break away from doing show tunes ("I'm Going to Wash That Man Out of My Hair", etc etc.) at Six Flags Great America and record again with them, we might be treated to another over-the-top opus : "Mr. Roboto and the Startron Futropolis", or whatever.

Creatively speaking, maybe so. But it still charted better than their previous album and I think it even charted better than their last album with Dennis. How 'bout them apples.

Yeah, especially since there are so many people walking around that are concerned with the Styx "legacy" on a daily basis

I don't think they were grasping at anything. It was planned as just an EP with some special guests and they expanded to the full album as the LABEL wanted. They had fun with it, and it seems the fans did too. Why is that equate to the band creativly grasping at straws?

Exactly. But, the entire situation worked for the band. The "I Am the Walrus" single and video. Having the single out before the album...and it getting airplay and downloaded on iTunes. All of that allowed many of their fans to expect an album...Other 'classic' bands should look at how Styx achieved their successes.

Actually, come to think of it, I could post the same 'junk' at the REO/Foreigner/Survivor BBS, by using 'cut and paste' and tweaking some of the stuff.

The bottomeline is that many of these 70's/80's bands have been reduced to an 'oldies but goodies' novelty act, except for, say, Aerosmith.

Now there is a band that any one of the aforementioned bands could learn from.
