Desert Moon-Suite

Suite, when you have a chance, I was wondering if you could provide the story behind "Desert Moon"..

I'd have to say that it's probably my favorite Dennis ballad, next to the new "Goodnight My Love", a very simple, yet brilliant song..

Hi Black Wall

I just transcribed this itty bitty portion of the interview.

Suzanne: What is "Desert Moon" about.

Dennis: "Desert Moon" is made up, it was inspired by, there was a movie called "Dune" and they asked me if I was going to write a song for it. I started to think about deserts, and then they hired somebody else. And I kept on the idea of making something very cinematic, I started thinking like if I was making a motion picture and I used the idea of a desert moon.

I'm trying to find some articles in print about this too. Working on it

I have a radio interview in which he explains just a little more about the types of books Suzanne reads, which also inspired the song.

Well, we have very similar tastes. For years, if you'd asked me (which you didn't, but... :wink:

), my favorite DeYoung ballad was DM, but I have to admit, I LOVE GML off the Live w/Symphony release. It is my favorite of the 3 new songs.

Love this song. Seems to me he said something about this coming closer to writing poetry than he had ever done before. The lines to me are timeless and classic and that is what makes it such a great song. Well, in addition to being beautiful, and beautifully sung.

Toto did most of the soundtrack to Dune.
Desert Moon is easily my favorite Dennis tune.

Suite, thanks for the new explanation. Actually, I kind of liked your original theory better, lol. This one is interesting though; it certainly says a lot for the development of a song, and just how many phases there can be.

Evil Eyes, there is something very classic about the sound of "GML". I honestly think it would have been a big hit in the '60s-'70's. I actually thought there was a chance that it was a cover, but I was wrong.. Hats off to Dennis, I agree that this is the best of the three new songs, but it also might be the most finely crafted ballad he has ever done, even though it's a very simple song(especially the lyrics), it manages to express a certain mood so well.

I agree 100%! This song captures my emotions so well, it is very stirring, at least for me, mournful & sad and yet accepting appreciation for the past. Even now, without the song even playing, it evokes these feelings in me.

Now THAT is mark of a great songwriter!

I personally like my original theory better too and when I hear that song that's what I think of. A lot of songwriters don't want people to know what their songs are really about. Everyone has special meanings of what songs could mean, not necessarily what the songwriter wrote about. That's what make music special.

Sadie can explain it better of what I'm trying to say :wink:

"Come Sail Away" came in a lot of phases too, that's another story,thread

I did have to know what "Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Eight, Skate, Seven on the Rotate!" That was bugging me for years.

The next thing I wanted to know is in the song "Why Me", what the heck is Rubelator?

It took me years and years and years to find out what "Light Up" was all about (I'm a "good" girl) - LOL

Rubelater is referring to the Rube-Goldberg machine which is a huge complex machine that completes simple and mundane, everyday tasks....There's a picture of one at the House On The Rock just north of Dodgeville....

Imagine one of those Doctor Brown Ice Cube Makers from Back To The Future Part III in todays society....

That's the first time that I heard that one. I remember a few years ago on one of the boards, we were talking about this and someone mentioned that it was an instrument.

I haven't been to House on The Rock for years.
