OT- Which Classic Rock Act(s) ?

OK, here's a tangent off of the Worst Band Ever Thread.

Are there any Classic Rock Bands that seem to be widely accepted, but you just can't get into personally ? Who are they, and if you can add any commentary as to why you feel that way, this could be an interesting thread.

I think every knows my #1 in this category is Prince.....I've never found a single Prince song that made me want to hear it a second time, and many ( Like his re-make of "Kiss" ) are simply un-listenable. If I'm in the car, and a Prince song comes on, I am amazed at how quickly I can change to another station purely on instinct !

Who are yours ? Let's keep this focused on Classic Rock if we can.

Good topic. Nice change of pace.

Top of my list would be Led Zeppelin. Dunno whether it was the unofficial proclamation of Stairway To Heaven as the #1 rock song of all time on all the radio stations around here, but I got sick of hearing it. Nothing else by them does it for me. A lot of it sounds the same and I don't care for Robert Plant's voice.

REO Speedwagon: Take away Roll With The Changes and Take It On The Run and I have no use for this band.

Honestly, there are very few bands that wouldn't be on this list for me. Other than Styx, I listen regularly to very few older bands. I tend to get into bands or music for about 5 years at a time and then move on. I really get tired of hearing the same old, same old. I groan everytime I hear songs like Back In Black or Fly Like An Eagle or All Right Now or . . . (you get the picture). It's not that they're bad songs, I'm just tired of hearing them. I feel the same way about all the 80's hair metal that I used to get into so much!

You don't like "Purple Rain"?? :D (I would have a very hard time categorizing him as CR. But he is an artist with a long career.)

Ya know, I don't like The Rolling Stones. They have about 5 songs that I enjoy. I just do not get the HUGE cult following they have. I think it is a death watch to see if one of them actually drops dead on the stage.

Have you ever caught 157 Riverside Avenue? That one is a classic, but you gotta hear the older live version because these days Kevin has gone rather PC with it.

Damn, I hear ya! I used to be SO INTO 80's rock. I never thought I would grow out of it. But in the last year or two........don't really care anymore. And CR stations play so much of their stuff OVER and OVER again. You would think that every year that passes would increase their play list. But NO. They stick to the same thing.

I agree about the "playing to death" of the same songs from classic rock bands over and over until you cannot stand the song anymore.

That said, I classify myself as a "like some" person. I like some of nearly every classic rock band, but it does not make me a diehard fan of all of their stuff.

I like some Zeppelin songs, some Stones songs, some REO songs, even one or two Prince songs (you get the idea), but it does not make me a great fan of any of these groups.

I like nearly everything by Styx, Dennis, and The Beatles, but, for the most part, I am a cafeteria shopper of most music both classic and new.

I guess any group from the popular classic rock/progressive rock genre I like the least would probably have to be Boston. I really never got into a single song of theirs.

Great thread :)

Let's see, I think most of you know what bands (music) that I don't care for and would rather not listen to. I think all these are considered "Classic" rock :)

The Beatles - I don't care for the psychedelic type music
The Doors - I'm begging the owner of the bowling alley this next season to kindly please remove every Doors cd, or remove the bowler that keeps playing the whole cd's (LOL) - ACK
Jethro Tull - ACK
Rolling Stones - I did see them in concert (free), I change the radio station when their music is on
Crosby, Still, Nash & Young - or any version, ACK
The Grateful Dead - Huh? I like the people that go to these concerts, they're a blast!! Music, ACK
The Who - Exactly, the Who? LOL
Fleetwood Mac - my sister played their music to death growing up, I can't stand listening to them, and she can't stand Styx, gasp!!
Jefferson Airplane & Jefferson Starship - ACK

I just started to get into Pink Floyd thanks to the neighbor kids. I love the lava lamps while listening - LOL Led Zepplin is okay, I can listen to a cd or 2 at a party. Even though I can't stand most of the bands mentioned, I still wouldn't mind seeing any of them (whoever is still around) in concert. 8)

good one classic!!

It all depends on what is deemed as classic rock
I like most of the 70s HARD ROCK bands like Zep, Deep Purple, Sabbath, Floyd and all the various offsprings from these bands. I don't care much for the likes of AC/DC or Iron Maiden although the odd tracks are good. I also deem bands such as Journey, Supertramp, REO,Foreigner, Toto. Survivor in the Hard rock category as well as Yes, Genesis and other "prog" bands
It maybe a USA/English thing but I don't class bands such as -

PRINCE - just a pop singer to me, same as Jackson
U2 - never a "classic" rock band
INXS - ditto
Stones - 60s rock and roll band , no interest
Beatles - ditto , great in the early years if you like that stuff, the psychedelic stuff was bollocks for me
The Who- again 60s pop band turned to rock in 70s,
Elton John - pleeeeezze
Most 80s hair bands

as CLASSIC ROCK
my all time favorite "classic/hard" rock bands are
STYX - who else, they can be HARD, SOFT, PROG , BALLADS, you name it, best band on the planet EVER!!! you all know it (or you wouldn't be here)
UFO- plain old simple HARD ROCK , Britains best
RAINBOW - I love the old Dio era, wizards, demons, castles etc, good old escapism , and the best guitarist in the world

just my two bobs worth

I couldn't have said it better when it comes to songs being played over and over, especially when it comes to paticular bands...For example, the 2 classic rock stations here in Rockford are AC/DC nuts...It seems like every tenth song is AC/DC...Or Rolling Stones....Or Led Zeppelin(And I Like Led Zeppelin)....The tragic thing is The majority is good music (Well, mabee not the Stones IMHHO), but hearing it all the time is like eating pizza all the time, eventually you get sick of it...

Classic rock has never been played much on English radio (apart from briefly in the early 80s) . You will never turn on the radio and hear "rock" music over here, you lucky people!!!!!

Using DeeJay's list...

1. I start with Prince...overrated. Little Red Corvette and When Dove's Cry are about all I can take

2. Reo Speedwagon -Fair, neither good nor bad for me

3. Led Zeppelin - Mr.Sadie big fan....through osmosis I have come to like

4. Rolling Stones - Way overblown status. Some good stuff, but not enough to warrant their exalted status.

5. Boston - few good songs, but not enough for me to invest a whole lot of time in them

6. Jethro Tull....Again, Mr. Sadie...big fan...that osmosis thing at work again

7. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young...I do like some of their music...Suite:Judy Blue Eyes is a good song... Yep, totally agree with this statement

8. The Grateful Dead - Outside of Touch Of Grey, I don't care for them....even with Touch of Grey...not a fan

9. The Doors - I don't care for...Amen. Cannot get into them at all

10. The Who - Has some absolutely solid material, but they are on the eh, take em or leave em list.

11. Fleetwood Mac - I know I am going to get slaughtered for this, but I do not like Stevie Nicks voice. The songs are fine...until she sings

12. Jefferson Airplane or Starship - I don't care for...yep, in agreement again

13. Pink Floyd - I do like them....oh yeah, like them a lot

And 14. The Beatles....there are several songs I like, but I honestly wouldn't call myself a fan.

And, again, knowing I'm probably asking to be shot....never could stand U2

slinking away now....

Born to Run....to me his future work never again reached that level of excellence.

Well, despite my earlier remarks, the Boss is an exception for me. I spent part of my childhood in New Jersey, so you can figure out the rest. I LOVE just about everything he's ever done. I like his live albums way more than anything from the studio. Sadly, I've yet to see him live. He was supposed to come to the Qwest Center in Omaha a few years ago, but it fell through and instead we got Cher

EK, I hope for you that you do get to see him. SIncerely I do. As for me...well I want to be as far away from him as possible. There just, for me, is nothing appealing in his singing. The songwriting is a different matter.

Yep, that same old, same old we're talking about. However, I think there are a lot of people that listen to these stations regularly that don't own much classic rock music. I can't figure how else these stations can continue to survive. What little they play that I like, I already own on CD and can listen to it whenever I want to!

Well, I am just SURE all you Boss fans were simply delighted with the substitute performer :P and lined up to get those Cher tickets RIGHT away  !!!

My take on Bruce Springsteen is the same as I listed above. "Like some" category for me. There are some of his songs I really like a lot and others that do nothing for me.

I don't own a single Springsteen recording, though.

I think his voice is a good fit with his music, particularly the lyrics. I remember growing up always feeling like it was the guy next door singing these songs and telling me a story. In many cases, the guy next door probably had the better voice -- LOL! I confess that I'm sometimes just as much of a sucker for vocalists who sound borderline horrid as I am for those who are exceptionally talented. Case in point: I dig Udo Dirkschneider's singing (from Accept) just as much as I do Dennis'. If you've never heard Udo, suffice it to say that some would say he makes Bruce Springsteen sound like Pavaroti :D

Personally I'm not big on much of what is considered classic rock. I like songs here and there but I just dont get into any of those bands on a big level.

One thing I find interesting though is the difference between what "classic" rock is really liked in different countries. DarrenUK says he detests Iron Maiden and in America they have always received a lukewarm reception. In Europe and South America however, they still draw 15,000+ crowds and fill stadiums even though they are one of the older classic hard rock bands...so obviously well liked somewhere

Anyway, I digress. The classic rock artist/band that tops my list as the one I like the least. Bruce Springsteen. Horrible singer and boring songs. Hey I could be describing most of the popular pop rock thats out today!

by SuiteMadameBlue
I should've added Bruce to my list too. Does nothing for me. The only song that I like is "Candy's Room" - loooooooong story. Wow is that song really 27 years old? Yikes

Also add J. Geils Band to my list!! ACK If I hear "Freeze Frame" or "Centerfold" one more time I'm going to get sick!! ACK ACK The 80's rock station here (I hope your reading this John!!!!!!!) plays it all the time!!

I would consider Iron Maiden more of a metal band, maybe classic metal(?). Their music is okay, I do like going to their concerts, I have a blast with the metal fans.

They still play YMCA at my kids dances and on Radio Disney all the time. LOL

What??? Village People opening for Cher? Total Twilight Zone.

Ek88, We are total Accept fans at this house. During Poker party nights here, we have Styx and Accept in concert - LOL We're hoping that they keep the tour going and come to the States. We're in contact with Wolf  GREAT guy and family

Darren: I've always been kinda partial to the Indian chief . . . . :)

stymike: LOL!

Suite: I might have to sit in on Poker night, simply for the music. I'd love to see Styx and Accept co-headline a show, but I'm afraid the musical styles aren't compatible enough, to say the least. I'm hoping they come to the states, as well.

Ek, come on over any Poker night, everyone's invited. :) We usually have 2-3 tables going, 2 for Poker 1 for Sheepshead, depending on the turn out. Karoke for kids is upstairs, you'll be able to hear YMCA over and over and over and over, etc - LOL

No, I can't see Styx and Accept touring together, it would be very interesting though. Oh, it would be great to add Wolf on the second guitar for "Queen of Spades" live :)

I'd like to see Axl and Dennis perform a Symphony show, that would be interesting. - LOL (I'm looking forward to hearing Dennis sing "Sweet Child of Mine" -LOL)
