I saw "Styx" tonight....

We'll is wasn't exactly Carrot Styx, but I did see the Styx Tribute band "Light Up". I had a few "newbies" with me and they were very, very, very impressed and said they sounded just like Styx!!

There were 1400+ people there rocking out to the music of Styx!!

They played for about 2 1/2 hours and these were the songs. I didn't get a setlist and I forgot the order, but these were played. I left during CSA, so I don't know if they also did "Mr. Roboto" or "Best of Times" too, they usually add those for extra encores.

Anyway, they were very good and it was great to hear some of the "rare" songs that Carrot Styx doesn't play or hasn't played in years :)

Light Up
Mademoiselle - Dog gone Awesome song live
Lady
Fooling Yourself
Rockin' The Paradise
Lorelei
Blue Collar Man

Beginning to Superstars - I wanted the whole song, but I'll take part of it
The Grand Illusion
Miss America
Castle Walls - Great to hear again live :)
Man In the Wilderness - Great job, love it live
The Grand Finale - Great, love it

Show Me The Way
Lights - Another dog gone great song live!
Queen of Spades - AWESOME live!!!
Crystal Ball
Too Much Time On My Hands
Renegade
Prelude 12
Suite Madame Blue - AWESOME - LIVE, love it!!
Babe
Don't Let It End

Encores:
Come Sail Away
????

Yes, from what they (the band) told me a few years ago. Glen called Bobby (the lead singer) about auditioning for the band sometime back in 1999.

This band was also approached to be the Styx Tribute band in the movie "The Perfect Man" along with a few other Styx Tribute bands. Like the band Muddflapp (LOL)

I posted this before, but here is a video clip from one of their shows, singing "Come Sail Away". I'm working on interviewing the band for my little tv show, we taped them in concert last year.

I'm loaded with a lot of "useless" information :)

I watched the vid, they are pretty good!
I take it from the vid he is just a singer and doesnt play keys? Perhaps Styx wanted both?

I still think if Larry ever parts ways with Styx, they should look to Josh Pincus from Ice Age. Fantastic keyboard player, great voice that is unique, but is also reminiscent of Dennis on occasion.

Thanks for the link ..

Sounds like a fun evening.

Cool that they included the Prelude 12 with Suite Madame Blue. I wish there were a way for Dennis to do this in his solo shows.

Question: How does the keyboardist do with solos, particularly for songs like Foolin' Yourself? I notice in their write up on the website that they went to great lengths to re-create the sound of the original synthesizers used by Classic Styx.

Speaking of which, I've noticed at every Styx show or on every live album, the keyboards for Blue Collar Man sound noticeably different than the studio version, moreso than other songs. Can anyone here explain why? Is it just by choice or is there a technical reason I'm unaware of? I have always thought the keyboards (synthesizers?) on the studio version have much more edge to them and sound much better than in all the live renditions.

That would be a very interesting question to ask any of them who were involved in that recording.

I have read, somewhere back in time, that the intro to BCM was just Dennis messing around on the keyboard and everyone liked that rough, for want of a better word, gravelly sound and kept it in the song.

I saw Styx tonight at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA. This place I guess holds about 2,000 people. They played for about two hours or so long set. Songs included: Blue Collar Man, The Grand Illusion, Lorieli, Lady, I Am The Walrus, Find The Cost Of Freedom/Can't Find My Home, One With Everything, Too Much Time On My Hands, Snowblind, Crystal Ball, Fooling Yourself, Come Sail Away, Miss America, I Don't Need No Doctor, & Renegade. I think I might be missing a song or two but I can't recall.

They also played the meloldy which included Put Me On, Rocking The Paradise, Light Up, Sing For The Day, Mademoiselle, Borrowed Time, Queen Of Spades, Superstars, Castle Walls, Mr. Roboto, Heavy Metal Poisoning, Midnight Ride, Half Penny Two Penny, Sing For The Day, Great White Hope, Man In The Wilderness, & The Grand Finale. I'm sure I am missing a melody but I'm sure someone may figure out which I might of missed.

Basically it was a straight ahead rock and roll show which was enjoyed by all who attended. It would of been nice to hear These Are The Times or maybe Locomotive Breath but that's all right. It was a good fun show.
