OK, here is one up for discussion.

How many performers do you feel are a double or even a triple “threat”? By this I mean a performer that is in the top tier as a vocalist and/or a musician.

This person would have to be a truly GREAT performer in more than one category. Not just a superb singer, for example, and a so-so or even moderately good guitar player, keyboard player, drummer, etc. Or an awesome guitar player, for example, but can’t sing a lick.
(Some who would fit into this category, for me, would be Freddy Mercury, Eddie Van Halen, Roger Daltrey)

If you want to consider songwriting ability here, this person must be one who wrote both music and lyrics by him/her self. No collaboration allowed.

Some I thought of:

Dennis DeYoung – Double or Triple Threat – Singer/Keyboardist/Songwriter

Tommy Shaw – Double or Triple Threat – Singer (not a great singer, but distinctive and superb, no question)/Guitarist/ Songwriter

Elton John – Double Threat – Singer/Pianist

Don Henley – Double Threat – Singer/Drummer

Rik Emmett – Double Threat – Singer/Guitarist

Greg Lake – Double Threat – Singer/Guitarist

Steve Walsh – Double Threat – Singer/Keyboardist

Kerry Livgren – Double Threat – Keyboardist/Guitar

Paul McCartney –Double or Triple Threat – Singer/Bassist/Songwriter

Joni Mitchell – Double or Triple Threat – Singer/Pianist/Songwriter


My list is longer, but I would be interested in others thoughts on this.

Hey Bugs....I'll give this some thought and get back to you, but 1st, some questions/comments about your list.

Roger Daltrey as an instrumentalist ? occasionally I'll see him pick up a guitar ( like at Live 8 ) but never seen him play anything difficult....am I missing something ?

IMO Tommy's a great vocalist......JY ? another story....

Don Henley's penned many many great tunes....Eagles and Solo. A good , but not spectacular Drummer IMO.

Kerry Livgren penned most of Kansas best stuff too....when he left, the songwriting took a major step backwards ( IMO )

What about Billy Joel ? Eric Clapton ? Both triples in my book !
Is David Gilmour a Double ?

How about a Quadruple threat?

Prince apparantly was. Pick up any of his albums and it'll say "Written, Performed, Arranged and Produced by Prince." Keep in mind, his words...

Hmmm....a little confusion here.

What I was trying to say was some people are great singers...stop. Daltrey would be one of those. Some are great instrumentalists. Keith Emerson, Eddie Van Halen, but they are not singers.

I was wondering who some of us here considered a person who is at the top of the game in two areas.

Tommy and JY are both top level guitar players. I feel JY is just a supporting player as a singer though, so he would not be a double threat in my book.

I always considered Henley a terrific drummer, but that may just be me.

As to what people's various opinions are, that is what the discussion is all about.

I almost listed Prince....but his voice I don't see as standout. Certainly good, but could he have made it on his voice alone???

Another triple threat, though I am not much of a fan, is Stevie Wonder.

I would add songwriter to Rik Emmett. Most of what Triumph did lyrically was either his or the drummer's but they rarely collaborated. Plus he did all his solo stuff afterwards

Of course Geddy is a top knotch vocalist. Rush is legendary. I prefer his voice over Dave M and DeYoung. Stick with Randy Jackson. He is the most underappreciated talent in rock, IMO.

Zan, come on, you know Dennis is funny, especially if you were hearing his jokes for the first time!! Even though I heard them over and over, I still think he's very funny.

Geddy Lee is one of a kind, vocally!! I agree, Rush is legendary.

Bugsy, add "actor" to Glen, (he's a stage actor too), so he would be a quadruple threat.

I looked at this from the point of view -- would I hire this guy/girl to front my band? As such a great voice, he/she is just the best, in my view.

I do not think Geddy Lee falls into that category. He is a talent, but his voice lacks quality and, to me, is a bit thin. That is one reason I wavered on Tommy Shaw too. Both these guys can sing well, but I do not consider either of them to have a powerhouse voice. But, again, it is what I hear and it is fun to read the varying opinions on this.

McCartney also plays keyboards (live/studio) and played drums on the classic Band on the Run Album when his drummer quit on him.

Thanks I just googled him. Very interesting. I didn't know he was from the Bay Area and I didn't know how big (popular) Y&T are world wide. We have the greatest hits cd, I'll have to take a listen this weekend. I can't think of any of their songs.

No, he admits that he is not a songwriter...at all. He can add to something already created but he cannot create it.
