Today's bands inspired by STYX

Postby SuiteMadameBlue » Wed Aug 24, 2005 1:42 pm

A lot of bands from the 70's have been inspired by The Beatles. Does anyone know if there are any bands or artists of today that have been inspired by STYX? Seriously :)

British rockers Magnum site Styx and Kansas as the bands biggest influence......Dare singer Darren Wharton told me he was a huge fan of the bands 78-81 era whether they influenced him I dont know....

SUITE do me a huge favor.....go to Amazon.com and get the Dare CD called Belief.......you will love it, polished classy rock using strings, pipes etc.....AWESOME

Belief is the bands 4th of 5 studio albums......either that or I can do you a Dare mix when I move to USA....let me know

When you listen to Singer/Keyboard Player/Writer/Producer/Album Cover Designer Darren Wharton he is the guy who I sent Styx a tape off when DDY was no longer in Styx but they had already hired Larry.

Thanks Froy

I'm going to Amazon to order a load of cd's. There's another band that keeps coming up here and there, is it called Icehouse or something like that? That guys suppose to sound like STYX or Dennis too. I'll probably order the Dare cd too, what the heck.

I lost my Return to Paradise cd's in the move, I'm going to order it again.

Let's see anything else that I should take a listen too?

I'm listening to the band Trillion right now, thanks to gr8dane for sending it. The harmonies song pretty familiar to those of STYX in the 80's. Also sounds a little bit like one of my favorite bands Honeymoon Suite :)

Hey gr8dane, some useless information for you, just in case you didn't know. The singer from Trillion Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen, replaced Tommy Shaw in the band MS Funk in 1975 and he was with Toto, which I didn't know. Am I the only one that didn't know this? Anyway, he was touring with the Voices of Classic Rock recently.

Are you talking about the Icehouse of the 80's? They were from Wales and 'Electric Blue' and 'Crazy' were two of their big songs. Hmmmm...I can't see where they sound like Styx, unless they have release something new recently. Or maybe a band that sounds like the name Icehouse?

Icehouse, that sounds familiar too now, hmm.

I'm now listening to a Train cd someone sent me - LOVE them :)

Oh no, is this really another "Ice" band or a blonde joke? LOL :P

Actually I did have JY on my mind earlier this morning when I cranked "You Need Love" on the headphones. I would love to hear that one live!! I was wondering how Dennis would sound playing that one live.

Hmmm, interesting.

He was also part of "Frederiksen/Phillips", along with Ricky Phillips. I think that was mentioned here once before. At the time it was released, it was hyped up as a sorta 'super group'. I should go back and listen to it again...but, it certainly didn't capture my attention for any length of time at all...and I absolutely did NOT think he sounded at all like Dennis.

Also, GTR (with Steve Howe and Steve Hackett) had a singer named Jonathan Mover who some people think sounds like Dennis. I've always liked that CD, but some people hate it.

I also think Steve Wade sounds a lot like a combo between Dennis and Steve Perry...He has an awesome voice. Good luck getting his CD's though. He was in Little River Band for a short time but never released anything with them. He did a couple CD's with Graeham Goble ("Nautilis" and "Stop') and has one solo CD. You may be able to order them from his homepage: http://www.stevewade.com

Suite - if you listened to my "Who sounds more like DDY sound sample thread - singer 2 is the guy from Ice Age

If you were to buy an Ice Age cd, go with the first one called The Great Divide first, Liberation second.

Overall sound of Ice Age is Dream Theater-ish style music with a DDY sounding singer who sometimes goes over the top. Musically they are great of you like that prog rock/metal sound.

Enjoy! I ended up keeping about 6-7 songs of the first two cds in the end. The singing got to be too much after a number of listens

and last...not sure if they are seriously inspired by Styx - but try Vox Tempus. Another DDY sounding singer who formed the band with some of the guys from a band called Equinox (hmmm...Styx inspired?). http://www.vox-tempus.com/ has a full length mp3 you can sample

I will, I'll be playing it tonight again :)
The package before the Trillion package? If yes, I did. I finally went to the post office yesterday (thank god you know me by now) and sent 2 packages to you.

I did and that's why I want to buy all these cd's because of that thread you started :) I'm looking for new music to listen too, I guess I can't listen to STYX 24/7 anymore - LOL

Okay, I'll look for both of those, thanks. I love Dream Theater, I just saw them last year. Nice guys, they liked the Roboto shirt I was wearing, they gave me a bunch of guitar picks and the setlist. There were only a few females at that concert - it was great!!

This band sounds like Dream Theater!! Holy smokes. I like it!! I'm buying this cd for sure!! I love it!! Thanks :)

I saw this posted on a bulletin board today - found it funny and it sorta kinda relates to this thread. The topic was Bruce Dickinson's (Iron Maiden) comments on a stage production of Dream Theater's "Scenes From a Memory" concept cd. Someone posted this as a reply

"Dream Theater is the worst band I've heard in ages- there was another band that did it all before, they were called Styx."

So I guess for at least one person on the planet, Styx inspired the likes of Dream Theater. I'm tryin to figure out where John Petrucci sounds like JY or Tommy on guitar ;)

I love Dream Theater!! "Images and Words" is one of my favorite cd's.

I wonder if they were inspired by STYX. I'd like to find out.

Thanks for posting that :)
