OT - Speaking of Nazarath

Just read this in the morning emails from ClassicRockNews:

For you Nazarath fans :) I like this Dan guy and his attitude!! Now I'm going to have to see this band if they make it my area :)

NAZARETH + BLACK #5 Islington Academy Bar, Thursday 25th August 2005
A re-arranged date and strangely moved to the smaller bar area
rather than the main hall of the Academy. A good turn out and my
first Nazareth gig – a band I have longed admire but never managed
to see live until now. But first we have the excellent Black #5,
whose debut album `Last Few Hours' was one of the debuts of last
year. Due to the small stage and large drum kit the vocalist was
forced to sing in the crowd – can't get more intimate than that! A
few songs of the debut were aired including the rifftastic `This
Petty Trial' and `Down'. A few new numbers as well including one of
almost ballad like pace! The set was marred by a broken drum pedal
but they soldiered on and certainly impressed a few of the Nazareth
fans. I can't recommend this band highly enough as they have the
tunes and talent, they just need that all important lucky break…
Between sets I was amused to hear one punter ask without a hint
of irony, `Which is the house white wine?' Rock `n' roll! Nazareth
took to the stage and played a blistering of classic rockers
including `Razzamanz', `S.O.B' , `Turn On Your Receiver'
and `Shanghaied In Shanghi'. But Nazareth also do ballads so well
including `Hearts Grown Cold', which saw guitarist Jimmy Murrison
take the limelight and of course set closer `Love Hurts'. Encores
including `This Flight Tonight' and `Broken Down Angel' – sheer
classic rock class. Vocalist Dan McCafferty has lost none of his
power and was very at ease between songs cracking jokes, mainly at
his own expense. It's great that Nazareth can still belt out the
classics and long may they continue.

I remember seeing Nazerath back in either '83 or '84 with Toronto and The Joe Perry Project in some club around New Iberia, LA. I do recall that Toronto had a hot lead vocalist woman an a hot looking woman guitarist.

Overall it was a pretty good show from what I can recall.

You're welcome gr8dane :)

My BIL dropped off a copy of "Hair of the Dog" cd. He said it was the best one. I'll plan on listening to it tonight.

"Hair of The Dog" is their most heavyiest, most popular, and most influential. No other subsequent Nazareth album came close to that caliber until 1983's 2XS (not as heavy, but definately excellent quality material as Zal Cleminson made his mark by that time and the addition of John Locke and Billy Rankin helped the band immensely).

After that, Naz's fan base in America was damn near gone except for the die hards and, to be honest, Nazareth's later albums never came close to being regarded in the same league as "2XS" and "Hair" ....... until 1998's "Boogaloo" release. Granted, 1997's "Move Me" had it moments (the title track is a beautiful ballad on par with "Dream On" & "Love Hurts", IMO) but it was 1998's "Boogaloo" that just roared out of the gate from the very first track and it is -- bar none -- the best Nazareth album since 2XS and their heaviest since "Hair". :)

Nice review/recap of the bands releases. I agree with it completely. Nazerath is one of those bands you if you are not too familar with thier music and see them live, you get blown away! A lot like Foghat in that respect.

Oh yeah, alot like Foghat. :D

Sad thing for me is I remember passing up both "Move Me" and "Boogaloo" at the record stores here time and time again thinking, "Bah, it won't be as good as 2XS or Hair!" and I always intended to hop on filesharing and check some of the tracks because hell -- classic rock radio won't play 'em; the jocks try to correct me everytime I requested "Dream On" in the past (.e.g. "You mean by Aerosmith ..." Uh, no! "Sorry, we don't have that by Nazareth!" Well, then get it! :P) so I knew better.

Fast forward to a month ago -- I see a "Boogaloo" & "Move Me" imports for chicken feed. Had the cash to spare and snagged 'em. Popped "Boogaloo" in the deck first and hit play. 10 seconds later into "Light Comes Down", I stop the CD. Before the vocals even started, I stopped the CD and sat there thinking, "Oh no! No, no, this can't be. That can't be equal to 2XS. No way. I'm not hearing that telltale, kick ass blues-rock groove Naz knows best. No! Dan is not going to give me a tingle up the spine when I hear him tear into the lyrics of this track, either. Just impossible. Nawp!" :)

I hit review and start the track over. 13 seconds into the track, heeeere's Dan:

When the light comes dahhhh-ooon!!

At that point, I damn near embarrassed myself in the parking lot with a "Whoooooo!" Catching myself in time, I just start head swirlin. Lovin it. Then Dan got to the "Hay MAMA!!" part and I looked at the dashboard all bug-eyed thinking, "Jesus, that was Sam Kinison moment! Don't hurt yourself, Dan!" :D

By the time "Loverman" started, I knew it was a keeper and I plum forgot about kicking myself in the ass for all those years I passed them up in the first place. ;)

When I saw them on the Boogaloo tour,Dan was joking around if anybody knew that they had put out a new album, and if anybody had actually heard it.He had a nice grin on his face when he said this.

I did go ,but forgot the tickets.Nah,kidding.
They were tight and solid and very enjoyable. The young guitar stud they now have in the band is a young version looks wise of JY.froy, you'd love him.
They played what you would expect,Razzamanaz,This flight tonight,Beggars day,My white bisycle(!)Monker(?),Love hurts,Holiday,Bad bad boy and SOB + more.
I did get the feeling though, that they were at the end of this Canada trek and were ready to go back to bonnie Scotland.
Got an 1 1/2 of solid RAWWK.
I would say there were about 350 in 500 capacity club.
I got what I went for no more no less and I am happy chappy.
See you next year. :D
Psych, wish you could have been there.

I'd have loved to have been there. My goal is to hopefully see Naz and Styx before somebody in either group either hangs it up/drops dead/etc. :P
