DeYoungian or Non-DeYoungian ?????

PostPosted: Thu Nov 10, 2005 10:39 am
by classicstyxfan
Recently, I was referred to on another thread as a "DeYoungian".........Prompting me to ponder the question "Is it true " ???

If so, I'm totally OK with that......but I wonder about it, because......

1. I do not hesitate to launch barbs/jabs at DDY and some of his work, particularly "the softer side" of his body of work & Kilroy was Here.

2. I have at times, praised parts of Post-Dennis Styx work.

Can a person labeled a DeYoungian do these things, and still deserve the
title ?

On the other hand, I much prefer Styx with Dennis, as opposed to " the current keyboard player" ( not very veiled jab at J.Y. )

I think his voice is one of the best ever in R&R, and that his songwriting, especially 1975-1980, is nothing short of awesome.

So I invite you the reader, to help me determine my true identity......am I or am I not a "DeYoungian" ????? Tell me Tell me , Won't you tell me ?

I just Gotta Know !!!!!!!!

-Classic

Yes. A DeYoungian is someone who prefers Dennis to the rest of the band, or at the very least, thinks he was the most important or main focus of her or his love for Styx. When a DeYoungian thinks of Styx, they immediately think of Dennis. HOwever, a DeYoungian can appreciate the current line-up. I'm not sure you're a "classic" DeYoungian, but more of a "classic styx fan." OK, I'm sure of it. ;-)

Now, a person who insists that Styx isn't Styx without Dennis or refuses to let go of the DeYoung torch, I classify as a "rabid DeYoungian." Some cases of DeYoung rabies are more severe than others. LOL

I have a mild case of Deyoungian rabies tempered with a schedule of Larry pills that I take. Of course sometimes I overdose which causes blurry vision, shaking, slurred speech and on occasion manifests itself through very long marathonlike stretches on Yahoo IM.

Of course the DeYoungian rabies is of little danger to the general public unless you're bitten. :D

How does one know if one achieves true and total DeYoungian status? Is it similar to the colored belts in karate?

How does one decide if being a DeYoungian is a good or bad thing?

Who makes the rules for who can enter the DeYoungian guild? What are the rules and bylaws?

Now Scott...who certainly is in jeopardy of being removed from the guild for the grievous infraction of liking Mr. Gowan...still keeps his guild membership...simply by virtue of the long winded Yahoo IM sessions.

Bugsy...I believe she has come the closest to that black belt....Froy having gotten it and then opening his own school.

You'll note...I myself, while thinking of myself as a DeYoungian extraordinaire  , do not meet what I believe is all the criteria to make the highest level. Does that put my guild membership in jeopardy since I speak at times with the COO of the Larry Gowan fan club?

We won't even get into Suite's status in the guild.....

Sadie,

There is no guilt by association. We at the LGFC welcome all comers. It is a slow eroding process of the misconceptions of all things Gowan that we seek. IMing is only but one tool we use to convert you into a Loyal follower of Larry.

So worry not about your membership in the DeYoung guild. We believe that Dennis was a great prophet, just not divine. We also believe that liking Dennis and liking Larry are not mutually exclusive notions.

It ok to be critical of DDY's work if you don't feel it is up to the high bar he and the band established way back when. I don't think to many people on this board feel that Styx is better off without him, in light especially to the point that the most rabid of fans are even admitting that they are touring to much.

so you could say I am a Pseudo DeYoungian.

or a Pawn on the DeYoungian Chess board.

And that I have not, and probably will never reach DeYoungian Nirvana, based on my unwillingness to profess that everything DDY has ever done is awesome.

Hmmmm.....I wonder, would the "unforgivable sin" for a DeYoungian be to say out loud that Styx is better off without Dennis ? or that Larry sings BETTER and plays circles around Dennis ?

I'm not entirely sure where I stand on the "Styx is better with/without Dennis" issue. If I based my opinion solely on what I heard on Cornerstone, Kilroy Was Here, and Brave New World, then I say good riddance! If you ask me to base my opinion on everything else he ever wrote, then I say you guys are crazy to do anything Styx without him. I will forever maintain that the success Styx enjoyed was a result of the efforts of JY, Tommy, and Dennis working together (with the Panozzos chipping in, of course) and am absolutely close-minded to the idea that they would've achieved the same success without any one of those three ingredients missing. (Stepping off my soapbox now). So am I a DeYoungian or not??????

All kidding aside, while I do like the majority of what Dennis has done, I do not find him infallible or without blame. I think the majority of people on this particular board recognize his contributions good and bad to the band called Styx. I believe one can and often is a "DeYoungian" without having to deify him. Clearly he isn't deserving of that.

DeYoungian at it's most basic to me suggests you find some of is work worth your time. You somehow connected to music he made. I think one can be a "DeYoungian" while still supporting the current lineup. For me only, it takes on a negative connotation when the person espousing his qualities does so in a demeaning way to the other band members.

Not sure that answers your question. But I think you have some DeYoungian qualities in there.

All of his musical work is totally worth my time. I'm very connected to the music he made, since 1972.

Yes, it's okay for a DeYoungian to be critical of DDY's work. That's no problem at all, if it's not all his songs (LOL)

Everyone is welcome to enter the DeYoungian guild, however, please leave your carrots at home - LOL  Why only the TRUE DeYoungians can make the rules and bylaws. Check your emails (LOL)

A malignancy? As you and Suite are fond of saying, ACK!!!!

A Lipoma perhaps, but as the Governator Ahnold put so well in his Opus 'Kindergarden Cop',...."It's not a tu-mah."

Nothing a good shot of penicillin can't fix.

Thanks for clearing things up, Suite. I'm even more glad now than I was before that I'm not a DeYoungian, if that was possible! Y'all have way too many weird (and worrisome) rules. Then again, I guess that was the same problem the band had with Dennis, so it's fitting!

I would say a Deyoungian is someone who follows Dennis's tour bus around hoping something the rest of us would find totally gross & offensive would be tossed out of that bus landing directly on their nose and mouth.
