Many people have begun making their Christmas lists and checking them twice. But Mason officials are already planning next year’s Red, Rhythm & Boom Fourth of July celebration.

Mason City Council approved legislation that will bring modern-rock band Styx to headline next year’s festival at a price tag of $55,000.

The band had a number of hit singles in the ’70s and ’80s, including Lady, Come Sail Away, Babe, Too Much Time On My Hands, Blue Collar Man and Mr. Roboto. Their gold and platinum albums include The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight and Paradise Theater.

Styx, which formed in the early ’70s, just released its 28th album, Big Bang Theory.

“To have them come to Mason is a tremendous opportunity for our community,” Mayor Peter Beck said.

Vice Mayor Charlene Pelfrey said jokingly she was disappointed her first choice, Donny Osmond, was overlooked again.

“This is six years he hasn’t made it to Mason,” Pelfrey said. “Styx is a close second in my mind.”

This year’s festival, headlined by Lou Gramm of Foreigner and the band Survivor, attracted about 12,000 people to Corwin M. Nixon Park.

28 CD's/Albums......man ! only what, 15 of em are 100 percent self penned, previously unreleased material......that's a very large percentage of releases with only recycled material....for any artist or group.

Froy, are you saying there is no end in sight for Styx? If so I would have to agree with you. Would you quit a job that pays you over $13,000.00 a day?

OK, question: Some of this would go to roadies, managers, sound tech, da bus.... Or is that a separate part of the fee?

So the 55,000 would be divided more ways than just among the band members? Or not?

If I can find the information, for "soft tickets" where they show up and play like at festivals (I'm being nice) they receive $20,000. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what they got paid for at least 3 "soft ticket" shows.

If the tickets don't sell as they're suppose to for the "hard ticket" shows, yes the promoter loses money. I know for a fact that a couple promoters lost money on a couple of shows. One of those shows they were booked with REO.

Yes I would If I was able to make 50 thousand a day
Like they did when Dennis was around .
But thats just me.

Also there not getting 55 grand on each show
Most there getting 30 so this is a one time thing

I’m not so sure they would be making much more per show is Dennis was in the band. I think a good number of people attending Styx shows don’t know who Dennis is or if Todd is the original drummer. The one thing I do know is that if Dennis were in the band they would be making much less per year due to the small number of shows they would be playing. I think Dennis (since 1984) looked at Styx as something to do as a hobby and not as a full time job.

If DDY were still in the band, they would have access to bigger venues, but would probably charge somewhere between $75-100K per show. With less shows per leg (because that's the way DDY likes it), the end financial result would be relatively the same.

Still, $55K is cheap for Styx! I wish Cumberland Valley and Monroe Co. City Hall here would plunk down the quid to bring them to the Monroe County Fair. Sadly, CU thinks the only thing Monroe residents want is country, country, country. I think the last rock act billed at the fair here was Firehouse back in early 1990s. It's been country acts ever since (George Jones, Reba McIntyre etc.)

I would say look at the numbers from 96 and 97 to base your comparision. Right now Styx is a dead issue only a few markets left.
I just wonder when that 55 thousand dollar promoter gets wind of how Styx sold themselves for 20 just a few months ago how he will react.
I may have to talk to him.

I think I mentioned this in another thread. For at least one of the Styx/Reo shows, the promoter lost a LOT of money with those 2 bands. That's not good. I know at the last Cleveland show,that promoter lost money and majority of the UK shows, the promoter lost money, except for one of the shows. All the figures and amounts are on Pollstar, but you have to be a member.

$20,000 were for "soft ticket" shows, like the festivals. I agree, there aren't many markets left for them to go to in which it would be "new" to the fans.

I bet any money that the current line will change their set list and add a few "Lost Treasures" to the shows in 2006. Just a hunch.
