Styx? Journey? It's ALL Good

Postby bugsymalone » Sun Dec 11, 2005 11:57 pm

All of this crossing back and forth among Styx and Journey fans on these MR message boards (Which Andrew has so kindly provided for all of us to vent and rave) has got me to thinking.

I was a fan of both groups (among others) back in the 70’s and 80’s, but I never saw any similarity at all. Talk about the old cliché, apples and oranges! This most certainly applies to these two groups. Other than having two powerful signature voices, neither of whom sound anything remotely alike, these groups share nothing in common musically.

I always saw (and heard) Journey as a power pop/rock band ; Styx more progressive rock with some pop/rock leanings.

So what is the reason for “comparisons” or saying one band is “better” than the other? I really don’t get it.

There is no argument from me that Journey was the more popular band and, apparently, still is.

Classic Styx fan that I am , this does not bother me in the slightest.

I will add that I wish Steve Perry were out doing what Dennis is doing. The world is currently minus one great rock voice.

OK, I have vented…..and raved a bit, too, I guess.

Well, these two bands were my favorite bands growing up. They both had a signature voice on the band's mainstream hits. They both had a melodic rock sound. They both had other singers singing some of the other AOR hits. The songwriting that made them famous is very similar, vocally driven songs/vocal harmony in the songs. They both changed their sound as years went by from rock/pop to pop/rock. Both bands didn't make it until a few albums after their debut album, those albums, by both bands, are somewhat progressive in nature. Oh, one more thing, both bands are still continuing on without, arguably, the main ingredient to their commericial success, causing these message boards to forever be in turmoil.

well, as one of the main players in the "argument" I agree with your point of view Bugsy.......so why the feistiness ? Because some on the other side take it so friggin seriously ! It's not life critical, it's Rock-n-roll....entertainment....just like these boards.

I prefer the body of work Twigs put out to that of Road Trip. I think Road Trip was, and perhaps still is a great band...but they are 5th or 6th best in my book. Sounds silly doesn't it ? Twigs and Road Trip.....I prefer Styx and Journey.

ah well, keeps the place interesting when little new is going on with the bands...we need some good, new music from the bunch of them, then we'll all have something more constructive to talk about.

Thank you, Deejay.

I guess I don't see the argument when it comes to Styx and Journey because , to me, they are such different bands, each with something unique to enjoy and that makes them stand out above so many others.

Many have their preferences but does that make "their" band better than another? Only from their perspective.

Just voicing my .02 after reading a few things here and on the Journey board.

And I won't be the one who outed you. Bring all your dirty Laundry out into the public eye if that's what you want.

That's the way I see it too Bugsy. I like both groups, but of course I'm a bigger fan of Journey. I never really saw it as being a competition between the two. I think Foreigner was more similar to Journey's style, but nowhere near as good. Styx was always sort of in a class of it's own to me. Dennis's voice and writing was just completely different.

Like I have said all along, I have absolutely nothing to hide......feel free to post what I have said to you privately, as long as you post it all, so people get the context it was said in....and if you choose not to, thats fine too, but stop threatening to do so like it would be such a bad thing for my reputation.....it wouldn't , if in context.

A few days ago, I said I would lay off of you and your buddy Neal, to give you time to lick your wounds.....which I did publicly, until you crossed over here to start things up. I'll stick to that for a few more days.....

Now scurry back to your board, where you are safe for the time being.

Must be some potent stuff you are smoking Dogsi......or some very rose tinted glasses you see the world through....other than declaring yourself the victor in our discussions and spewing some words worthy of a Junior high playground, with a large dose of whining, you've brought absolutely nothing that would score points in a debate....

But keep smoking, and dont take those glasses off I'm sure yours is a very happy, albeit distorted world.

If you'd like to continue this discussion privately, you can PM me...I suspect it has grown tiresome for the general reading public. I'm prepared to give them a much needed break...same goes for your buddy.

Obviously Styx will always be my favorite group  , Journey a close 2nd (GREAT concert last weekend by the way). I don't think they sound anything alike. Both bands, to me, were the most popular at the same time in the 1980's (I love my 80's LOL) Yes both had the two powerful signature voices, big time. BUT, Steve A. is up there too. Love his voice and watching him on the stage.

I always saw (and heard) Journey as a power pop/rock band ; Styx more progressive rock with some pop/rock leanings.

I agree.

So what is the reason for “comparisons” or saying one band is “better” than the other? I really don’t get it.

You can't compare which band is better, everyone has their own opinions on what they like. Hey, I still like "First Time" - LOL BUT if you're comparing record sales and ticket sales, then you can say that "Journey sold more records compared to Styx over the years" as an example.

There is no argument from me that Journey was the more popular band and, apparently, still is.

Again, that depends too, if you want to get "technical". Overall, Journey is a more "popular" band than Styx at this time. Then you can say, but Styx is more "popular" in Canada and yada yada yada.

I will add that I wish Steve Perry were out doing what Dennis is doing. The world is currently minus one great rock voice.

I wish too, but, Steve made the decision years ago, not to tour, make a record or be in the public view. That's too bad. Maybe that will turn around especially after the World Series and being in the public again.

The DeYoung/Perry tour of 2001, would have been the best (to me), bummer that didn't work out.

OK, I have vented…..and raved a bit, too, I guess.

That's all?? Don't you have more to vent or rave about??? LOL

Having recently attended my first Journey concert I can see why they remain so popular for the genre of music they belong to.

Each band is good. Empirical evidence aside, it comes down to preference.

I find that I prefer the new music Journey just put out to that of the music just put out by Styx. I don't know that I can say I favor one band over another overall, but I can say I think Styx has diminished whereas Journey has found themselves in no man's land.I think they are an extremely good band faced with a genre that is fading. I will always enjoy the music Styx put out previously and wouldn't dispute anyone liking the current music.

I think comparing the 2 bands is apples and oranges. And I think it won't matter a tinker's damn about the rest of it. And so it goes...

Diva and Dogsi debate school lesson #1

If you are getting your ass kicked, Ignore the facts, and claim how much you kicked the other guys ass....repeat often. People will forget the actual substance of the discussion and assume it must be true. Its a good technique for saving face, you just have to hope no one goes back and looks at what was said.

In your shoes, I might have tried that too.

AssholeStyxFan Skool of Master Debaters:

1) Pick a sorry-ass NFL team to root for.

2) Ignore records and make a bet that my 2-win team can beat an 8-win team at home with the #1 defense.

3) Lose the bet and then take the low, low road and praise my crappy team while pretending to fulfill the terms of the bet.

4) Send hateful PMs to the winners out of frustration for them making me look like an ass-clown in my favorite forum. Be sure to make fun of any injuries they may have.

5) Go tell mom how cool I am and hope she doesn't put her cigar out in my privates again.

Dogsi, at least my Mother is intersted in my life.. I doubt you can say the same.

And to anyone reading this, go to the journey board for proof positive that I held up to my bet....it's fact, nothing Dogsi can say can change that.

I added some comments about the Greatest franchise over the course of NFL history as they pertained to the current best team in the NFC, and this whiny boy cant handle it.

Nothing I said was untrue, or detracted from the Seattle Seahawks.

Dogsi, you need help......professional help ! you've got issues that cant be resolved here on a music discussuon board. Do yourself a favor and find a profesional to talk it out with.

Please tell me how the Green Bay Packers are the greatest organization in NFL history? 3 Super Bowls.

Hmm,
San Francisco, Dallas, and pittsburgh have all won more. New England has won as many.

Keep going. This is fun to watch...kind of like a train wresck.

Not to worry, you will always have SMB rooting you on because you have the name styx...How sad.
