Blown away live

Postby Abitaman » Fri Dec 16, 2005 5:38 pm

Is there any Styx song out there, that you have official or boot, that the live version, just blows you away. Either by Crowd interaction, or it is just miles ahead of the original?

I have a few, which I name later, but I just got threw listening to / watching a concert DVD I just got, and Come Sail Away is nailed ! The Show is from 2004 (so yes Larry is singing), at Atlantic City, NJ. The whole show the group is really in top form, and by this time, the group and crowd are awesome.

Anyone else have a moment like that?

Another, I'll go ahead and name. Miss America off Caught In The Act. The group just adds more power too it, even with slowed verse. The beginning with beat, it just starts out stronger. But the ending pumps the song up to a new level that is not on the original-ERIC

I have many, some of which I will list here. I’ll just go with live performances, recorded or seen live, or both. (Cool idea, Eric!):

Foolin’ Yourself – Return to Paradise live album – This one blew me away -- fabulous keyboard work, Tommy was great, the whole song really sounds amazing here.

Queen of Spades – Live 1997 boot – Dennis’ 50 year old voice sounds really great. Everyone really rocks out on this song.

Castle Walls – Live at the Beacon in New York. Perfect match of orchestra and voice.

Rockline Medley – In-studio performance Dennis singing, playing his keyboard, sounded amazing.

Best Thing - Watching it live at Chicago House of Blues, totally blew me away

These are a few that stand out to me. :)

Also, DDY's Best of Time on his recent double live cd. Awesome, like the orchestra mixed into it and how ad 58 closes it out. Favorite version of Best of Times-ERIC

Eric, GREAT thread.

By the way, one more post and you won't be MY Personal Assistant anymore - LOL mah ha ha ha

Let's see:

"Pieces of Eight" hearing it live for the very first time last Feb. in Milwaukee. I was SO blown away. That was so fricken awesome, I can't even put it into words. I still shudder thinking about it!

"Born For Adventure" live, on the 1977 boot. There's just something about his live version that I can't explain!! Just love it, it makes me shudder too, whoa.

"Unfinished Song" live, HOB Chicago 2005, Oh my Gosh!! I never thought I'd ever hear that song live and to think that will be the only time that will have ever been played. I was so emotional to hear that and then to see Chuck L. up in the balcony, he was the writer for those who didn't know that.

"Lady" live at ANY Dennis concert, ask anyone that's with me! I can't help it I cry and cry and cry. Then my Yahoo of friends call me and play it on the phone -LOL At the last Feb. concert I was crying and crying my Mom took one look at me and started to cry, we went through a lot of kleenex for that song!! LOL

"Suite Madame Blue", live, the moment, I think was in NYC city, just blew me away!!

"Lights", live (when they were on tour with Bad Co) I was so emotional when I heard the beginning!! I'm like OMG, I can't believe I'm hearing this song live!! I got so into the live song, nothing else mattered. Oops, did you all know I had 2nd row seats for the show?? LOL Just a little secret there, don't tell my DeYoungian friends.

Hmmm...

Definitely Castle Walls Chicago 2003 for me (DDY at Chicago Theater). I was in that audience and was just completely mesmerized.

Boat on the River-Budokkan boot 1982...such great chemistry there

Best Thing-HOB Chicago March 2005...A song I never thought I liked all that much...totally rocked the joint

RTP...Tommy guitar solo...made me appreciate his talent so much more

Born For Adventure...Canadian boot...how I wish I'd heard this one live.

There are others...but then I think I'd be here all day.

Oh yes...memo to DeYoungian Guild...Suite is on restricted access now

I gotta add Suite Madame Blue from the live Soundstage DVD (bonus track version). One of the best renditions I have ever heard of this song. Mesmerizing.

Oh, and a just GORGEOUS rendition of Crystal Ball from Tommy on a live Kilroy Was Here radio broadcast. I don't think I have ever heard him sing that song more beautifully.

My list is getting kind of long.

Oh that's right, the audience was in a trance, it was kind of creepy, just kidding. I do remember that too, OMG, you're right, the whole audience was completely mesmerized!!

I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it!!
