Styx Anthology

Postby BlackWall » Sat Dec 17, 2005 4:49 pm

It's been a little while since the anthology was released, and I'm just wondering, do fans feel like it's a fairly accurate representation of the band?
I think it's pretty close, but I can't help but think that there are some key tracks that are not present. I realize that no compilation of any band is ever going to please everyone, but.. there are some songs that don't seem to really be that essential, "Winner Take All", "Rock And Roll Feeling", "Shooz", "Sing For The Day", while "Young Man", "Queen Of Spades", "Half Penny, Two Penny" and even a top 10 hit in "Don't Let It End" are missing. I think from the WN years, they definitely should have included something as strong as "Young Man".. and if I'm not mistaken, didn't J.Y. also do it for one of his solo efforts? I can almost forgive them for not including "Don't Let It End", it kinda says something about a band if they can leave off a somewhat minor top 10 hit, but instead we get Shooz? Also, what about "Castle Walls"? I'm sorry, but either "Queen Of Spades" or "Castle Walls" should have been included.. How do other people feel? Would anyone else make some changes if it were up to them? I think it's an above average compilation, but it's just annoying that record companies just can't seem to get these things right, ever..

I agree that "Don't Let It End", "Castle Walls" and of course one of my favorites "Queen of Spades" should've been included. I can't remember who made the final decisions on that one, if it was completely the record company or the band too. I know for sure that JY and Tommy made all the selections and decisions on the Rockers cd.

Young Man or Witch Wolf from WN years, for sure. Castle Wall, Don't Let end, Queen of Spades. And should have had a Burtnick sung tune, Edge of Love.... in there somewhere.-ERIC

These guys really need to release a true anthology with unreleased tracks and live cuts we have never heard. The Beatles anthology is a rare treasure. Hearing the two different versions of Strawberry Fields, which were both sung in different keys, then one sped up, one slowed down and magically meshed together to hear the track that we all know. This is what I think all Styx fans are waiting for...get off the road guys and "get er done".

"Froy, I know you're out there, we're going to find you and twist your mind too". Merry Christmas pal, I know you're reading us here.

I agree with what everyone has said here. The Anthology is an ok representation, but certainly not definitive. And some of the choices, as you point out BW, are just inane. Shooz?????

I have NO proof of this, but I always have felt the Anthology made an express attempt to exclude Dennis and include JY and Tommy, to the detriment of the final collection that was released.

To me, the Wooden Nickel collection is a far better way of doing a compilation. Everything was included and remastered, and a bonus track was also included. It is a definitive set.

It would be so terrific for fans to get a really complete, remastered boxed set with rare, unreleased cuts and maybe some alternative recordings that were changed to become what was finally released on an album.

I am afraid I am pipe dreaming!!!

CAUGHT ME!!! :D

Here is a definition of pipe dream. You are RIGHT!

The noun pipe dream has one meaning:

Meaning #1: a fantastic but vain hope (from fantasies induced by the opium pipe)
Synonym: dream

Maybe we could offer a peace pipe to all the members of Styx so they could get together and give us our COMPLETE boxed set with all the extras! (I won't say what would go IN the peace pipe!)

well, when you don't put songs like:
"On My Way"
"Everything is Cool"
"Castle Walls"
"Brave New World"
"Queen Of Spades"
"Paradise"
"Don't Let It End"
"These are the times"
"I'm OK"

on a 2 CD collection and instead put songs like:
"Shooz"
"Prelude 12"
"Rock & Roll Feeling"
"Winner Take All"
"Sing For The Day"
"Dear John"
"One With Everything"
"Man In The Wilderness "
"Borrowed Time"

on it, expect most people to complain.

TheBook says:
"Shooz"
"Prelude 12"
"Rock & Roll Feeling"
"Winner Take All"
"Sing For The Day"
"Dear John"
"One With Everything"
"Man In The Wilderness "
"Borrowed Time"

I personally like "Borrowed Time" on your list and "Sing For the Day", the others I could do without too!!

well, when you don't put songs like:
"On My Way"
"Everything is Cool"
"Castle Walls"
"Brave New World"
"Queen Of Spades"
"Paradise"
"Don't Let It End"
"These are the times"
"I'm OK"

Great list!! I have been listening to "Paradise" every day now, JUST LOVE IT!!! I totally agree with you on this list!!

Here's a list of what I remember about what was being said about the cd when it came out:

The record company(Universal) gave Tommy and JY a list of songs that they wanted included and asked them for additional input.

I rememebr at the time JY saying that the record company would only allow a 2 cd set for the anthology, not what they wanted.

I also remember them wanting to put more from cyclorama, but Universal told them that One with Everything was the featured song on the album and they should stick with that.

They (Universal) were also responsible for contacting other parties (DDY) for input, but Universal had the final say.

Anthology

Postby jimmy19029 » Sun Dec 18, 2005 12:20 pm

I always believe that any Top 40 hits should be included on any artists' anthology or Essential...or whatever they're calling them these days....After that it's up for grabs. I certainly want to hear key album tracks that had heavy FM play. Of course not all are going to agree on the final choices and certain favorites of everyone won't make the cut.
Don't Let It End and Music Time are glaring omissions.
I was so thrilled that a Wooden Nickle one was done and done RIGHT, with EVERYTHING included and some!
Asia did the same thing with all officially released John Wetton era stuff put on a double set too.

What Styx needs is a box set. At least 4 cds prob. 5. One for WN era, two for A&M, one or two for San. and nowadays, plus any unreleased or live stuff.-ERIC

I thought that little box set "Chronicles" came out this year with the albums: Crystal Ball / The Grand Illusion / Pieces Of Eight

Too bad they (whoever) just didn't put out all the albums in a huge box set. That would be very nice and then include all the videos on DVD!!

No, what Styx needs to do is put out something new that isn't a cover, or doesn't suck, if that's possible, and I don't know that it is.. How many GH cd's can you put out? Hell, their audience is dwindling as it is.

Box set..Thanks for the laugh. They aren't quite good enough for a Box set.

Owned.

Look, a lot of bands, REO and Journey included, have too many GH cd's out..and Styx to..

IMO, styx doesnt warrant a "box set." they just aren't good enough, that's all.

Styx is more than good enough to put out a 3 CD set like Time3.
Journey was great, so was Styx. Both bands definately spearheaded their era; and the critics hated them and the fans didn't care about the critics. Time has proven the fans right; it doesn't get any better than that.

Don't forget that "Chronicles" is a series name used by Universal in the rerelease of 3 older albums of current acts. The bands have nothing to do with it. Off the top of my head, Steve Winwood and Aerosmith have had these releases also.

Funny, I was going to say the same about Journey. Talk about suck with a capital S.

By the way, how many Journey tribute band singers did the band tryout before they settled on Augeri?
