REO has already addressed that. They are going out with someone else.

Who? Please say it's not Journey.

I care, Froy. I actually like the current Styx. However, like most of you are not so hyped up about the Perry v Journey thing, I never understood the Styx v Dennis thing.

I wish someone would post a New topic about how Dennis ---rather why Dennis is no longer in Styx...I would like to know without guessing.

I can tell you in one, sharp, content sentence why Perry is no longer in Journey..He quit.

Please, somebody.

You're going to get different answers to that one...depending on who you ask.

There is a long history of debate and contention here as to how/why he is no longer with the band. There are undoubtedly elements of the truth for each story.

How much time you got for such a topic? Not avoiding answering your question.

Bottom line...for whatever the reason...Dennis couldn't/wouldn't tour when the other members were ready to tour to support Brave New World. Some believe he was ill as he stated, others don't. He asked the band to wait 6 months. They opted not to wait. I am skimming over much of what brought them to this impasse. Eventually he sued the band. It was settled out of court with a gag order placed on the actual settlement. Again... I am leaving out a whole lot of things here. They tour calling themselves Styx. Dennis tours as well. When he performs he can promote as "the music of Styx".

If you ever have the time...you can get a whole scope of reasons why he is no longer with the band. Somewhere in the middle lies the truth.

In the meantime...go see whomever you like. At this point in the game, it's the best choice.

i would ad this, that the decision for Dennis to leave the band came to a head during the making of BNW if not before. Tommy has referred to that album as the product of a band going through an angry divorce.

But the whole thing is pretty involved and Sadie summed it up nicely.

I think that needs to be clarified a bit...

According to Dennis, he was told by Sanctuary that they were told that there was not going to be an album...Which Dennis said he didn't know anything about that...and the label had to put the pressure back on Tommy/JY to get the album recorded. Perry, I mean Dennis, also said he couldn't tour...which I am not sure came before the above (causing Tommy/JY to ask, "Why even record an album if we can't tour?"), or after (causing Tommy/JY to say, "We recorded an album and we need to tour to support it.")

The bottom line, IMO, is they were not a 'band' making 'band' decisions. We have Tommy/JY wanting to move in one direction (record/tour for a reunion, ASAP), and Dennis barely moving at all. Release an album, wait six months, and then tour? That is a dumb thing to even suggest for a reunion album/tour.

So, whatever you believe about the truth of "light sensitivity", or anger about selling songs for comercials...You have Tommy and JY being very tired and frustrated with Dennis constantly disrupting Styx with Hunchback, and now disrupting what should be a huge reunion by delaying a tour six months after an album release.

So, they replaced him and toured anyway. Then Dennis sued Styx. So, the Styx stone was cracked by both sides...and I do not believe there is any going back.

My personal opinion about this, is that the so called 'divorce' came about at the last minute. Bandmates were pissed at each other for various reasons. Still, I think they ALL thought the issue would be resolved with the band minus an ailing Chuck touring together in support of Brave New World.

My reasons for believeing this is that the great and in depth Goldmine article came about at just about the same time as the Brave New World release. That article was filled with nothing but positives regarding the band from the magazine authors, and the band members themselves. Nothing negative, or even the mention of a split was discussed.

This leads me to believe that up to the very last minute the band members felt they were going to work things out. Even during the Childrens Miracle Network concert I bet some members felt there was hope as to the band moving on together.

When Gowan actually hit the stage, and then Dennis went to court then the split became official and bitter among the band members and its fans a like.

Let's see who will Styx be touring with in 2006, well for a couple of the House of Blues shows the band Del Castillo will be opening for them. I'm sure REO will only open for 1 or 2 dates, no tour with them. They both lose money together. I'm sure they'll hook up with one or two bands in the summer for a short tour.

While many points made here apply, it does boil down to a simple fact regarding Perry/Journey and DeYoung/Styx -- Perry left Journey voluntarily. DeYoung did NOT leave Styx voluntarily.

And so it goes.....

At the risk of creating Froyaggeddon (the mother of all arguments), the way I see it is The Brave New World album WAS the beginning of this particular sore spot for all involved. Dennis wanted to take charge, Tommy & JY wanted to finish it (with Ron Nevison) and get it out on the street.

Just when the two blondes felt it was time to keep the momentum they'd gotten from the 2 Return To Paradise tours/disc/PBS show/etc. going, Dennis threw a wrench in the works. Perhaps his illness was very real, perhaps it was psychosomatic, perhaps it was a ploy to regain control of the album they were working on, but once Dennis said he wouldn't/couldn't tour, things began turning ugly. Tommy stopped travelling to Chicago to record at Dennis' house. Dennis refused/couldn't to fly to LA to work at Tommy's. The album was finished separately - Tommy's songs his way, DDY's songs his way. Dennis was against the album coming out as it was, and said there'd be no tour.

The band hadn't actually split w/ Dennis yet when they began touring without him. It was proposed as being ONLY a summer tour w/ Gowan. However, Dennis was very firmly against the band going out & calling themselves Styx without him. The Goldmine article came out at a time there had been no legal line yet drawn in the sand.

But Dennis' temper flaired, rightly or wrongly, he was against things as they were. So he sued.

Invite a lawyer into any recipe and everything goes sour.

My favorite pair of lines from 1999 & 2000: When asked about the split on different occasions, we got:

"They wouldn't return any of my phone calls."

&

"They'd been calling me, and I responded through my lawyer."

I basicaly agree with Adam and Yogi. I don't remember any indication that Dennis was completely out of the band until AFTER Dennis sued them. IMO, when Dennis did that, the band was never going to return with Denns/JY/Tommy together - even if he had won.

I didn't see anybody saying Perry was fired or that Dennis quit...But, some of the circumstances leading up to that point are VERY similar between the two bands.

This was from Andrew's interview with Dennis
"So anyway that's what happened. They decided to take the thing on the road and my only recourse was to sue them to stop them. I felt in my heart I couldn't do it and hoping and praying they would show some sense and stop the nonsense. They went touring July '99 and by August '99 I was well enough to say 'hey if you're going to do a full leg….'
They'd been asking me and I called them through attorney's and said I'm willing to sit down and talk and since that time they have absolutely refused to have any communication with me."

Hey Suite,

You wanna know why more people don't post about current Styx? Read the above.

The very thought of me having anybody else to talk to about Styx throws froyline into a jealous rage. Geez, froyline, don't worry...I know you still love me.

I know Monker.

Even though I like Froy, (please don't be jealous Monker), I'm not going to let him stop me from posting about both camps and all the members of Styx past and present.

I do think some of Froy's comments are pretty funny sometimes, but that's just my opinion.

If people don't like what he or anyone has to write, then just skip to the next post.

WARNING - SUITE'S BABBLING (too much chocolate tonight)

It's been almost 7 years and I'm really trying to move on. It's really hard for me deep down because who I know (both camps) and what I know (both camps) and it's a little (actually a LOT) more personal to me. I don't like what happened back in 1999 and how it happened. A lot of people got hurt, not just band members and the road crew but their families too. There has been people (quite a few people) from the "other side" that have really been great off-line to me and I don't want to keep posting negative crap all the time. And then I hear it from the DeYoungian's that I keep posting current Styx information. I'll never win - yippee! LOL I know sometimes I still like to start things but it's mostly out of boredom. Since there's really not much going on that's real big news from either camp.

If people make stupid or even uncalled for comments I just ignore them and keep posting. I'm sure most people on here skip over my babbling anyway too - LOL

I'm too tired to keep fighting over this Styx break-up. I'll always cherish the memories that I had and will still have, especially this year!

Well, bully for you, big man. You erected a birthday thread on the Melodic Rock board with negativity.

And I heard you ride a sheep. What's your point?

Are you daft? Legacy? LOL...That's a grand. If you're a fan of the band, you like them no matter what, but god man, don't kid yourself. Styx has never nor will they ever have a legacy. Sadly, all they are is an underrated, kick-ass rock band that has never gotten any respect by anyone.

Well, I'm happy that you are so proud of yourself! I know sometimes you have to compensate. It's good that you get it out of your system once in a while.

And, they are not doing anything differently then Dennis and the music of Styx.

You just keep washing there cars Monker I heard JY drives Saturn.

Cool...when there in town, I'll wash there cars for them. There, I hope that makes you happy :D

It's nice that JY drives a planet around. Though, I think JY is more of a Jupiter kinda guy.

Your act is old Monkey nobody thinks its funny anymore.

Hmmm, I don't remember anybody posting it was funny. Well, I guess maybe Suite did...I haven't kept track. It doesn't matter to me. As long as everybody knows that I'm your bitch and nobody else can take my place.

Back when my dad was a little younger...he went to see the Pieces of Eight Concert. They were just promoting the album and still had their Grand Illusion Stage.

REO opened for them and my dad said that they just SUCKED....I personaly think that REO sucks as well. But that is me.

Styx shouldn't need to tour WITH anyone as equals...their status as a rock band is such that they don't need another name tagging along with them.

An opening act...sure........how about Dennis?
