Question: Did Tommy Shaw play with Styx for the song Music Time?? I read or heard somewhere that he had bolted for his solo career before Styx did that 'gem????', and that he only returned to wave for the video. Is that true??

Concert Set Lists: I saw the Paradise Theatre concert on back to back nights at the old Metropolitan Sports Center in Bloomington, MN. I am 90% sure of this, On the first night Styx played Babe, but not Lady. On the second night they excluded Babe, but played Lady. Did they do this often?? Also during The Kilroy shows did they not play Renegade? It is not on the Caught In The Act CD. During what tours did Styx drop 'The Grand Illusion, Lady, Babe, and other Styx staples???

Damn, they were good!!!!!!

If Tommy had any sense he would of bolted as soon as he read the lyrics to Music Time nevermind actually playing on the damn thing......

Hi everyone - first time poster, long time listener!! I did not see Paradise Theater, but I did see Kilroy. They did play Renegade. The reason that it was not on Caught In The Act is because it is when Righteous and his men storm the stage and it lasts for like 11 minutes because the band is being "captured". I think that TGI, Lady, and Babe were performed for all Kilroy shows. I saw them on Edge too, and I do know that NOTHING off Roboto was played on the Edge of The Century tour. In fact, during an encore, a tech from backstage came out with a Roboto head on and the fans went wild, but it was never played. In addition fans were literally screaming for Don't let it end, but it was not played either. I cannot remember if Grand Illusion was played or not. Just my opinion, I think all 3 of those songs should be played at every Styx show (well at least ones with DDY). Thankfully, DDY does always play them at his solo shows.

Interesting question. What I have read, Tommy claims not to have been on the record and Dennis claims he was. It certainly sounds like Tommy singing background vocals during the high part "hear it, love it, need it, want it" part.

Tommy said in an interview he did not participate on the record and that he was in New York when they shot the video out in LA. The director wanted him to come up through the table (like the guys do in the video) and he refused. So the compromise was for him to do that very gay looking wave in the fur coat. I think he would have been better off sticking the head in the table.

If I remember correctly - I think Tommy was required to be in the video or Styx was going to get Sued by A&M. His appearance was very gratitutious. Likely the only way they got Tommy to do it was under threat of being sued.

A gay wave for an even gayer song.

Dont you all realize the whole thing was Chucks idea!!!! He had been in the background for toooo long. The song and the video were suppose to be his closet breakout moment, and then he 'chickend' out!!!

Was it really Chuck's idea?? I didn't know that. That's pretty interesting.

My entire last post was a VERY weak joke. I do think it is a TRULY AWEFUL song that borders on being High Time ll.

But still I would like to know if Tommy did play on the actual studio recording of Music Time or not????

Andrew changed the ranking after a few people complained that they didn't want to be Manager of Van Halen when they hit the 3,000 post. I was actually one of those people - LOL I was hoping we would be able to pick out our own - LOL

I truly and honestly believe "Music Time" was an effort to get a humorous, concept video on MTV at the time. It was intended to be silly and nonsensical and I guess Dennis succeeded.

If you look at a lot of the videos from that era, especially the ones from David Lee Roth, they were done in sort of the same spirit, with the garish colors and silly antics.

I personally don't mind the song and I love the nuthouse video, right from the silver, conehead spacemen (JY, John and Chuck) to the fast food, the heads through the table, and the "I like TV" scene.

It is absolutely crazy, but was intended to be that way, I have always felt. Count me in the tiny legion of fans of this song and video. :P
