From the sound of things Dennis Deyoung sure seems to be riding high right now. The time seems about PERFECT for dropping a new CD on us if the material is DDY'Classic' Styx suitable.
At any rate I have an idea for his next tour. How does Dennis Deyoung the A&M era PLUS hit all of you??
Here is the set list: Light Up, Lorelei, Lonely Child, Born For Adventure, Suite Madame Blue, Jennifer, This Old Man Ballerina, The Grand Illusion, Come Sail Away, Castle Walls, I'm Ok, Queen Of Spades, Pieces Of Eight, Why Me, Babe, Borrowed Time, First Time, A.D. 1928 Rockin The Paradise, Nothing Ever Goes As Planned, The Best Of Times, Lonely People, Mr. Roboto, Dont Let It End, High Time, Music Time, Show Me The Way, Love At First Sight, Not Dead Yet, Carrie Ann, Back To Chicago, Lady?, New material, New material, New Material, New Material
** If he does a 2.5 hour show, he will have to rotate about 7 or 8 songs in and out.
How is my idea????
Rock on Dennis!!!! With some GOOD new material you NEVER know if you could hit again!!!!!

Darren: You may be on to something!

Hmmmmmm......
Yogi: What a GREAT idea! I really do think Dennis could keep his train a'rollin' for some time to come with so many terrific songs in his catalog. I would love some more of his solo shots included like "Harry's Hands" , "Outside Lookng in Again", even ones like "What a Way to Go". I still think there is room for "Don't Wait for Heroes" right now.
The new material part sounds just right. Wish he would get those songs recorded and released.

The idea is fine...but I'd intersperse that new music...not leave it until the end.
All in all I like the idea though.

Here would be my DDY 'A&M PLUS' set list:
1. Lady - Dennis could then say how this classic got em the A&M contract.
2. Light Up
3. Lorelei
4. Lonely Child
5. Born For Adventure
6.Suite Madame Blue
7. This Old Man
8. The Grand Illusion
9. Come Sail Away
10. Castle Walls
11. I'm OK
12. Queen Of Spades
13. Pieces Of Eight
14. Why Me
15. Babe
16. Borrowed Time
17. AD. 1928/ Rockin The Paradise
18. The Best Of Times
19. Mr. Roboto
20. Dont Let It End
21. Show Me The Way
22. Love At First Sight
23. Carrie Ann
24. New Material
25. New Material
26. New Material
** 3 hour plus concert****
You might have to drop a few to fit the time element. I have already dropped 3 that I didnt want to( Ballerina, First Time, Back To Chicago) to try to fit a realistic time. Personally, I would drop Babe,Lorelei, and Dont Let It End in a heartbeat, but I know he couldnt drop those songs. Anyway, he ought to do it, What an AWESOME show!!!

Yogi, great idea !
Black Wall, your show is closest to the one I'd like to see.....assuming all of these shows would be sans orchestra ? Id like to hear the song Black Wall instead of Mr Crapoto, but thats just me. and new material too, at least 4 songs !
Dennis, if you are listening, I am the prototypical DDY fan, I have seen both of your shows, and enjoyed them. It would take something along these lines to pry my wallet open for a 3rd time ( unless you finally brought the show to my hometown, Id go to that too )

One truly amazing thing is the guy can do a solo show singing lead on just about each song, with maybe a couple of breaks here and there. I don't think Tommy could take that on, even at the lesser travel schedule. He still gets spelled on leads from Gowan, and yes even JY...if you call that singing.

It's pretty obvious that I like DDY...but to be fair...Tommy pulls a lot more double duty than DDY. DDY doesn't play the keys near as much as he used to...though I do enjoy that he is playing them more now. While I will always be impressed with just how well DDY's voice has held up...I am trying to be fair about the other members' qualities as well.
Peace

Somehow the quantity of back up vocals and the quality of back up vocals they all sing in Styx is not the same as singing lead?
Whether they are singin lead or supporting vocals, these guys are always singing at some level.

If you believe it is impossible to replace Dennis in Styx, is it possible for Dennis to replace his keyboard playing skills in his own band. I understand the frontman with a mike approach he is using, but Elton, Billy Joel, Bruce Hornsby, etc still put on a fabulous show wjile anchored behind a keyboard. Understandably the scale of the show is different, but I'd like to see Dennis behind a keyboard more.

Unfortunately I have not seen Dennis or his new live band yet to make a call on that one. I know Tommy couldn't replace him for a long time during his solo tours, by his own admission.

Not saying or suggesting that Dennis was or is irreplaceable in Styx. I personally wish the man did more with the keys than he chooses to. I totally agree that the people you mentioned do indeed manage very well while behind the keys. That Dennis chooses not to is regrettable, but then again, he seems happy with the choice, still delivers a pretty great show, and I don't have the reasons behind his decision. I just wouldn't want to be the guy in his band playing those keys...
