YOUNG MAN??

Postby yogi » Thu Mar 30, 2006 2:40 am

JY's song with his own last name may be about the best song he has ever done.

It has had an almost exclusive run for the past two days in my car stereo. He and Styx do an incredible job on this song. From the songs lyrics, to the harmonizing, to the progressive finish this song represents EVERYTHING I love about the band. It is Styx at it's finest, and it would of fit perfectly and shined in any of their A&M classic albums.

I do have a question about the song. Toward the end of the song when the lyrics are sung:

' Come home my son
We'll give you a rest
Welcome My son
We'll give you the best
Time stole away
The Young Man
Short are the days
of the Young Man'

Who is actually singing this?? Is It JY??

It does not sound like JY, Dennis, or John C. It sounds closest to JY, but it sure does not sound like him to me.

At any rate it is one AWESOME tune!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I still believe the song 'One With Everything' kind of copied the ending of Young Man and tried to one up it a little.

I count this one among my favorite JY/Styx songs as well. And that is some of Dennis' finest keyboard work ever in it.

The ending, I always felt, would have been much better had Dennis sung it, but JY does a really good job vocally on the entire song.

If Styx wants to mix up their sets this song sure would be a GREAT place to start. This would be a HUGE plus to their shows!

An idea I have for them is that they could add a little Sammy/ David Lee type of competition into their shows.

Ex: JY rips off the first 6 songs opening with,You Need Love he then goes on to play the following:
These Are The Times
Young Man
Midnight Ride
Half Penny/ Two Penny
Miss America
Gowan plays second an adds the following: A Salty Dog
Criminal Mind
Walrus
The Grand Illusion
Gorilla Soldier
Come Sail Away
Tommy closes the show with: Crystal Ball
Love In The Midnight
Blue Collar Man
Too Much Time
One With Everything
Lights
Renegade
Add a couple of new tunes for the encores- One from each

Wheres Glen for my idea????

With DDY!!!!!

For sure! Let's drag out more of that Wooden Nickle era! Of course people in the audience(besides us diehards on here) would then probably just star dumbfounded with their mouths open, like the other night when Billy Joel dared to play songs off his Nylon Curtain album besides Pressure or Allentown. And that was an album that was a fairly big seller.

JY also re-did the lyrics on his re-recording of Young Man on "Out On A Day Pass". The high vocals at the end sound IDENTICAL and I would swear it was the same recording other than a couple of the lyrics are different.

I would definitely like to see Styx pull out some WN tunes. And this is truly one of my favs. However, I don't know if JY can hit that high note too well anymore. That's a tough one to hit and he seems to have lost some of his high range.

Some songs that IMO would definitely fit with the current lineup:

Rock n' Roll Feeling
I'm gonna Make You Feel It
Best Thing
22 Years (I'd luv to see JY and Gowan tag team this one!)
You Need Love
“How did that sound?”

“Like Teddy Ruxbin hooked up to a car battery!”

I want to hear "You Need Love" live. That's one of my favorite songs. I don't know how it would sound if he sung it today.

I wonder if Styx would go that far back and add songs to their current concerts. Hmmmm If for some reason they would, I'd put money down that they would add "You Need Love".
