Styx and Foreigner?

Postby Angiekay » Wed Apr 12, 2006 11:09 pm

Are Styx and Foreigner mapping out a joint tour? No one will say for sure, but it looks like the groups might join forces for a number of dates this spring and summer. As of now, they've got three shows booked at the end of May on the East Coast. Talks have been held about doing more, but nothing's been confirmed as of yet.

Both bands are gearing up to go back on the road later this month. Styx rolls into Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on April 21st, while Foreigner hits Laughlin, Nevada, on April 27th.
The Styx/Foreigner itinerary (subject to change):
May 26 - Wantagh, New York - Jones Beach Theatre
May 27 - Darien Center, NY - Darien Lake Six Flags Performing Arts Center
May 28 - Holmdel, NJ - P.N.C. Bank Arts Center

This will be interesting if only to see what they do about the "who's opening/who's closing" issue.

Jones being the only remaining real member of Foreigner I guess Styx has the leverage.

Should be a good double header either way. Oh, and Foreigner good on ya for not announcing that the date for the new live album's been pushed back. As usual Andrew broke it here.

Why not there both washed up bands
Why not tour together.
They could call it the Double Vision tour.

Good Charlotte is mediocre at best. There is some pretty good modern rock. Right now I'm really into Thousand Foot Krutch and Cold. System of a Down is a bit more alternative but they still really rock out with a lot of progressive time changes and what not. Disturbed is another really good modern rock band that is more toward the metal end but reminds me of the energy Styx had in the early days.

Why does it mean they are washed up when a band does not have the original singer or guitarist etc in them...??

I seen Foreigner recently and they were fantastic.....better than they have been with Lou in years. Kelly Hansen has a great voice and is a fantastic frontman....Jeff Pilson and Jason Bonham is a great rythem section and Mick Jones still cuts the riffs and chops.......

Stick to your Neil Diamond, DDY crooning old man shite will ya Froy and dont comment on anything you dont know nothing about.......please tell me what Foreigner show you seen with Kelly Hansen ?

I have seen both Kelly Hansen and Lou Gramm (twice) front Foreigner and Lou was great the first time but awful the other time whereas Kelly was absolutely incredible............and better than Gramm.

Would you say DDY is washed up ? or is selling out 3000 seater venues still huge ?

I saw Foreigner sounds better
You saw a band using the Foreigner name and they were fanatastic was more like it.
Even Lou is washed up so it does not matter who is in the band.
Mick Jones is not Foreigner he just owns the name
We all know what Foreigner use to be like when Lou was healthy and there not that band anymore.

Stick to your Neil Diamond,

I certainly will the guy is a class act and won't ever be replaced.

Please tell me what Kelly Hansen show you have seen without Foreigner?
Tell me how many Steve Augeri shows you have seen without JRNY
And how many Gowan shows you have seen without STYX,
Fill in 's are not better than the originals CASE CLOSED>

I still do not believe that DDY will ever release a CD of new original material. When I say release I mean by a legitimate record company and not just selling them out of his basement or website. :D

The cover band terminology means anyone who is not the band doing their songs.....and that includes with an orchestra...

If you are saying Dennis is a cover band you are corect he is covering his Styx music
Only problem he is not billing himself as STYX .
I have no doubt Kelly can sing better than Lou at this stage of the game
But its simply not Foreigner so to say Foreigner was great is simply not true The Foreigner cover band was great
I would agree with that.

good points, though most older bands don't have all the members for one reason or another, i guess if all the 'key' members are there i would be more apt to not call it a cover band. clearly gramm was the important aspect in that band.

I'm hoping that Foreigner comes to my area, I would love to see them. I heard all good reviews of this line up and show.

Darren, now, now be nice about Dennis. He sold out 13 out of 13 shows in Canada. I think that's pretty good.

There Was A Time

Postby BlackWall » Thu Apr 13, 2006 4:13 pm

There was a time when I would have been thrilled with this concept, not now..

I can make an exception for Styx, since they do still have Shaw and the "legend", and I can go see a Dennis show when he makes it around to my part of the world, but I can't imagine seeing Foreigner without the guy who sang all of the songs.. I realize Mick Jones wrote a lot of the material, at least that's always been my understanding, but I just have no interest in seeing a covers act. It's ashame because I've always thought that Styx and Foreigner would be a great combination..

A lot of bands don't have all the original members or singers, look at Chicago, but they still have the original voice in Robert Lamm, or at least some original essential members(not that Mick isn't essential, but one guy who doesn't do any of the vocals?).

I don't think it counts if there are deaths of members of the band. I don't know.

This is just my opinion:

I think Styx is different than most of the bands mentioned. Dennis co-founded this band, he was one of the main songwriters and one of the main singers that people recognized with Styx. He was kicked out of the band. blah blah blah

Steve Perry could come back anytime, he chooses not to.

If deaths dont count then Dennis's ability to write a decent rock song died in 1981......so he does fall into that category....

I don't think a lot of the bands you mentioned are in the same boat as Foreigner. Most of these bands still have more than one key member, even if they don't have the original lead vocalist. My problem with Foreigner is that the guy who did all vocal duties(and quite well, too) is not present, and there's only one key member left(as far as I know).

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but when I go to a concert, I want to hear the person I've heard singing the songs on the albums for all the years. Is it really the same to go to a concert and hear someone else doing it? I mean, I could go to just about any club or bar and hear someone else do versions of my favorite songs.. why pay the cash for a concert? As I said before, I can make some exceptions: In the case of Styx, they still have two other key vocalists, and I can also go see Dennis, and I have. No, I don't like hearing Gowan do DeYoung songs, but it's a good time to go get a beer, or answer nature's call.

Chicago: As I stated before, they still have Lamm, one of the original voices, plus they still have the original horn section, and one of those guys, "Jimmy Pankow" wrote some of the most popular material, along with Robert Lamm. No, it's not the same to hear Bill Champlin(Look Away) sing songs that originally were done by Terry Kath, but he's all right(great on his own material), and that's only a few songs, where with Foreigner, it would be every song. They also have Jason Scheff(sp) singing Peter Cetera's old songs, but Cetera made the decision to go solo, and Jason has put a lot of years in now, and had a couple hits of his own with the band.

Queen: Quite frankly, in their case, Mercury's voice was an instrument in it's own right, and I have no interest, especially because the guy is dead, in hearing someone else try to sing songs that he made famous.

AC/DC: Yes, they did lose Bon, and I love most of the hits that Bon sang lead on, but look how many hits they had after he died.. It's a little different when the new vocalist takes over, and scores loads of hits, in contrast to taking over duties after the peak of the band. They also have other essential, original members.

In a perfect world no one would ever leave any bands and they would always get along and there would never be fall outs, health issues or deaths.
The Four Tops were probably the longest lasting with their original four guys. 41 years! Then one guy passed on and the lead singer got sick and was forced to retire. Now another member has passed on leaving only one original.
I'd love to see all groups with all originals in perfect health and always at the top of their game too!
But if it comes down to seeing the music continue on and not seeing at all, I'll take the music continuing on with great replacements.
I guess it's a personal or legal call as to whether the act should still be called by the original name or as a "tribute to". Usually if NO originals survive and no key members from the hit days are there, I'd rather it be called "tribute to" And the ones who just pull together(with members that had absolutely NO connection at all) to take advantage of legal questions of name ownership are outright IMPOSTERS in my opinion.
