Who sings it? And does anybody know the story behind the lyrics? They're very touching. All in all, a great song. Any info would be appreciated.

Dan Fogelberg wrote and sang it. From his website

Who did you write "Leader of the Band" for?

"Leader of the Band" was written for my father Lawrence Fogelberg who was a musician, educator, and band leader. I was so gratified that I was able to give him that song before he passed on. In his final years he was interviewed many times by the national press because of it. He went out in a blaze of glory, which meant a lot to me and my family.

It has always been a favorite of mine. Wishing Mr. Fogelberg well with his own battle with cancer.

Thanks much, Sadie. It sounded like it might be a son to father song, but I wasn't sure.

One of my very favorites by him! That and "Run for the Roses", which always makes me cry.

Dan was OK.... kinda like a cross between James Taylor and Barry Manilow. The song of his I most remember is Make Love Stay. Pretty good lyric on that tune. Don't forget "Same Old Lang Syne".

I remember Dennis Leary making a joke about Dan Fogelberg back in the 90's... something like...

If we can sue Ozzy Osborne for making kids commit suicide in the 70's, then can I blame Dan Fogelberg for turning me into a complete pussy?! Between him and James Taylor I didn't get laid until I was 26 years old!!!

I know lots of people who didn't have sex until their twenties. Care to make fun of them? ;-)

But yeah, that was funny...

I'm trying to be nice and "wacko" was the only word I could think of - LOL Just kidding.

As for driving, OMG I've seen my share of Illinois drivers. I never seen so many insane drivers in my life!! They have to be the worse. I was driving in CA and those drivers were way better.

You are all missing out on DF's best work, which isnt the stuff you hear on the radio..the mans got pipes that rival anyones, and he can rock out much more than youd expect if all you associate him with is the radio stuff.

Sadly, I probably missed my last chance to see him live when he came to town the same week me and the Mrs had already booked a trip to Vegas in 2003.

Saw him several times in the 80s. Wish I'd caught him recently as he looks to have retired from touring. Great artist! It wasn't just about ballads either. He could rock out too! Ahh, miss the versatilty of the old days!
