Leesa.. Darren's from England. I think it was a "tongue and cheek" joke that few get. Remember, They don't have Memorial Day like you do in the US. So with people talking about Vets, he just thought he'd thank the "other" Vets that do a lot to help our beloved pets.

Now just because we don't have a Memorial Day does not mean we don't respect or honor our troops. See, in the Commonwealth (Canada, Australia, England, etc) we honor our War Dead on November 11th, the day that WWI ended.

I don't think you put as much emphasis on Nov 11th in the US as compared to Memorial Day. That's just an observation, my own opinion.

In Canada, we honor those who passed on in WWI, WWII, Korea and our UN Peacekeepers, recently those who have gave all fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, on November 11th.

Lest We Forget

nobody replied because it was a stupid comment and not very funny - especially in a time of war. simple as that.

Memorial Day isn't specific to one war. Armestice (sp) day is more specific to World War II. Memorial Day is a day to remember the soldiers who have died while serving their country in or out of war. In a time of war, this holiday is more significant than others.

With as badly maligned as our military, commanders, and others fighting for us are in the media - it'd be nice if we, the "real" people so to speak could show some respect... and more importantly give some thanks. thats the least we could do.

Time of war ? do you mean THE BUSH/BLAIR OIL CRUSADE ?

Why dont the Brits and Americans invade Zimbabwe to stop the persecution or Israel to stop them taking land that does not belong to them.....why ? because in Zimbabwe because there is no oil and Israel because they are a foot in the middle east for America.......America never condones Israel when they take land......does Bush then think it would be OK to let Canada or Russia take some of Alaska ?

Can someone please differentiate between a terrorist and a freedom fighter..?

If a country invaded the USA or UK and the people uprised and fought them would we as Brits or Americans be terrorists or freedom fighters ?

If the people of China uprised against the state would this be an act of terrorism....?

I think freedom fighters are when you want them to win and terrorists are when you dont........terrorists become freedom fighters when they go against your country who you support........people called the IRA terrorists for wanting a united Ireland....I do not agree with the way these people go about it but to call someone a terrorist when they fight for there own country is wrong.........a terrorist is someone in my opinion causes death and destruction on someone else's soil....like those who commited 9/11 and the London bombs........just never understood the difference until you look deeper into it.........

You're talking about the politics.

I'm talking about the people on the ground. The soldiers have no say in when they go to war. They're commanded to do what they're told.

These are the same soldiers that fought by the Brits and Russinas to save Europe from the Nazis. Show some respect.

I guess you consider our soldiers terrorists, because it's clear you don't want them to win.

Why would Canada want Alaska? We allready have 3 cold weather Territories.. we don't need another!

Plus, we have all the oil we need in Alberta, on land that hasn't been told one year it's protected and the next it's exploited lol..

But yes, honor our troops regardless if they are British, American or Canadian.

Of course i do not want troops to die.....especially for an unjust cause like this............hunting Bin Laden and bringing him in should be priority number 1

Hence why no one responded. This post was offensive on so many levels.

If the War in Iraq was about the oil, then we just would have taken over the country and leveled it to the ground and claimed it for our own instead of trying to help build a democracy within their country. How quickly people forget about the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi's that have been found burried in the sand at the orders or hands of Sadam. Can't understand why some consider him a folk hero.

And while there are problems all over the world, one should question why the UN has decided to stick it's head in the sand with all the corruption there as it places countries that support terrorism and genocide on their decision making councils.

The rest of the world needs to take some responsibility and not just the US and Britain. Then we as a world could do more of the things you would like to see.

Actually, the more I think of this, the more I remember why I didn't post in this thread originally.

But if the British and American governments were the world heroes in eradicating injustice and suffering then when should we invade China ?

The one single country in the world with more human suffering than any other in the past 30 years....why did no invasion take place during the Tianaman Square uprising ? Thats when a country could of done with help....I know why no invasion took place as unlike Iraq China had a decent well equipped army.

I speak to many people who are sick of budget cuts in America so that spending on Iraq can go through the roof...... I pay taxes too and would like to see the money being spent on things here.....the amazing thing is that the money spent on Iraq could of given every American free health coverage for 15 years.

I support the troops 100% but not the BAFOON who sent them there.....my wife has a friend who's husband is a Captain and he just returned from Iraq last Tuesday and he said the troops do not know what they are dying for...this is needless ......wonder if Dubya would like to enlist his daughters so they can patrol the streets of Fallujah......thought not

I laughed when I first read this thread
on Memorial Day yet didn't quite know how
to respond so I didn't post.
But now it looks like a bit of a barney is coming on
here at STYX so I had to say hello and pass that
popcorn please.

I'm not interested in having a political debate, but I did find the post a little insensitive. Whether you celebrate Veteran's Day or not, it's nice to have respect for those who do - or at the very least, pretend to have respect for the men & women who have given of themselves so that we could be free to say the things we want.

My grandfather is a WWII vet, and thank god, is still with us. I can pretty much guarantee that if any of us were ever exposed to the kind of horror he was, we would just shut the hell up and say "thanks."

So make your jokes and your political statements on a useless forum like this, but just know that you are able to do so because people like my grandfather exist.

That's all.

Could not have said it better myself. Booyah to your grandfather Zan. My grandfather served in World War II as well but passed about 10 years ago. For most of his life he had only one lung because of having the other removed due to shrapnal wounds he sustained.

When I first read his post, "I didn't get it, which alot of Americans don't get the English humor without taking offense.
then I remembered the book Darren and I read together on British/American language and all the different ways we each use words...some are hysterical, we've had great laughs......I know what he meant now and Darren's not a cruel or hurtful person, at first it came across that way but he was just using a comparison again to the word "Vets".
anyway, hope everyone had a good weekend...

Because I knew who both of you were by your nicknames, but if asked what your real names were, I was stumped..

Sorry about that..

FTR, I *understood* why he said it (my husband is Irish). I just thought it wasn't the best time to make the joke. I didn't think he meant to be offensive, I spoke up because well, I was offended. LOL

Anyway, it's behind us now...NEXT CONTROVERSY!!! ;-)
