I thought that Styx was going to put out a new album this year. Here's a question/answer from "Dear Todd".

Hey Todd,

I am a HUGE fan. I seen Styx back in Ottawa ( july 28th 2005) and You guys rock. I think I seen the your tour bus but there was no one there. I will be at the Rock the park festival this summer ( july 22 2006) I cant wait!! My question is When is The next album coming out?? And also I heard rumors that the may 25th concert with the CYO is Being filmed for a Television Special and DVD, Is that true??
Thanks, Brandon

Hi Brandon,
I really don't know when we'll do another record. We have one song mostly done but in reality, we'll have to get off the road for a bit to write and record. I really have no answer for you. We are a few days away from the Cleveland CYO date as I write. It will be filmed for an HDnet special and will most likely be released as a DVD in December or so. The DVD should be longer that the TV special.
OK. Thanks and see you in July!

Todd

Zan, what songs are in the "modified" medley? Do you remember?

Dear Todd
I am so glad to say I heard your wonderful medley arrangement at Friday evening’s Styx/Reo show here in OkCity. Heard it first at the 2000 show here in OkCity.
I would be very interested in know if there is a place on the net that I could purchase a copy of this song medley?
For a long time Styx fan this medley is a real treat!

Hi Ken,
Glad you enjoyed the show. Thanks. I'm sure you can find some sort of bootleg of the medley somewhere on the internet. As far as a version for purchase (as it exists in the form you saw) that won't be possible due to publishing and other legal issues with a former band member. However, we are shooting a DVD/HDnet special next week with the Cleveland Youth Orchestra. I believe a modified version of the medley may make it on there that would not stir up any issues!
Thanks again for coming out to the show and take care,

Todd

Interpretation: If Dennis wrote it, they can't rerelease it. They can play it live, but not record it for an album.

Can't blame Dennis, but would like to hear a studio version of it.-ERIC

Audio CD is one thing ... they can release a live version if it is identical to the recorded version (no added words or changed notes).

Changing anythinng requires permission of the original author.

Placing video to the audio is considered a new work and also requires permission.

That is why you can have an audio CD of Styx doing Dennis' songs, but none of them on DVD. Also none of the symphonic songs that have Dennis writing or co-writing credit can be on CD or DVD because the original work did not have a symphonic arrangement - and thus constitutes a change.

This has nothing to do with the legal agreement between Styx and DDY, it's common Publishing Industry law. I worked in the publishing business (music) for a few years here in Nashville... it's very legal.

Ash is correct! You need special permission to alter or change a song on a recorded/released performance. That's why the American Idol kids are limited to the songs they sing (if anyone's noticed that at least once every season someone sings "I Have Nothing" by Whitney? LOL)

The Medley dropped Castle Walls and Roboto. I know Lights was added, but I'm not sure what else. I was preoccupied with the entire experience to pay really close attention! lol
