Hey everyone,
I don't know if all of you are into the whole Progressive Rock/Metal (LOOKING IN YOUR DIRECTION, ANGIE.lol) Like Rush, Dream Theater, etc. But If you do, Check out these bands.
Stride ( www.strideonline.com ) (Houston Tx)
and Zero Hour ( www.zerohourweb.com ) (Pleasanton Ca.)

There's another band outta Houston that is Hard rock/Alt Rock... It's Sound Breaking Ground ( www.soundbreakingground.com )
All VERY good bands. Lot of talent in all 3. I highly suggest them.
And if you have myspace, they're on there with a few songs each.
I DID try to post these in the Nu-Breed and Progressive forums, but there were only 2 views and they were me. lol
Besides, you're Styx fans. You KNOW GOOD MUSIC. :-)
Hope y'all enjoy.

Stride sounds good. The singer sounds like Geoff Tate to me.

Zero Hour sounds like Iron Maiden on speed. Not bad!

That's what I thought. Stride,to me, sounds like Dream Theater mixed with Rush, Queensryche, and Journey. (Ironically, Stride is ALSO ESCAPE, a Journey Tribute band out of Houston. They opened for Styx in Beaumont Tx in April '05. Go figure on the influence.lol. They REALLY did the Journey songs well.)
Zero Hour sounded like DT mixed with Maiden and Preist. (as you said..On speed.lol)

Geoff Tate sounds great on this new record - and he sounded great at the Ryman last November when I saw Queensryche there. I'll be seeing them again with some buds from college this November.

"The judgement man knows my fate
As I beg forgiveness with the plastic smile of a candidate
they take for granted that I'm out of my mind
and they're wasting their time to care.
So all my reasons are damned before they're heard
I'm a hostage by their words
What will lead us to tollerance
while they question our prejudice?"

Another band y'all might want to check out is Element.
( www.elementnews.com ) A local band from right here in Bryan/College Station Tx. This band is describes as "Open Range Rock".
Their myspace account keeps screwing up on them...but you can try the link to that also.
Enjoy.

I have the Stride Christmas cd they did - its very good. The version of What Child is This is excellent.

There are way too many bands in the prog rock scene that are good to possibly list them all, but here a few more stateside(mostly) ones that are lesser known as well

Tiles (www.tiles-music.com) - definitely a rush influence

Portal(www.portalband.com) - ok from Canada but are very good

Ice Age(www.ice-age.com) - mentioned here before as the singer sounds a little like DY but musically they are DT back in the earlier years

Reading Zero(www.readingzero.com) - not sure if they are still around but the music definitely has a rush feel

Transencence(www.transendence.net) - not sure of they are still around either but come across as a Fates Warning/DT stye band

Heard Ice Age...sounds VERY much like DDY. Very good band. I think my favorite from them is "One Look Away" or "Sleepwalker". Great Tunes.
I'm deffinatly going to check out those other bands that you mentioned. Thanks.
