New here need an update

Postby zino » Wed Jun 21, 2006 5:44 am

Just started posting here and STYX is one of my FAV bands. Did some lurking and seen that most people think Growen (SP?) time is up, I would have to agree he is pretty chessey and his spinning keyboard needs to go.

But what I need is an update as why the boycott, I need to know if I should join this boycott or not. Were words said from JY or Shaw, please inform me thanks

I like new people.

I think they're great and fun and bring new life and new blood to the forum.

But COME ONE!!! This is such an obvious attempt at trolling an existing flame series it's pathetic. If you're serious and want information, please don't start a new thread, post in one of the existing ones.

If you are in need of REAL help with the best way to get started on this forum, then I'll refer you here:

Thanks for the warm welcome, this is not an attempt to rehash an old topic, this is an attemot to get some information on aband that I throughly enjoy!!!!
Posting in an old topic would be wrong because I want to from my own opinion, so therofre I start my own thread! Then i don't have to read through all the other posts, to see the answers to my questions. This is alos a way to meet the real fans that would welcome new posters to the boards. So thanks for the link and I will read on and post my thoughts later.

Thanks for the worthless links, so Can I get some information on the state of Styx these days, I know they are touring, but not coming to my area, South Florida, saw them twice last year and they were great.

Any news would be helpful

Zino,

greetings from Central Florida. The closest the band is coming is to Atlanta in September.

They were at Hard Rock in March, you must have missed them.

I do hope they play again here soon.

Dennis is playing at Busch Gardens July 4th.

yeah - god forbid anyone actually address these things in earlier posts. it's ok tho - I mean heck... we enjoy rehashing conversations over and over and over again... really... we do. I can think of nothing I enjoy more than making life easier for someone who doesn't have the ambition to read a forum full of posts and information.... forget that. I'd much rather answer the same question and ignight the same flames with the same people again. This is fun. :)

Was hoping someone could possible point me in the right direction, which post should I start with, etc.

Didn't mean to get off on the wrong foot here, but, I ask a simple question and I get jumped for it ! Sorry for wanting to learn more about this band that I enjoy. Is this the way this forum operates? If someone ask a question you don't like you simply ingore them or send them to some stupid link. Hopefully it has made your day to give someone the run around on this. I really ennjoy the music of Styx and It is possibly one of the best shows I have seen in the past couple of years. Shaw puts on a great show as does JY. I was just hoping this band would continue along, possibly with a new keyboard player. Thats all I want to know and why would any fan want to boycott there favorite band. My favorite band is Journey and i don't need to get into there problems over here but if someone asked me about soemthing I would explain to them to the best of my ability and point them to the link or thread that started the whole thing. I'm not here to offend anyone or to start problems, just trying to get some info. If thats too much trouble well the I'm sorry.

Thanks for all your time

No harm no foul Ash ans suitemamdeblue

Im here to meet fans and friends

Zino,

If you read through the threads on this site you'll get a pretty good idea about the state of the band. Skip over the ones that have nothing to do about Styx, you can usually tell by the title or first post.

Here's a brief update for you, but you would do better by reading through the threads. I'll be corrected if I am too far off base. (Usually on a lline by line basis) Also, you should talk to Froy about our issues with spelling

Classic Styx (With Dennis) split during the making of BNW. During that album's tour, Chuck took a reduced roll due to his continuing battle with HIV. He continues to play at many of the shows, but only plays on 4 songs or so. He was replaced by Glen Burtnik. Dennis also was fighting a battle with a virus that made him sensitive to light (Epstein Barr Syndrome) and was replaced with Lawrence Gowan. - It is now known that Dennis was forced out of the band due to band dynamics and a falling out between him and the other members.

Larry's spinning keyboard is his gimmick. It happens because of his high use of technology that allows him to control his keyboard sounds through the use of midi. Technology no longer requires him to be locked behind a pile of keyboards like in the old days. It also makes it easier to move around the stage and be more interactive with the fans than having to be running behind a keyboard stack. It's easy to accept and easy to make fun of, but Tommy and JY clearly wanted a keyboard player that was more active than Dennis was in the past. Larry also takes criticism if for no other reason than he replaced Dennis. Also because, his voice is different than Dennis' and some have issues that he is ruining Dennis' songs.

Two years ago, Glen left Styx to be at home with his family and because he just didn't want to tour 150 days a year. Welcome former Baby's bassist Ricky Phillips, setting the current Styx lineup of JY, Tommy, Todd, Ricky & Larry with Chuck being at many of the shows.

To further complicate matters, Dennis is better and touring playing the Styx music he wrote. Glen has decided to return to do some touring and is playing with Dennis at select shows.

Both Styx and DDY/Glen are great shows. Styx plays the harder edge of Styx music and DDY/Glen are playing Dennis' and Glen's music. Together you could get a 4 hour concert with little duplication of songs.

Currently there are several camps of fans: Dennis is Styx - Tommy/JY/Chuck are Styx - & hey I'm tired of the politics, lets enjoy the music whil we can.

The Boycot Styx threads you are seeing is Froy's attempt to bring STyx to their knees by getting people that have not backed the current Styx lineup and feel that they are about to recreate the STYX universe by not going to their shows.

Quick synopsis, but there it is. Read the back posts, they are entertaining and informative...

In the interest of peace....I welcome you, Zino.

The advice offered to read some of the topics here is valid. I have never joined a forum, or at least posted, until I have read a little about what is going on and who seems to be posting what. I think it helps.

StyxfanNH has given a nice little summation of the Styx story, if you did not already know it.

That said, Ash, that link is absolutely hilarious!!! I am still laughing over it!

Yeah right froy like Chuck's going to side with the guy that tried to renegotiate their "contracts" so that only songwriters got any future royalties. Umm sure.

Billboards? You have pretty deep pockets huh froy?

One last thing..

I'm proud of Chuck for finally standing up and making a choice!

To Styx NH

Thanks for the story, that was great some I was aware of and some not, felt like the cliff notes of Behind the Music......GREAT JOB, pointed me where I need to be.
I have supported the current lineup of STYX 4 times in the past 3 years or so and enjoy the show very much, have been a Shaw fan since Damn Yankees, and new of Rickey Phillips because of Bad English. With that being said I would love to see DDY, last time in Ft lauderdale I couldnt make the show, I like to hear music like that in differnt forms, ( he does his show with an orchersta right), the last 2 times I saw Chuck perform and did some research on him and found an article about his illness. Its good to see that he can still play know and then. My wife is a Pharmist at and HIV clinic and she says that the drugs they have can really help a person with HIV if taken the correct way, I am sure he is doing this is if he is able to perform at shows. It will be good to see him perfrom for years too come, it could be an inspiration for those with HIV. Did his brother the drummer die ??? Thought I read that somewhere. I really became interested in STYX after we saw a show they did for the Florida Panthers season tickets holders last year during the strike season and they did a free show for over 2 hours it was great.

Thanks to all and I will read up

I will continue to support both sides of Styx as we can not control the differences between them

Welcome to the board Zino :)

I was in a rush before and posted quick (like usual)!! LOL

StyxfanNH did a great job with his post :)

I'll find some of the threads of interest for you. Just be warned that most of the threads go off topic

Just keep an open mind on all camps, just my opinion :)
