--The Ultimate acoustic band... Saturday night STYX performed with the 97 piece Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta at a sold out Chastain Park. The notoriously tame and distracted crowd was anything but that as the band launched into the first half of their 100 minute show, performing only as the 5-member band. After the song "Fooling Yourself", the band left the stage and Tommy Shaw played an acoustic guitar solo with the help of 6500 fans clapping in time. He then pointed up into the crowd to his mother and thanked her for all the times she had to put up with bands rehearsing in her house and having to buy him guitars and amplifiers when he was growing up. The spotlights found her and she stood with her arms raised. "I love you Mama! It was WORTH IT, wasn't it!!" He shouted and then dedicated the night to her. It was quite a heartfelt moment. He then introduced "'The Ultimate Acoustic Band', The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Darryl One (also from the Chicago area)..." From the overture, a mixture of music from "Fooling Yourself", "Pieces of Eight", "Show Me the Way", and "The Grand Illusion", A.S.O. set the incredible tone for the second half of the show. "Suite Madame Blue" was spellbinding. "It was a tremendous meeting point for the two musical entities and had to bee seen and heard to be believed," Explained James Young back stage after the show. The symphony continued with "Crystal Ball", the opening to "Miss America", "Babe", "Snowblind", "Boat on the River", "Show Me The Way", "Come Sail Away", "Best of Times" and others. Jimmy Johnson, Styx guitar tech said "It was the greatest musical experience of my life." This sentiment was echoed in variations throughout the hall and around the STYX camp the next day as they prepared to perform to 9,000 fans at Starwood Amphitheater in Nashville. It seems inevitable that STYX will repeat this experience somewhere down the road, perhaps filming the evening for broadcast. All agreed, if you missed this evening, you missed the Ultimate STYX Experience...

As much as I love Styx, I'm burned out on bands doing the symphony thing. It's a big chunk of why I was never excited about seeing any solo DDY stuff. Aerosmith, Metallica, KISS, The Scorps have all done the orchestra thing to death. Sometimes, I just want to see a 5 piece band with loud guitars for two hours. If I want to hear orchestral versions of rock songs, I'll pop in my Apacolyptica CD.

I was at the show in Nashville that is referenced in the article... It was hotter than hell that night. Styx was at the top of their game... very good show... good sound - the whole 9 yards. I was about 10 rows in front of Dennis' keyboard rack.

That was the last time I was able to see them with Dennis. That was an interesting night.

I'm pretty sure that Jodes has one or two that I don't have.

I'm working on getting more of the video. The interviews and old footage. I'm still pretty close to that Hawaii footage that I've been working on for 2 years now. I keep getting side tracked.

I still have that whole binder of old articles to send you! Is there any year that anyone's looking for?? I love reading about my favorite band back when they were in their Hey-Day! :D

lol...duh, me. That's what I get for reading notes when I should be getting sleep! Still, I don't think I would've thought too differently 10 years ago. There's just not enough interest for me with the orchestral collaborations.

Sorry to ThreadCrap everyone, but OH WELL don't read this then!

Froy, Okay since you can't email me back I guess I'll talk to you on here. So you sent a nasty email to her, did she call you or did you call her? I'm curious because you were so ticked at them. Are they going to do anything with your footage that you made? She's using mine from the tv show. Are you going up alone or is Bob going with you? The picture of Roger and I a few weeks ago turned out great, he gave me a big hug - HAH! Call me later!

There's a lot of Styx stuff out there, some of it more circulated than others. I have quite a bit of stuff as well. I've had that ATL show since about '98 myself.

I don't care as much to have everything live anymore, it's a matter of representative from a tour at this point if I can get it.
