I'm not sure what kind of commentary it is on JY's prolific writing that 7 of Deejay's 10 were CO written. Maybe the thread should have been top 10 songs sung by JY.?.

Great White Hope
I'm Gonna Make You Feel It
Lord of the Rings
Eddie (I'm probably the only one that likes this one)
Miss America
Midnight Ride
Winner Take All
These are the Times
Captain America
Heavy Water

I have to agree since certain songs were sung by JY but not written by him..That would leave out Lords Of The Ring, You Need Love, I'm Gonna Make You Feel It, and Winner Take All.

BTW, Eddie is a great choice.... 8)

Nope. I almost put it on there, but there were others I liked better. Eddie and Homewrecker are both enjoyable to me, so I'm in the minority too, Derri.

Glad you like 'em. You are in the minority. "Eddie" and "Homewrecker" are two of the worst songs Styx has committed to tape.

I'll play Devil's Advocate and post not only songs sung by JY but also songs CO-WRITTEN by JY (yet again in no particular order):

"Homewrecker"
"Eddie"(i'm also in the minority here with these two songs)
"Double Life"
"Lorelei"
"Heavy Metal Poisoning"
"Best Thing"
"Winner Take All"
"Half-Penny Two-Penny"

Is this your professional opinion? ;-)

Because everyone knows the two worst Styx songs committed to tape are "Carrie Ann" and "High Crimes."

JY hasn't written 10 good songs.

Eddie

Yeah, I'd have to struggle with 10 JY songs. They'd all be pretty much 1976 and earlier for the most part. Put Me On and Midnight Ride would move to the head of the class.

Eddie still blows, though. He redeems himself with Half-Penny, Two-Penny. The only worthwhile bit in Eddie is I like the guitar synth solo.

Let's face it, other than a few songs on Cornerstone, no one brought their A game on that one. The division in the band shows, not unlike BNW. Cornerstone is very much odd man out from 1977 - 1981.

Can't say I can come up with 10, but the ones I like are:

Miss America
Double Life
Great White Hope
Half-Penny, Two-Penny
Heavy Metal Poisoning
Heavy Water

Doh!

Somehow I knew that. I'm gonna blame a high stress work environment yesterday. I meant to say 'Hip Hip' and 'Great Expectations' were the two worst.

I still can't believe I flubbed that one. :?

I can see what you're saying to a point, but I think any time a band makes a transition from a heavier style (Art Rock) to a more melodic, acoustic style there is going to be some grinding of gears. Cornerstone may have had some cringe moments (Never Say Never), but overall it's a very solid album from an artistic standpoint. Paradise Theatre is somewhat a masterpiece I think of what Dennis was trying to achieve by taking Styx from Art Rock to Acoustic driven melodic rock back in the early 80s and late 70s and it was absolutely nailed in my opinion.

Eddie is a really good song tho. You may not care for JY's vocal performance - and we can argue that. But the song style and lyrical message are pretty good (even if political).

oooh. Great Expectations. Another runner-up for the boobie prize. LOL But to give it its props, a lot of people actually like that song for some reason, so I can't say it's THE worst. Same with Carrie Ann. Melodically, it's a decent song, and he sings it well, but the creep factor is way too high on this one for me.

So, I will start another thread for ten worst songs, and we can take it from there. lol

I don't like Eddie from a song structure standpoint, either. Very repetitive in a non-interesting way. JY sounds like JY on it, so I don't hate the vocal performance. I can take or leave JY's "scathing" lyrics which don't disguise it's about Ted Kennedy. It's just not a good song; like the use of the guitar synth - that's it. Cornerstone is NOT one of my favorite Styx albums, and Eddie is another one of its victims.

Here's my issue with the so-called acoustic driven melodic rock band statement. PT and KWH were not acoustic driven. Are "Sing For The Day", "Fooling Yourself", "She Cares", "Boat on the River", or "Crystal Ball" DDY songs? No. Tommy is the acoustic guy in the band. Always was when he joined. It's who he is, and he's at his best when he's more folksy. Look at "Yes I Can" (barf) on Cyclorama. Point being, all this talk about Styx being such a hard driven rock band that just went soft with "Babe" is laughable.

Well we're just gonna have to agree to disagree..... you IDIOT... (kidding :) ).

I do think that John Panozzo's best drumming is on that song - he sounds like Keith Moon in places.

JP definitely peaked in 78/79, so I agree there. The drum sound they got while recording the whole Po8 album is great.

You put way too much into the "creep" factor for Carrie Ann. So what if he dedicated it to his daughter. There are plenty of other songs out there dealing with sons/daughters that are like that. In fact, if you want to be perverted, there is a new Dixie Chicks song on their album that they wrote to their sons that you could take the same way. But personally, I think that unless you are looking for that kind of stuff (and I don't want to get psychologically into people's pasts), songs like Carrie Ann, they are legitimate songs to their children. To me, Carrie Ann is a legitimate song of a father speaking to a daughter. If you want to read something more sexual into it than that, then that is between you and your therapist.

Carrie Ann

Time stands still, baby when I touch you
I can't believe the way I'm feelin'
Please don't speak, it's taken me all this time
To find the strength just to say

That I never knew what love was til I met you
Never thought that I could act this way
But I'm still afraid to show how much I need you
Tell me, what makes a man like me this way

Carrie Ann, don't ask me why
Baby I work so hard just to hide my emotions
Carrie Ann, words can't explain
The way that I feel in my heart

Lovers' hearts never quite beat in time
They never find that perfect rhythm
You know I let you down many times
But this I promise to you
That I'll never lead you through doors of deception
I won't bind you to a chain of lies
Though I know my love for you won't be perfection
What I give to you will last all time

Carrie Ann, don't ask me why
Baby I work so hard just to hide my emotions
Carrie Ann, my words can't explain
The way that I feel in my heart

Take a little time to realize
I'll love you faithfully
Just take a little time and you'll see
That baby it's me

Carrie Ann, don't ask me why
Baby I work so hard just to hide my emotions
Carrie Ann, my words can't explain
The way that I feel in my heart
