Does co-wrote count? If it's JY alone, I guess...Miss America? Hell that's his only 'hit' period. But at least nowadays he is part of a 'progressive' rock band again. Now hes REALLY gonna get rolling with the rock.

Calling Miss America a mainstream hit is kind of like calling Hezballah a peaceful people. Miss America was a fringe hit...at best.

I didn't call it a mainstream hit. In fact the whole reason behind putting 'hit' in quotes was to diminish it's importance.

JY has never written a hit song and neither have you.......or I.....or Mickey Mouse.

We agree then, I have the same amount of writing talent as JY! :D

From a chart standpoint, JY has never had a hit really. This is why he needs Styx more than anyone else - his money comes from touring or points on back catalog. Lord knows the stuff from 99 on hasn't sold a ton so it's not like they had their "Aerosmith moment" :P

Did Cyclorama ever surpass 10,000 units?
What about BBT?

I have the number somewhere. I think Cyclorama did, but we're talking abysmal numbers from BNW on down.

Well...are we talking "hit" song or "good" song, because the two aren't always interchangable, regardless of the artist in question.

Has JY written a hit song? Closest would probably be "Miss America." I'd say that's his most widely appreciated one, and likely his best.

I'm not going to claim he's a prolific songwriter, but he has written a good song or two since then..."Half-Penny, Two Penny" is great, and I dig "Heavy Water."

He was replying to this the same way I replied to the DDY thread which I expected. The point of this thread was precisely the "who gives a shit" mentality. I don't care when the last time Dennis wrote a rocker was. Honestly. I really don't. He's written some really good songs since 1984 and some of them are rock tunes, and some of them are softer tunes.

I basically answered the previous thread by starting my own thread. Why do I always end up explaining this so much? :)

True, the best songs are not always the singles, but I think there's something to be said for having the talent to be able to craft a hit.

As a co-writer, J.Y. has "Lorelei#27(I don't have the liner notes with me, but isn't he actually credited before Dennis on that one?). I think that might actually be it, but I can't remember for sure.

J.Y. has a few songs I like, but he was never my big draw to the band; and from seeing him in recent interviews(reluctant legend??), my opinion is only further swayed in that direction.

On a positive note, had "Double Life" been issued right after "Mr. Roboto" or "Don't Let It End", I do think it could have been a hit.

It's ironic that a lot of songs were released as promotional but not as singles. This may have continued the popularity of the band, but is hard to say how strong songs were that were not technicly released as a single.

Throughout their career, Styx has never released their singles with any type of real plan. In the long run it has hurt them.

Part of the problem in the early /mid 80s was the industry trying to figure out how to retire 45s, market cassette singles, market cd singles on 3.5" cds and market cds opposed to LPs. The industry is as much to blame about their issues as anyone.

Who cares if it is a 'hit'? "These Are the Times" is not only one of the best JY songs, but one of the best Styx songs, ever.

So, instead of ignoring the 'shit' in the other thread, you posted your own 'shit' thread. Nice.

Monker,

That was a joke, hence the smiley at the end. I thought you were smart enough to figure that out. Same old stick in the mud as always.

Actually his last chart hit, as well as his highest chart position EVER as a writer, was "Love At First Sight" . . . ironic given his oft-stated disdain for ballads.

Thanks, Suite, for conjuring up a visual I didn't need this morning. ;-)
