1981 - The concept album masterpiece Paradise Theatre arrived with Top 10's "Too Much Time on My Hands" and "The Best of Times." "Too Much Time on My Hands" was also featured in the first hour of MTV's initial broadcast.

MORE LIES!!!! ACCORDING TO THIS "TOO MUCH TIME" WAS NOT EVEN IN MTV'S FIRST 24 HOURS OF BROADCAST. AND OF COURSE STYX WOULD NEVER ACKNOWLEDGE THE FACT THAT 2 DENNIS SONGS WERE PLAYED IN MTV'S FIRST DAY. BUT THEN AGAIN, THIS LINE-UP CONTINUES TO DISTORT THE FACTS TO MAKE THEMSELVES LOOK BETTER. That list really makes me long for days gone by in the music world..

What happened to music? I was on a trip with my girlfriend last week, and she tends to either listen to modern rock or top 40.. Anyway, this time around, it was top 40, and I just can't believe how much 99% of the stuff that's hot right now sucks. From what I remember, there's really only one song that seems to have any of it's own identity, "Black Horse and Cherry Tree", but it's played to death.. Basically, you either get the post day grunge rock, which features none of the soul or hooks that originally brought rock 'n' roll to life, but more often than not, it's the newest hip-hop song, that sounds just like the one that played before it.

I know I sound like I should be eating cream corn and trying to find Lawrence Welk on DVD, but I'm actually barely pushing 30.. I just think the music industry is at an all time low. I realize generation after generation have felt this way about their kids music, but.. isn't there a little less of a variety now?

I don't think it's a lack of variety in general so much as the ghettoization of pop music; catering to smaller and smaller niche markets and keeping different genres from mingling.

In other words, it's not the fact that on its first day Mtv was playing, say, Split Enz, Carly Simon and Iron Maiden that was so remarkable to me...but rather the fact that they played them in the same hour and gave them equal footing, instead of pushing them into the Headbanger's Ball/120 Minutes/Mtv Raps segregation that was yet to come, and which has only become more extreme with time.
