Today on the Glen Beck show - a nationally syndicated radio show out of NY, either Glen or his fill-in for this week has been ranting about bands not being who they are because they don't have their lead singer.
And he went on a 4 or 5 minute rant about how Styx was not Styx without Dennis DeYoung.
I'll be seeking to get the audio from this later today. My wife heard it while she was out running errands and brought it to my attention and I thought I'd bring it up.... since we've been talking about that for YEARS.

Difference is - this was on a radio show that gets about 8 million listeners a day on 400+ stations. Not some black hole forum of bathwater drinkers (of which I consider myself one)

The same could be said for any number of groups.

The same could be said for most groups.

Hey NH - I'm an "insider"... I've been a big fan of Beck's for a while. I just need to be at home to get it.
I think it was a guest host today tho. I know Glenn's been onvacation for a while.

The site says Beck is on vacation this week, so it was a guest. Now you'll just have to figure out what hour it was in.
It's always good to be an "insider"...

I have the audio... it's kinda funny. he talks more about Journey and Queen than Styx, but he has some funny things to say about Gowan that aren't really mean spirited.

The problem with Journey and Queen is that they were one lead singer bands. It's a more difficult arguement with Styx and 3 lead singers or at least 2 lead singers and an occasional 3rd.

Queen had three lead singers too...it's just that one of them got a lot more attention than the others (not undeservedly, but still.)

Styx had one lead singer. He sang 7 out of their 8 top 10 hits. Tommy Shaw was a occasional lead singer. Much like Rik Ocasek and Ben Orr of the Cars.

well I disagree there. To me Styx had more in common with Fleetwood Mac with multiple lead singers. Dennis and Tommy being the main ones in Styx and Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac.
Tommy had some very significant contributions to Styx and some very popular and great songs. JY had some ok contributions and an occasional good one.

It's been so long since I listened to Queen on a regular basis that I forgot. However, my son did just discover them so I am sure I will be hearing more of it around the house again.

Here we go... runs about 12 minutes... takes a few calls. Note: you will not hear song audio due to licensing restrictions on the feed I got - so he will refer to songs being played that you cannot hear. Legal reasons. Take it up with the RIAA.

He talks more about Journey and Queen (and to some extent Van Halen) than Styx... but still... the reference to Gowan (who it's obvious that he has no idea who Gowan is) is pretty funny.

Is the beck show the beck show with this guy at the helm? In his words, "if Beck couldn't be there, maybe they should have cancelled the show"

It is amazing how little regard he has for the members of the band.
The bands are so much more than the vocalists.
And he says its ok to go on with a different lead singer if he dies, but not if the band splits...huh.....either way its not the same people that made the song originally.

Thats not what he said - he didn't just say the Vocalist. He said the guy who wrote, played on, and sang the songs that put the band on the map. It's a little more intricate than what you laid out.
Also - the diff between this and Beck's show finding a fill in during vacation is that Glen's coming BACK on monday. If Gowan had been on stage until DDY was better than it would have been one thing. If this guy came back on monday and said "I'm taking over" they'd have to change the name of the show from Glenn Beck to something else... right? They couldn't keep the name of the show with another guy at the helm.

Is the band the band without the guy, the lead singer, that made them popular?
This is what he said not once, not twice but 3 times.
Journey is not Journey without Steve Perry. He left in 1995. I knew that
Styx is not Styx without Dennis DeYoung. He wrote the songs, he produced the songs by and large, he sang the songs, how is this Styx without Dennis DeYoung... (he then goes on to have a little fun with Larry but doesn't even know his name)
Queen is touring with that guy from Bad Company. It's not Queen without Freddie Mercury. (fails to mention that Queen toured as Queen with Paul Rogers)
Chicago is not Chicago without Peter Cetera even though he left in 1985. They have a couple of original members left, but its not the original members.
And you're right he didn't just say "The vocalist" he says LEAD SINGER.
It apparently is acapella night at the shows. Bands have issues over a 30 year career and for one reason or another members leave or are kicked out. It apparently happens to a lot of bands just look at his list.
You would think that if you know this happens with bands of this age, a little internet research might be of some importance.

Larry never said, "I'm taking over", he was hired
If Dennis ever returns, then everything will be ok
