FINALLY a DVD better than "Arch Allies". Too bad they couldn't strike up some agreement with DDY....it seems a little vacant without his songs. Erased from history.

It's an incomplete concert, but you get both new songs + the two Christmas ones. I'm surprised at that.

I guess since they financed it themselves and ultimately have to pay royalties, they figure they've given DDY enough money.

I'm getting it, but it looks like something I'll play once and sit on the shelf with the rest of the collection.

I think it'll sell OK, but not great. 5000 may be a bit low, but I would be shocked if it hit much above 30000 worldwide.

Froy, I didn’t know it was a secret show. It was well advertised on the Schaumburg fest website. He played about 2 hours. It was nice to hear Pieces of Eight and Castle Walls. Glen was there and did nothing but sing Edge of the Century. He was playing rhythm guitar on everything else but you could not hear his guitar at all. It seemed strange to see Glen come out before the show and set up his own stuff and tune his own guitar. Quit a change from what he was used to in Styx. The crowd was about 2 to 3 thousand people and when Dennis asked the crowd if they had ever seen him with or without Styx I would say that more then half said no. At one point he mentioned Chuck and Tommy by name when talking about the old days. The band was good but not on par with Styx. Dennis did not even play the keyboard on Suite Madam Blue or much of anything else for that matter. I will be seeing Styx on Friday so I will plan on posting an honest comparison next week. :D He played no new songs nor did he mention anything about a new CD.

To be fair.... they didn't intentionally leave off the DDY numbers. Any time you do this to music you need agreement of the songwriters to release it. As per publishing law, they can perform the modified versions, but they cannot release any recordings of them (and I don't honestly think any recording can legally be made of them).... so unless Dennis says "yes you can do it" they wouldn't be able to even if they wanted to.

Frankly - yet another live album or DVD or whatever - symphony or not - isn't going to bring them new listeners or new fans. And this is assuming that isn't a moot point anyway.

Since Dennis was a co-writer on Loreli, I'm kinda surprised that one was included. JY must have > 50% of the publishing on that song, or the law must be different for co-written songs.

I think I addressed this in my post above, but I'll clarify. Tommy and JY cannot release a video version of Come Sail Away even if they performed it note for note, word for word the way it was on the album because video is considered an interpretative work - and as such you need permission from the song writer to release it in it's modified form. It's why they could release CSA on a live "album" as long as the arrangement and lyrics were unaltered. This would be true of all Dennis' music with Styx.

I am really looking forward to this. I am also looking forward to the debut on HDNet. That should look really nice.

It's too bad they couldn't include Come Sail Away and the Grand Illusion. But I do like the variety in the setlist, and I am eager to hear (see) the new songs.

Did I mention that November 13th is my birthday?

How cool is that? Zan, and it's being released on my birthday.

Sounds like a pretty interesting set list. Some of these I don't think would lend themselves to an orchestra, but we'll see. As far as sales go, Dennis' orchestral set has demonstrated there is a market for this kind of thing, but whether there's a market for two of them, I guess we're about to find out.
As far as Dennis' songs go, it is my understanding that part of the settlement was that Gowan can no longer be filmed doing Dennis songs for release. Perhaps Dennis felt that thay had exploited those songs on enough live releases already? "Lorelei" would not be subject because it is co-credited.
I hope this is really good and does well.

Erased....from existence! [/Doc Brown]

Even in the Medley, it seems. Wonder how awkward that editing job is going to be...

Zan will correct me if I'm wrong because she was there, but I believe for this show Styx had reworked the medley as you see there - basicly they took out Dennis' songs. So the editing isn't going to be the issue, instead it would be the transitions as this is the only time they played the medley this way.

You are correct. The medley was reworked for the show. The Dennis songs were removed from it that night.

I know all about mechanical licensing being a musician myself ... sync'ing video to audio is a whole different shebang and does require permission. My guess is the audio CD version will have some of the DDY points.

My guess is that it's more than that, though. Nothing is ever cut and dry with this band.

Ok, that should be cool then. The way that EOTC was cut on Arch Allies still bugs me....this would have been infinitely scarier.
