That's the second "greatest" VH1 list a DDY-written Styx song has made. (Babe, #26 Greatest Love Songs).

Cool list. This looks like fun.

Thanks for posting Suite. :)

...and they completely mocked Roboto. Frankly, Dennis looked like an old fart totaly out of touch with his old audience. Funny that Tommy was the only person who didn't seem to want to make fun of the song. Loved the comment, "As a Styx fan, my reaction was, 'What the fuck is this?'"

I think that was the longest segment for any song that was mentioned in that hour. He didn't look like an old fart, IMO.

I remember that comment from my friends when Roboto came out! That's exactly how they all felt. Now they're kids love that song :)

All in the perspective. I thought most of the old rockers interviewed looked like old farts or burned out whatevers (including Tommy and JY as well as Mick Jones, the formerly hot Mike Reno, etc.). Dennis looked darn good, white hair and all.

I like his sense of humor about the song and I am sure he basks a bit in all the attention it has brought him. Well deserved IMO. He knows good and well it gets mocked, but it IS on the VH1 "Greatest" list. Not "Worst" list.

All in how one views it.

It's always fun to debate these lists. Just for fun, which songs do you still hear regularly in your lives (not counting playing them for yourself)? I put in parentheses where I seem to hear them at. I haven't heard a lot of these songs in years! What a shame, 'cause there's some great ones on the list!

01 Bon Jovi / "Livin' on a Prayer" 1986 (radio)
02 Def Leppard / "Pour Some Sugar On Me" 1987 (radio/jukebox at the local bar)
07 Guns N' Roses / Sweet Child O' Mine 1987 (radio/jukebox)
10 AC/DC / "You Shook Me All Night Long" 1980 (radio/sporting events)
11 Journey / Don't Stop Believin' 1981 (radio)
13 U2 / "With Or Without You" 1984 (radio)
24 A-Ha / "Take On Me" 1985 (not sure, but just seem to hear it)
26 Guns N' Roses / "Welcome to the Jungle" 1987 (radio/sporting events)
32 Night Ranger / "Sister Christian" 1983 (every ad for 80's compilation CDs)
34 Poison / "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" 1988 (kids at school)
41 Mötley Crüe / "Dr. Feelgood" 1989 (weight room at school)
59 John Mellencamp / "Jack & Diane" 1982 (radio/jukebox)
69 R.E.M / "It's The End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)" 1980 (odd places)
90 Tone-Loc / "Wild Thing" 1989 (dances)
94 The Rolling Stones / "Start Me Up" 1981 (kickoffs)

Oh, man, you guys are in your own little world.

He came off like a goofball. It was comical. When they showed him with his little piano singing Roboto, it was just too nutty. His short little surmising of the story came off like some kinda stand up comedy routine. The little concert snip with the Roboto mask DID seem like a comedy routine...it was all a "you can't be serious" two minutes of mocking Dennis and the song.

It was ALL done for people to laugh at. If you want to take it as somehow putting Dennis and Roboto in a good light, well, I don't think much of the rest of the world is going to agree with you.

I don't care if Tommy looked stoned. The sad thing is you people bitch when the band critiques these things and refuse to recognize it when one of the members compliments them. Hypocrits.

EVERYTHING from the 80's gets goofed on. All the retro shows (I love the 80s, I love the 90s etc...) exist merely to goof on how 'silly' everything and everybody was at the time. Dennis being on there was for goofing sakes, do ya think HE doesn't know that? Of course he does and he's perfectly willing to play along. That's why alot (not all) of people here find him endearing. Of course I could use generalities and say 'you people' dump on Tommy, when in fact only one in this thread did or I could say that 'no one' ever gives the 'other guys' credit for saying anything nice, even though there are many posters here that support the current line-up, but that would make me guilty of intellectual laziness. Or it could just help my stick in the mud point of view which is that I'm going to bitch about how nobody in this forum says anything positive all the while doing exactly the same thing. But that would make me a hypocrite. Or even worse it could make me Deano's bitch if I were over in the Journey forum, then I'd have to lurk over here more.

ek88. I hear most of this music anytime I tune into the retro-rock and/or soft rock stations on my radio, but I seldom listen to radio anymore.
Most of the videos for those songs are in regular rotation on VH1Classic, so I occasionally get to see/hear them that way.

I agree with a lot of the songs on this list, just not the placings. I sure wouldn't have put the Bon Jovi song first, but it is an eclectic list. However, I suppose it is quite representative to what was popular in the 90's.

I think the most fun in this series for me is seeing the artists as they are today and the updates on what they are doing. (One of the reasons I loved "Band Reunited"). It is interesting to see that many of them, despite careers outside of music, hop on the touring bus from time-to-time and play their songs in concerts. I believe many of them have discovered that there is money in them thar hills ..... and band shells, and festivals, and nostalgia rock tours.

And DerriD. I have long since given up trying to argue with someone who has no sense of humor.

Oh,really? I didn't see "I Can't Fight This Feeling", or "I Want to Know What Love Is", or "Separate Way" goofed on NEARLY as much as Roboto. Roboto was reduced to the "Whip It", or "Come ON Eilene", or "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" realm. That's sad.

Dennis being on there was for goofing sakes, do ya think HE doesn't know that? Of course he does and he's perfectly willing to play along.

I don't think he was goofing when he was talking aobut Roboto, or playing it. In the end, he may look back at it as, "well, that's TV..." and brush it off. But, he certainly didn't seem to be goofing about on purpose.

Of course I could use generalities and say 'you people' dump on Tommy, when in fact only one in this thread did

It's sad that this is what you want STyx remembered for, instead of : Come Sail Away, Lady, Best of Times, Fooling Yoursef, Renegade, even Babe isn't laughed at as much as Roboto is on this show. That is what some people remember Styx as - a once great rock back that made a mockery out of themselves in the 80's. THAT is the attitude this show presented. How popular that song is, how well it sold, is irrelevent. Any other press would be better for BOTH Styx and DDY.

Actually, I think if you have a song that has staying power...and I would argue that there are only 3 Styx songs that have had staying power and mass popularity 20 years after their release....(Robot, Babe, Come Sail Away) that at least you are remembered...for something....Without those three songs, Styx wouldn't ever be mentioned on anything..anywhere. Those are the facts.

I'm with ya on this one, bugs. I watched a couple of the episodes and found the updates to be the most engaging part of the show. I wouldn't mind seeing a show with a 100% "where are they now" format, not just a few tidbits thrown in!

One of the most interesting things to me is seeing the road a popular (or even one-hit wonder) band has taken from beginnings to the present. It is fascinating to see someone who was in a band that regularly sold out stadiums full of fans and who is now teaching school or working in a plastics factory or whatever.

I, too, would love to see more "where are they now" type shows. I realize "Bands Reunited" simply lost its mojo when bands got wise to what was going on when Aamer showed up at their door with a film crew.

Seeing some of the intercene wars that went on with a lot of popular groups makes me realize that what happened in Styx was par for the course and maybe a bit milder than most. (I don't THINK the guys ever threw punches, for example.)

Anyway, I have enjoyed this 80's series for all the updates.
