You forgot one!
Deyoung/Curulewski/Young/Panozzos
If you are going to include the "latest" you must include the 1st!

There was another one, albeit short lived:
DeYoung, Shaw, Young, Todd, Burtnik
...and why wouldn't anyone count the first one? They did put out 5 albums and layed the foundation. Why not ask Yogi what he thinks of Equinox?

You forgot this lineup:
DeYoung, Young, & the Panozzos: Music Time video in 1984, after Tommy buggered off.

Tommy WAS in the video. He was the goof in the coat waving the flag.

My sources tell me that Tommy had already pi$$ed off, and that shot of him was inserted by the video producers to make it seem like he was still in the band. And it also added the 'cute' factor...because without Tommy I think most of us would agree that Styx is not exactly the most attractive band on the planet.

Well, I guess I'm a litter younger than "old school", but the line-up that America fell in love with is DeYoung, Shaw, Young, and the Panozzo's. No other line-up ever sold anywhere near the number of albums.
I've seen Styx with the new lineup, and I saw DDY in his "Music of Styx" concert, and quite frankly, DDY is the voice of Styx. He sounded more like Styx by himself than the new Styx line-up sounds. He had too many songs and contributed way too much to the band than anyone ever game him credit.
As far as I'm concerned, Styx died in 1997 (no offense John P.), the last time 4 of the 5 played together. The current lineup should call themselves "Charon", the transporter of souls across the river Styx.

Er, read my interview with TS on this one. He tells the whole story.

De Young by that point had way too much control and turned off too many early Styx fans. I liked it at the time because it WAS STYX but looking back....ugh.
Favorite STYX lineup in a fantasy world would be De Young (1975-1978), Shaw, Young (1975-1981), Sucherman, C Panozzo. Tommy and Chuck are the only ones from the original lineup that haven't changed much. JY's guitar sound is lacking and his voice is shot. De Young just acts way too old. After watching the Soundstage DVD...oh boy. Like watching Lawrence Welk do STYX. Todd just adds so much energy and talent to this group. John was perfect for this group through 1983 but he became a rather basic drummer after 1983 though a lot of it probably having to do with his addiction.

I think your sentiment echoes many of us...if DeYoung had continued in the "Queen of Spades" vein, then Dennis would be THE voice of Styx.

Of course Paradise Theatre line-up is the best in my opinion because it´s my favourite Styx-album. But I still voted for current line-up just to piss off all you Gowan haters
Stop living in the past!

No, if DDY and the rest of the band had continued in the "Queen of Spades" vein, they would have vanished as quick as Kansas, and would have closed a very short chapter on the band. There would have been no #1 records, no number #1 albums, no grammy nominations, no People's Choice Awards, and only 2 top 10 singles...
Those of you that claim the band "ended" in 1978 after an album that was a virtual knockoff of Grand Illusion, do not understand the state of music at the time...it was evolve or die...Styx chose to evolve...Kansas chose to die.

As long as we're throwing out random AOR band names, Rush chose to evolve at that time too -- difference is, their music got better. IMO.
I think the point for those who prefer the pre-
Cornerstone Styx is that it doesn't matter how much longer the band lasted or how many accolades it received, since they no longer liked the music that was being made.

I never said they should have continued in the Queen of Spades vein. All bands need to evolve or they become stale. They could have evolved and still not gone the way of Cornerstone/Kilroy Was Here. If Dennis was being a leader as he states, he would have included a little more of the others opinions on which direction to evolve in. Sure they may not have had a #1 song but I am positive they still would have been very successful as a recording act and live act. Why do you compare Styx to Kansas? Kansas was way more prog during the mid to late '70's. Why not compare them to Rush as they never had a #1 hit but their music continued to evolve and they were selling out most of their shows.
