Froy, come on. DDY likes to get paid, too. He's not touring around "just because". And DDY is playing decent places, but in some areas, he's dong some of the same venues as Styx when they are not on a package tour.

While people certainly associate Styx with DDY, the average Styx fan could care less. We on these boards make up such an insignificant portion of the fan base. 10%would be a high estimate. We are the most vocal, but the general fan outnumbers us.

Has Dennis done 900 shows in 7 years ?
You come on
Dennis has toured on a once in awhile basis
Styx plays bowling alleys
All for that 5000 per member fee,

Froy, you know I like Dennis as well as Styx. It's not about the number of shows because DDY plays as much as he wants and I doubt Styx would tour as much as they do if they didn't want to. It's clear they value touring over recording. I'm calling BS on your statement because the first show DDY actually did solo was the free show at Rye Playland in New York - this was before the show @ the Rosemont (which I also saw). It drew a lot of people (prob. a few thousand), but it was a far cry from the sheds of 1996.

Now I'm not saying by incessant touring Styx hasn't whittled down the audience they can draw (and by association, the value of the Styx brand); I've been critical of that and everyone knows it. I'm just pointing out that DDY has done his fair share of free shows and smaller venues, but it hasn't hurt him in the same way it seems to have affected Styx.

This is crazy
They tour as much as they want to because of the money
Thats it very easy to see,
The setlist is 45 min with a medley how bad is that?
If you think these are real STYX concerts you are seeing than I feel sorry for you because you must not have been to a real STYX concert.. The ones I went to were 2hrs longs with all the STYX classics not a Tommy Shaw Blue Collar Man show.

You missed the point about the money
MONEY is the driving force not the fans or the quality of the music
They parade around using STYX so they can get paid
End of story

Quality of set list has nothing to do with this argument, Froy. Go back and read many of my posts. I haven't seen Styx in a year or two because I'm bored with the set - medley or not. I vote with my concert dollar. I'm flying to England to see Genesis, yet I didn't pay $50 to see Styx 30 minutes from where I live. I have always supported BOTH DDY and Styx, and have been equally as critical. I've seen Styx SINCE 1991, so I've seen nearly every incarnation of post-Kilroy Styx.

Are you so blind in your hatred of the current lineup of Styx that you can't see that Dennis is also doing it to make some money? Is DDY more "set up" than JY and maybe TS? I would arguably say yes considering most of the publishing royalties have gone DDY's way. We don't know what JY's or TS' finances look like, but I doubt they are bone poor. Money is the motivator for everyone. It's the music business. If DDY didn't care about money - even if he played 2x a year - why is he charging admission if he didn't care about money? Why does he do promotion and go on shows like Star Acadamie or that Sing With the Stars (forget the name) show? It's exposure which gives you access to a bigger audience which in turn can influence concert ticket sales and album sales. DDY has always been very shrewd, and he's capitalizing on his opportunities. He's not doing these appearances just for the hell of it. Your statment shows no understanding of how the business actually works.

This, I believe, at least PARTLY. Dennis was always more concerned with fame than fortune. Well, for awhile, anyway.

Just because TS was not in the 1991 lineup and then JP died, I have NO idea what the classic lineup sounds or looks like live. This coming from the guy who said 1996/1997 was magic - so was that NOT the classic lineup? (IMO 1996 was great, 1997 was boring.) You need to get your stories straight. There's plenty of boots and live video out there with the "classic" lineup pre-1984.

Froy, money is absolutely a part of it. While I would agree with you some of the motivation is to remind people of who he was in the Styx legacy, it's not his only motivation.

Dennis has always been very concerned with perception, with trying to facilitate the public perception that Styx is great and mighty and legendary and of the highest quality, and all of that. I really believe that's part of why he always wanted to limit the touring to major markets and not play secondary markets, because he wanted Styx to be perceived as a headline act that only played the biggest, best places. (Mind you, I said "part" of why, the other reason being he is not the happiest traveler under pressure). It's important for him that Styx be perceived that way, whereas I don't think he applies that to himself as a solo act as much. He is more realistic about his options as a solo act; he knows he isn't the same kind of draw that Styx was together.

Dennis is somewhat legendary for being a stickler for his business and he certainly knows how to negotiate to get what he wants out of a deal financially, but he is also a person who has always been able to see the long-term ramifications of a deal, and he has continually displayed a willingness to forego more money now to create more opportunity later. You know, when the band wanted to switch from Wooden Nickel after "Lady", several companies made bigger offers than A&M in terms of advances and royalty points, but Dennis wanted the band to go with A&M because he felt the company had the best long-term prosepcts for a band like Styx. He always insisted that they spend a lot more money on production for the live shows than they really had to. Compare a Styx show to a mid-Seventies show by someone like Blue Oyster Cult, it's like comparing a full-scale production of The Lion King to a school play. A lot of that was Dennis' insistence that Styx only present itself in a first-class fashion, even if it meant spending more and making less. Despite the band's huge success, there were other bands that kept more profit, because Styx spent so much back into the band, it charged less than standard prices for tickets, and so on.

Financially Dennis was able to do what he pleased because he never lived like he was making the kind of money he was making. At the height of the band's success, he was living in a very nice house, but certainly not a mansion (nor is his house today, it's a nice house in a gated community, not a mansion in the Hollywood Hills). When John Panozzo was driving a Ferrari, Dennis was driving a Honda Accord. He's lived relatively modestly, invested well, and owns a song publishing catalog that is worth six or seven figures per year without even leaving the house, so he is able to make choices about how and when to play live that are not solely about earning X amount of dollars from that show. When he first started taking the orchestra show on the road, some of the early dates lost money because they were so expensive. He persevered to where they became more successful. He could earn a higher level of profit by touring with rock band only and playing smaller gigs than those theater gigs, and in fact he does supplement his schedule with some of that type of venue. But I would submit that Dennis continues to play live, and continues to make the orchestral theater gigs his focus when he can, because he wants to remind people of how good the music is and he wants to present it in the setting that will show it off in the best possible light. It's part ego and partly the desire to continue to do something with his time.

I would say the difference between Tommy and JY versus Dennis is that they enjoy playing live and are not that concerned with the setting, whereas Dennis enjoys playing live when he can manage the setting to meet his expectations.
