I have ALWAYS stated that I felt Dennis Deyoung was the true superstar in Styx. Tommy was the star, JY was above average and the Panozzo brothers made up the rest of the team. When Tommy was in Damn Yankees Glen became the star with Dennis still the superstar of the group.

With that said, why is it that I can listen to a Tommy Shaw or Glen Burtnik CD from cover to cover and completely enjoy it. I can do this without having to pause or take a break. When it comes to Dennis I cant listen to song after song of just him. I dont think that I have ever been able to listen to his Ultimate Collection straight thru or his Symphony CD.

I like the majority of the music but I just cant listen to him non stop.

Does anyone else feel this way??

I don't feel this way but i do see what you are saying. I can listen to Tommy and Glen cover to cover BUT i can also listen to Dennis cover to cover. I can see where it's difficult, i guess it has to be the ballads non stop while Tommy and Glen can keep you rockin'. I love it all, the one person i have not experimented with is JY and his solo stuff. Im sure thats all interesting there.

Hey, Yogs. I, DDY fan that I am, am with you on this. But with a caveat. There is not a single album by any artist I can think of where I can listen to every single song an an album/CD without skipping or, in the old days, fast forwarding. Not one. And that includes my favorite Classic Styx and all of my favorite artists. There are always one, two, and usually more songs on a recording that I am sort of meh about, or actively dislike, and I usually don't listen. And that includes DDY.

So, I make compilation CD's, and then I get an entire CD worth of music that I love.

Thats not what I wrote froyster. Although I can listen to Welcome To Hollywood and Seven Deadly Zens from cover to cover. I am NOT comparing their individual albums. What I am saying is :

I can burn a CD of all Tommy Shaw songs ( Girls With Guns, Zens, Ambition, What If) and listen to it over and over on a drive. I can do the same with Glen ( Hollywood, Retrospectacle, Pallokaville) with Dennis I cant do it. After about 5 to 6 straight DDY songs no matter what song Ive got to put on something else. I dont know why Its' just the way it is.

As for What If.......................... Brutal CD minus Nature Of The Beast.

I have to admit, I have the uncanny ability to listen to almost anything all the way through. But then, I have the luxury of listening to my own music 8 to 10 hours a day, so I'm not worried about squandering my music-time (no pun intended). Out on a Day Pass is one of the worse cds I have ever owned-ERIC

Not a fan of Boys Will Be Boys (or First Time).

"Fire" (or Fahyuh) -- Whatever one make think of Dennis tackling Hendrix, is a vocal tour de force. His range on that song is astonishing.

"Please" is a powerhouse duet with a really great vocalist, Rosemary Butler. It took me awhile to start liking this one, but I love it now.

Back To The World....Call Me? Ugh...some of those are absolute garbarge. For the most part Desert Moon was good but there are a few I avoid...Fire? OMG..that is the weakest version of that song I have ever heard. As bad as Jim Nabors doing Hendrix. The only thing I can swallow from JY's albums is some stuff off his JYG album. I would put Girls With Guns as a whole on level with Desert Moon. Ambition is a good album...better than anything else DDY put out as a solo other than Desert Moon.

Im thinking of making a video for it

I can get through all of DDY's albums in a single shot. I don't listen to them often, but when I do, I don't need to flip around. That doesn't mean I think every song is the best or absolutely love songs like "Boys Will Be Boys", but I have an easier time digesting that over a good portion of Tommy's solo catalog. The only TS album I can get through end-to-end in one shot is Girls With Guns.

My theory on this (for what its worth)..

In general, Dennis has more great individual song moments. He is the guy that writes the legendary songs...but writes quite a few clunkers to get to those legendary songs...

Tommy in general writes decent songs for the most part, but is very difficult for him to get one in the "legendary" category. But he writes far fewer songs where you scratch your head and say "What was he thinking?"

To use a baseball (or cricket!) analogy....Dennis is the power hitter that hits home-runs, but also strikes out a lot...Tommy is a solid singles and doubles hitter who makes good contact with the ball, seldom strikes out, but also doesn't hit many home runs..

My theory on this (for what its worth)..

What if is when Tommy was drugged up, maybe could have been better-ERIC

I picked up 'Out on a Day Pass' new for like $8. It didn't even make a complete play through the entire album before I shelved it for good. If anyone would like to pay $40 for it, I'd gladly give it up. Looks like brand new, only been opened once and some songs have never even seen a reading laser!
