Thread No. 786 on this particular subject.
However. I appreciate the change of subject, and hopefully, tone, on this board, so I will respond.
Favorite Styx album: Equinox

My favorite isn't necessarily the best: Kilroy Was Here
GI, PO8, and Cyclorama are close seconds

Careful Zan, Saying Kilroy Is Here is your fav may cost you some respect down the line.
Seriously, how can you or could you listen to Cold War, Dont Let It End, and High Time back to back to back??
Aweful Aweful songs!!!

And yet, I don't think I've ever posted in one, at least not on this board. Weird.
It's
Pieces Of Eight all the way for me.

I have a soft spot for KWH too, even though I don't think it's a very good album. Nostalgia is a funny thing.

"Cold War" is blah on the record, but was good live. "Don't Let It End" is fluffy but harmless. I agree about "High Time."

Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight tie for tops. Equinox, Crystal Ball, Paradise Theater, Return To Paradise and Cyclorama are next.

I have always liked Cold War and High Time (even though HT is high on the cheese factor). I agree with you on DLIE, not one of my favorites, but at the time it was released, I did. The whole album holds a special place for me, as it was my very first Styx album and "started this whole train rollin'."
BTW, "aweful" means "filled with awe."

i always thought side two of pieces of eight was very rocking.side two should've been side one because the first side didn't have many hits.

Side 2 is stronger in general, but I can't see "Lords Of The Ring" closing the album, and "Great White Hope" was clearly designed to open it.
I miss album sides...

Zan,
You really like Cold War??
I truly think it is their worst song EVER. That includes Wooden Nickle.
Taste is a weird thing!

Forgot to say that Equinox was my first Styx album.

Yogi,
You really don't like Cold War??
I think it is a pretty good tune.
I will admit, the music & beat aren't much to write home about, but I like the lyrics (unlike High Time, where I really like the music but cringe at the lyrics), and I like the way he sings it, especially those little Tommy screams, yum.
Equinox is not one of my favorite albums either, even though it's not a least favorite. I guess we really do have different tastes and we're not just making it up to be argumentative. lol

As much as I dislike (HATE) High Time the song truly fit the Kilroy concept.
Did Cold War?
I know Dont Let It End didnt.
To me Cold War sounds like a REALLY REALLY bad attempt to woooo people who like The Safty Dance over to the Styx camp.
Is it true that after Tommy left Styx he was considering fronting Men Without Hats?????
As for Equinox............... TRULY a MASTERPIECE in my book!!!!!

Lyrically, I think the two songs are pretty much saying the same thing -- Hey, these MMM types suck, let's fight back! -- but I vastly prefer the "Cold War" take on it.
The music on the other hand....meh. Nice guitar solo, though.

As soon as I saw this topic, I knew for fact that it couldn't just be answered. I knew at least one person would comment on how many times this has been asked.
THE GRAND ILLUSION. Hands down period best record EVER made.
Thanks for asking. This question still needs to be brought up now and then.

Looks like longer ago than I thought on this particular topic. Didn't mean to rain on the parade here. And you are right, it is nice to talk about the positive stuff, like favorite songs, albums, etc. I know many threads have been devoted to this subject over the years I have been a member here, but sure doesn't hurt to have it brought up from time to time by those who are recent additions to the board.
I find on every single Classic Styx album there are one or two songs I skip.
I never skip anything on Equinox. It is the one I come back to over and over and play over and over.
Yogi and I do virtual high fives over this one all the time.

You know what, I also like "Cold War" and "High Time". Sure, they're a bit on the camp side, but the whole thing was. They fit the needs of the record. I actually liked the fact that the band was trying something really new. Of course as a 37 year old man I see the weaknesses that were there all along, but I can vividly recall buying that record as a 13 year old kid and thinking it was an absolute masterwork. I still think that some of the thematic elements of that went right over a lot of people's heads, including some of the band members themselves.
"Don't Let It End" does not fit the concept, but I think it's a great radio song. "Heavy Metal Poisoning" for me is weak musically, but with an interesting lyric. But I like everything else on the record, especially "Just Get Through This Night" and "Haven't We Been Here Before". And whatever else gets said about KWH, I have to say it's an extraordinarily well-produced record from an engineering standpoint.

KWH was my gateway to Styx fandom as well. It was my first exposure to the rock-opera-concept-album thing, and I thought it was cool that a band would be trying something like that. KWH led me to CITA, which led me back to the A&M albums represented there, which led to the discovery that I liked the 70's Styx better than the 80's Styx.
So, yeah...even though today I don't rank KWH very highly as a Styx album -- and even lower as a concept album -- I still have a soft spot for it.
RockWriter wrote: "Don't Let It End" does not fit the concept, but I think it's a great radio song.
And it does provide the hook that ties the end together thematically. Whether it was planned that way, I have no idea.

Some of the songs feel to me as if they began life sounding quite different and then got shoehorned into the KWH aesthetic, but otherwise I agree. "Roboto" in particular is a wonder of production, taking the Gary Numan/Yazoo/Human League thing to new levels. "Just Get Through This Night" is very impressive too.

interesting thread- for me, Kilroy signified my departure with the band until the 90s. I heard robotto on the radio, hated it, and never bought this album (until at least a decade or so later when i finally got the cd.) so as far as styx goes, KWH is the "classic styx" album i'm least familiar with. The first styx album i bought was GI, and then PT. (it was 1980 or so...) then i got PO8, Cornerstone, Equinox & CB, and of course, the 4 wooden nickel releases.

I got my KWH LP autographed by all the (glory) band members over time, which for me was exceptionally cool. When JY signed mine, he questioned why I chose that album to get autographed. When i told him it was my favorite Styx record, his response was priceless: Are you serious???
ROFL.

kilroy was here was a gift i got on my eighth birthday.still remember the date i got the cassette march 8,1983.i have a polaroid of me holding it,def leppard pyromania and journey frontiers.my mother asked me what i had wanted and i told her.i wasn't like normal eight year olds playing with G.I. joes.i've been rocking out for over a quarter of a century.strange how all of these blockbusters were released real early in the year of '83.lot of good music came out that year.....
