I for one think that at 50, 60+ years old, all these guys are doing just fine. I've never been too fond of "live recordings," for this exact reason.

No worse than those who think Tommy & JY walk on water honestly. Thats why there are two camps. JY's voice sounds like hammered ass and it's been like that most of his life - so there's you're reason there. I think Tommy's and Dennis' have held up really well considering their contemporaries.

Consider Steve Walsh from Kansas - his voice is NOTHING like what it was in the 70's and 80s. We should consider ourselves fortunate that these guys take relatively good care of themselves as they get older.

Besides, I'll take DDY on a bad day singing Come Sail Away than Lawrence Gowan ANYDAY singing any song.

Incidentaly - thats a great picture of Dennis on that page. I like the suit he's wearing. Very classy - not pretentious. Not trying to be something he's not. He looks good.

Tssk tssk. I wasn't saying that. When you post only negative things, or are constantly seeing the glass half empty...I see a trend. In this example, there were four songs, yet the only response is a negative one. Now I may be guilty of calling JY a doofus from time to time, but when he has done something even remotely decent, I've pointed that out too.

Agree 100%!

I would agree that for the most part, both Tommy's and Dennis' voices have held up really well. Tommy isn't reaching for all those highs as much, and DDY still does. Very rarely have I heard him miss a note (I heard him chunk either "Desert Moon" or "Don't Let It End" once). A good example of TS' dropoff is "Too Much TIme On My Hands". He doesn't reach for some of those notes anymore, and some of the times I've heard him do it (tape or live) he almost speaks some of the parts. Also keep in mind both TS and DDY are still singing the songs in the original keys. Even Geddy is dropping a few songs down now a whole step to be able to sing them better. Not many, but a few.

JY never had the strongest voice, and now he's doing something weird to still sing that high. It doesn't sound quite right. But again, it's not so bad that I wouldn't want to hear "Midnight RIde" live (I'll take that over a song like "Captain America" or "You Don't Make Peace" any day of the week).

Come to think of it, outside of Jon Anderson of Yes who is a freak of nature, out of most rock singers of their era, both DDY and TS are some of the better singers who:
a) Are still working (even if it's not together)
b) Have most of their voice intact (and given what TS used to do with pot and smoking, that's no mean feat)
c) Sing in the original key

Look at guys like Lou Gramm who arguably doesn't have the same golden voice anymore, or even Phil Collins who over the past 10 years has seen a real drop in range.

Music is a very personal taste. Rain, This Time Next Year, and Turn off CNN are the ones I like best. Crossing the Rubicon, Repect Me, Forgiveness and I don't Believe in Anything (love the guitar in contemporary lyrics) are ones I also like. Save Me, Breathe Again and I Believe in You are my least favs. That said, Save Me sounds much better on the live video.

So I just listened to the "Come Sail Away" - what was really horrible was the crowd singing "carry on". Jeez! Could they be any more out of tune! LOL

All kidding aside, DDY's voice on CSA has pretty much sounded the same to me since at the EOTC tour. On this version of CSA, he didn't really chunk anything, but you could hear him struggle a little on the "we headed for the skies" going into the last chorus. Sure, he could hit that no problem back in the day, but the note was right. Everything else was fine, and remember, it's live. In the studio he'd most likely touch it up and I would argue back in the day he wouldn't even let this live version get released because of that one note. If you've heard the unreleased Styx live album from '77/'78 which cropped up on a bootleg from Japan a few years ago, there's really nothing wrong with it. Styx is being overprotective, but that's a whole other thing.

I did hear some keyboard flubs but it isn't DDY playing the main keys sans the solo. You can argue "it's not Styx", but DDY's version of this song is way more Styx than Styx is doing these days mainly because of Larry's horrid singing on that tune. Sure, you miss the doubled and harmonized guitar coming out of the solo, but when Glen's around, it's there

I like Larry, but he should stay away from any DDY song and stick to his songs which actually sound good (and still remain some of the only ones I like on Cyclorama or Big Bang Theory). I've said this since 1999, and my tune isn't changing. He brings some good stuff to the table except when attempting to sing a Dennis song.

I suppose that if someone was a fan of the original Grand Illusion arrangement as opposed to Dennis' newer version, you may like Gowan's take on that song.

Another thing to realize about Gowan is that he has also been around a long time so his voice has had some deterioration too. I think this is evident when listening to the original Criminal Mind from the 80s and the newer recordings of it.

blt, with all due respect, you don't know what you're talking about here. Other than having two guitar players all the time, Styx and DDY do the same arrangement of the classic Styx songs they both do ("Grand Illusion", "Come Sail Away", "Lady"). CSA is pretty much the same way Styx and DDY have been playing it since 1977 as well. So I have no idea where you're getting the idea they are different arrangements. Different players, same song, same arrangement. DDY does cut the CSA solo short to keep it the same as when he plays it with an orchestra.

It has nothing to do with being a fan of any particular arrangement. Lawrence just can't sing DDY's songs and I've had 8 years and have seen Styx multiple times to formulate that opinion. His voice is thinner than DDY's and doesn't have the body, and it gets shrill when he tries to hit some of those high notes. He's just fine on the songs he did specifically for Styx or when they've done "A Criminal Mind". I would much rather prefer to see Tommy singing some of them than Larry.

My guess is he's talking about the album arrangement of TGI with the opening vocal lines coming one right after another, instead of drawn out and alternated with the harmonized guitars. The former is the way Styx has been playing it since LG joined.
