I love both. I prefer Dennis in Styx, but Gowan does a great job. Overall I prefer Gowan as a solo artist - I swear by his solo albums - just magic.

Ok? Try great. I think that he's an asset to Styx. With his multiple awards and award nominations from Canada, he's a plus to the band. He brings a different energy to the stage, and it's an energy that Styx needs.

Yep, chipmunks have lots of energy. If I want to see energy, I will go to the woods. If I want to hear how Styx should sound, I will go see DDY.

He can't be all that much of an asset if he's constantly referred to as "the keyboard player in Styx".

Personally, I think Styx without Dennis is not Styx. With that being said, I also think Larry is the best part of the show lately. I'm not trying to say that he is a good replacement for Dennis, but in my mind, he is a great entertainer. I mean let's face it, how many concerts over the past 11 years have been EXACTLY the same, the same introductions before each song, the same choreography, the same set list. I think Larry is a welcome change. But in my opinion, he is no replacement for Dennis.

Also, since John's passing, I think their overall sound has changed. Todd is one of the best drummers I've ever seen, but John's good ol' Stiff armed beats were a BIG part of their sound. I just had to sneak that in. a lightbulb for your entertainment.

Weird, that "almost" sounds like what Jy said. Here is what Jy said in 1999.

Gowan is ok with his own music, but I don't think his vocals are a match with the other two in Styx. He also can't sing Dennis's songs worth a flip either and that are most of the songs people want to hear, like "Grand Illusion", "Rockin the Paradise", "lady", "Come Sail Away", and "Suite Madam Blue".

I don't think we actually know what Larry could actually contribute to the band musically. We only have a few songs of his that have been able to make their way to an album. (The same can be said true of Glen.... Even though much of Edge was Glen's material and not STYX material)

He can play keys and he is an excellent entertainer. He has his role in the way the band is constituted now and fits in perfectly with the way the band portrays itself now. As a straight ahead, high energy rock and roll band.

I don't think musically or definitevely we can say that Larry is better than Dennis or vice versa. They had different roles in the band. And bring/brought different things to the table.

And just because you have a degree in Music, doesn't mean you are a better muician. It just means you have a degree.

I wish I knew why. And I wish I knew why he can fill all the seats of one of the major concert halls in Montreal at $75.00 a ticket and only plays state fairs in the US.

The only thing I can figure is that there are so many talented musicians in the US that the American music audience is spoiled with the abundance, maybe?

As for DDY, I can only speak personally, in that I like his writing, his music, and the class that he brings to a concert. Why the Quebec audience likes him so much I can't say because I'm not a native Quebecer.

Just to balance out this post, I've been a Styx fan since I was 14 living in the backwoods of Nova Scotia. I'll be seeing them live next week.

But I've been to 7 DDY concerts and I'm going again next month.

Other than in Quebec, I don't think anyone knows which of Dennis or Styx is more popular in the "rest of Canada".

With respect to Quebec, Styx music was and has been very popular there. The songs Quebecers have tended to like (like Suite Madame Blue) were written by Dennis. Dennis has capitalized on the music's popularity by apearing on their version of Idol (reminding Quebecers of his music) and playing in some cities that most anglophone artists don't play. I presume that this has given him a tremedous amount of goodwill amongst music fans in the province. Dennis' label in Canada is an independant Quebec based label that distributes through Universal Music. They know the Quebec market really well and have done an amazing job supporting Dennis new CD.

The writing is on the wall for Gowan. Going from four consecutive multi-platinum albums to getting a 35-minute set opening for the likes of Def Leppard is a HUGE fall. Tommy and JY can talk about this being the best Styx lineup ever, but it's just whistling past the graveyard. Styx couldn't even headline in my backyard, at this point.

All Tommy and JY have to do is look at what Journey did, who hired a Steve Perry clone. We all know Gowan can't sing DDY's songs worth a crap. Falcon, explain to me how you get a 35 minute set when the same set that was mentioned in another thread (which is the time you are using) is 50/55 minutes in length in every other venue they are playing in. And when Foreigner is not playing and they are the only other act, they are playing 75 minutes? On top of that, many of the shows they are playing are 90 minutes in length when they are the headliner.

It is a little known fact but Styx recently played a 2 hour 10 minute set in L.A. They played EVERYTHING with the exception of Renegade & Come Sail Away. Will explain this oversight later.

My brother was there and he said it SMOKED!! 'Best concert he EVER saw' were his EXACT words. This is coming from someone who isnt the biggest Styx fan and could give a rats ass about the Deyoung/Gowan fan fights.

Before the First Encore( Too Much Time & Miss America) Jack came out and introduced his new Steak & Chedder Sandwich. Jack then left the building(so everyone thought). When the confetti came down from the rafters it was free sandwichs for all coupons. The crowd went BALLASTIC!!!!!!

Jack sure knows how to do promos. My brother told me that this particular Jack In The Box could hold at least 200 people and the place was 3/4 full. The sound was excellent espically in the play area.

A few sour notes did occur: Styx would have even played longer( Second Encore) but a birthday party arrived. JY and Jack then got into a HEATED argument because WAAAYYYY more people wanted Jacks autograph. Jack was not suppose to show up again until the band had completely left the venue. This was in the contract according to the Styx people. Tommy & Gowan were also pissed because they didnt get to play their two biggest hits. Finally, Todd & Ricky were both upset because they put tooo many onions on their Steak & Chedder sandwiches.

Still it was a GREAT show. The boys got to extend their set quite a bit(something Todd REALLY wants). Jack In The Box has a HUGE fan base. And Styx is realizing that they can get past DDY, Foreigner, Glen & Def Leppard. Who needs any of em???

Screw it all. Dennis better never go back to Styx. He can perform and hang with Tommy and Glen all he wants - but if he ever shares a stage with JY again, I'll likely lose respect for him.

The show is more energetic with Gowan out there..that there is no denying. Dennis acts like a goofy boomer on stage who can barely keep his obvious rug on. He is happy with where he is and so are the other guys. Why can't you be happy?
