John Panozzo is extremely underrated in the Styx sound.

Yesterday I was listening to the classic stuff and it really struck me just how good of a drummer John Panozzo really was. He had great stye... not overly flashy but memorable. His style just oozes personality which is what I love in drummers.

On top of that, they way they recorded his drums was a bit different I think... since if you listen on a good set of cans you can really hear how he's all over the place in the stereo mix and almost sounds double up at times.

Now here's a topic I can get into! I loved John! In fact, I was air-drumming to most of his parts on every Styx song before I was singing the lyrics. I think he definitely played a big part in Styx's signature sound, and he will always be sorely missed by me (even though I can't imagine Styx without Todd - one of those ironies of life).

I was lucky to meet John once upon a time, and he was exceptionally friendly and accommodating - smiles all around and very patient with every fan who approached him. Nice guy. Check out the 'do - not one of my better hair days. Although, it was the early 90s. LOL (but don't I look happy?)

Sterling's book talks about this but John had to work really hard to become a good drummer. He did do some interesting things prior to Cornerstone. He was a basic yet unique drummer. Later, he became a shell of what he once was because he was sick.

Always loved JP's playing. And the faces he made while doing it. Tres cool.

OMG, if I didn't know better, I would say this was a picture of my old university roommate - you two look almost identical! That hairstyle was POPULAR back then!!!!

And yeah, you look pretty darned happy. Can't blame you one bit.

Yes, it was popular, as was the "perm." Even JY had one. Yikes. lol
