Am Curious To Know

I am wondering and I'm sure this has been a topic before, but I would like to know what bands, artists any of you still listen to or go see that came out during the 90's or later. I am trying to get a feel if anyone else developed some of the same musical tastes later in life, past the teen's and 20's.

Here are some of the bands I still listen to or go see live that came out around during or after the grunge era...

Alice In Chains-Always loved the harmonies with Staley and Cantrel
Soundgarden-dead band but music kicks
Audioslave-same as above
Tool-Great live show, great drummer, interesting music...vocals not a factor

Others still listening to...Queensryche, Megadeth

I find it strange that I would develop a taste for these bands since coming from the 70's era of rock.....myself and a few friends are always outsiders at these shows, everyone else teens and twenties.

This probably explains my taste between DDY and the current Styx.

90's is my musical gap pretty much. I listen to more current bands blended in with the groups of the 70s and 80's.

No Doubt
Alexa Ray Joel
Rob Thomas
Peter Cincotti
Maroon 5
Semi Sonic
Pink
Bond

I barely listen to any classic rock anymore, I'm just burned out on it. Styx is one of the only bands I still listen to, and even that's limited to mostly recent stuff (1991 and later). Although, I do listen to Beatles, Aerosmith, Simon & Garfunkel, Don McLean, AC/DC and Pink Floyd (I know, wtf?).

Bands I liked in the 90s I used to like and still listen to:

LIVE (awesome, awesome band)
Matchbox 20
Dave Matthews band
Brain Setzer Orchestra (positively smokes)
Eva Cassidy
(again, the contrast is pretty big)

I also still enjoy "80s music" quite a bit

Bands I used to listen to a lot, but never listen to anymore (nothing against them, just don't feel the urge) are:

Iron Maiden
Metallica
SOD

I also attribute a lot of my musical tastes with the fact that I have to listen to different styles because of the band I'm in. Never in a million years would I have believed anyone if they'd told me years ago that I would have artists like Justin Timberlake, Shania Twain, and Shakira on my iPod, but alas, now that we perform that stuff, I find a lot of it has grown on me (as per what I said in an earlier thread about acquiring taste for some music). Ah well, at least I have a broader spectrum of music to enjoy now. I guess. lol

I think Pink has a fantastic singing voice. Just wanted to say that. I wish I could get that range and rasp, myself!

Wow...I thought I had a wide variety of tastes... Others on my iPod and please keep the laughter down...John Denver, Elton John, Enya (those times I really want to mellow it out), Bee Gees, Rob Coslow (pianist and more mellow time), Eric Johnson, Muse, Evanescence, Rush, Heart, A Perfect Circle, ABBA, Chicago, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, Gary Wright, The Human League, Jars of Clay, Kansas, Live, Marty Friedman, The Motels, Metallica, Mr. Mister, Nickelback, Pat Benatar, Paul McCartney, Sweet, Robert Palmer, David Bowie, Simple Minds, Spinal Tap, Journey, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Toto, System of a Down, King's X, Van Halen, Wolfmother, ZZ Top, Yes, The Verve Pipe, Coldplay, U2.....something for every mood.

Grotelul, you are on a roll-lul!! Another good topic to discuss.

Current music/singers I like would include:

Green Day
Sarah McLachlan
Franz Ferdinand (a few of their songs)
Snow Patrol
Train
Taylor Hicks (Fell in love with him on Idol, bought his really, REALLY good original, acoustic album "Under the Radar". His post-Idol album was less satisfying, but the guy is wonderful in concert. Very charismatic and a hell of an entertainer.)

Those are a few faves. I dabble in a lot of different songs by different artists but usually do not buy the entire album, just individual songs.

Side note on Pink. She is terrific. I agree with y'all. Really great voice. SO far above the average Pop Tart. Her videos are by far the best around nowadays, too.

I saw her do the most incredible dance tribute to Janet Jackson on MTV's "Icon." She danced to "Miss You Much" and it was a show stopper! Watch this whole thing. She, Usher and Mya are amazing!

So...artists that began their career in the 90s, or that I began listening to in the 90s?

Or does that distinction matter?

I forgot about John Denver & Neil Diamond (and of course, SPINAL TAP)! Love them. Our band covers some Coldplay, at my keyboardist's insistance, but I think they're U2 ripoffs (and I'm not a huge U2 fan as it is). My husband is a big Sweet fan - any glam rock band, really. We danced to Gary Glitter's "I Love You Love Me" on our wedding day (that and "Paradise" natch). I dig that stuff a lot.

My "American Idol" is Melinda Doolittle, Bugsy. The woman can sing ANYTHING. I fakkin' LOVE her, and I can't WAIT for her CD to come out.

Oh wow - here we go:

Queensryche
Slipknot
Marilyn Manson
Green Day
Breaking Benjamin
Cold
Cradle of Filth
Michael Buble
Devildriver
Disturbed
Evanescense
Jon Oliva's Pain
Killswitch Engage
Linkin Park
Live (they're from my hometown and used to be called "Public Affection" and got booed off the stage at a battle of the bands I went to)
Seventh Key
Stone Sour
System of a Down
Tourniquet
Vacuum

I could go on for hours about acts I "discovered" and only recently started listening to since I've been able to just buy from iTunes. I've got Barry Manillow, Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble in addition to all of the acts listed above and a few heavier ones (including Spinal tap) on my ipod.

As for Spinal Tap..... all I can say is...

Big Bottom
Big Bottom
Talk about bum cakes

She is so great! My favorite on the show this year, too, in a mostly boring year for AI. However, I have heard that Lakisha knocks the walls down on the tour with her performance of "I Have Nothing" (I think that is the song. A Whitney song)
Ash: Oh wow - here we go:

I know. If I started listing all the music on my iPod and computer...... I have plenty of music for all occasions and the variety is pretty much mind numbing -- r & b, classical, soundtracks, country, hard rock, soft rock .... I think we can agree that we all like lots of different music.

And DO NOT get me started on Spinal Tap!!

Nice topic .
I do not follow any bands of the 80s or 90s.
I picked up stuff over the years but it has all pretty much been traded.
I don't mind listening to it.
I am heavy on the 70s and allways go back to that.
But what I did do and do do these days, is pick up stuff from just before I started listening to music.
I started in the old days with 'In Rock' 'Paranoid" 'Zep 4' and on and on.
And ofcourse also the bands I missed first time around because I was to busy with the one I was HOOKED on
Many of the bands just before inspired the bands of mid to late 70s that I like ,and there were a hotbed of bands there.
That stuff is what I sink my teeth into .
My wife follows the new stuff,so I get my dose from there .
My 8 year old son is getting into music also, and he wanted to go and see Nickleback so off we went and I was pleasantly surprised.
So I can live with the new stuff, but am faithfull to 66-79 approximately.

I didn't bother seeing the tour (they opened the tour here in Ft. Lauderdale) because I was disappointed with the season this year, even though this was the first season I've watched from beginning to end save the season finale because I dropped it like a hotcake After Melinda was voted off - what a crock of horseshit...but I digress. I bet Lakisha does sing the hell out of that song. She was one of the better ones, as was Phil Stacey, who, for some reason, got a lot of negative criticism. Anyhow, Melinda made all worthwhile for me. I have never been so enamroued with an Idol contestant as I was with her. Damn good singer. I'm glad we agree on that! Whew...I was afraid I was gonna have to fight ya. LOL ;-)

My pool of favorites definitely gets thinner when going into the 90s and beyond, but there are some I dig...

Barenaked Ladies
Ben Folds (greatest songwriter of his generation, IMO)
Foo Fighters
Soundgarden
Live
Alanis Morrisette
Smashing Pumpkins
Frou Frou/Imogen Heap
Spock's Beard
Catherine Wheel

...and the mighty Porcupine Tree, who IMO belong in the pantheon with any number of classic-rock types.

I still adore the first Pearl Jam album, but not much else they've done.

I was never a big fan of Green Day back in the Dookie era, but American Idiot seriously turned me around on them.

My Chemical Romance's latest album The Black Parade is fantastic ...though it hasn't made me a fan of their back-catalog.

And a friend recently turned me on to Coheed & Cambria, but I still haven't really made up my mind about them.

You couldn't have said it better - was the same for me as well. Boulevard of Broken Dreams is one of my top 10 favorite songs in the last 20 years.

OK, I know we are going to get killed for turning this into an Idol thread, BUT....I agree with ya. Of course, I have watched it since Kelly Clarkson won and I meant to add her to my list of faves above. I saw the tour last year which was great, but have no desire to see this year's, even with Melinda on the bill.

Now back to the regular programming! :)

Gin Blossoms
Goo Goo Dolls (love their entire catalog)
Smashing Pumpkins (burned out on them after Mellon Collie)
The Refreshments
Third Eye Blind (just started listening to them again)
Green Day (Nimrod is my hands down fave)
Rammstein (I needed something to fill the Accept void)
Stone Temple Pilots
Alanis (Jagged Little Pill is fabulous)
Sponge

However, I don't listen to the Pumpkins, STP, or Sponge much these days.

More recently . . .
Hinder
Three Days Grace
Breaking Benjamin (absolutely LOVE this band, I listen to them every day)

I've been stuck in the 80's, Styx, Journey, etc. for years - LOL But I do love a lot of "newer" music :)

PORCUPINE TREE is one of my favorite bands. I wish that I would have listened to them in the 90's. I just seen them live 3 times recently and I'm looking forward to seeing them and hopefully interviewing them in October when they come back here!!

These are the bands/musicians that I totally enjoy & love listening to that came out after the 80's :)

Blackfield - LOVE them!!!
