A Styx Story...

Just over 10 years ago I went to see Styx for the second time... July 5th 1997. I'd seen them live for the first time ever the year before on "Return to Paradise" tour but had bad seats for that one.

This time, I was able to score tickets through the old Paradise Theatre website that the band had. I couldn't believe my luck when I got 3rd row seats... awesome.

Anyhow... a buddy and me were going... and we were meeting his girlfriend at the time who was coming with a friend of hers.

The friend and me hit it off pretty well... and my buddy contemplated sitting on the lawn with his girlfriend. I was hoping he would so her friend would sit with me... but after he decided to check out exactly where the seats where he decided his girlfriend wasn't worth that sacrifice. LOL

The show was incredible... and at the very end after the bows... Todd tossed a drumstick in my direction... only about 2-3 feet above my head. It was then that I made one of the most acrobatic leaps of my life as I jumped an impossible height (for me) and just barely snagged that drumstick right out of the air.

When we met up with the girls I showed off my prize... and the friend *really* wanted that drumstick bad... and was trying to butter me up for it. I figured I'd score a some points and finally gave it to her (even though I really didn't want to LOL).

It was a good move I guess because we started dating and 3 years later she became my wife... and I got the drumstick back We've been married almost 7 years now and have a 2 year old daughter.

And it all started that night... at a Styx concert.

O.K. I'll share mine - not <B>nearly</B> as interesting as yours - so don't get your hopes up. I was married in 95 and took my wife to her first rock concert (Styx in '96). She grew up only listening to Contemporary Christian music. After Kansas left the stage, she said rather loudly "What's that weird smell I keep smelling!?" Yep, she was smelling marijuanna for the first time. Needless to say it was the people right behind us that were toking and it made for a very embarrasing confrontation. But we laugh about it now. It's funny to hear her observations about Styx - things like "Tommy Shaw looks <I>so</I> much better with facial hair since he has all that gorgeous blonde hair that most women would kill for" and stuff like that. She also distinctly remembers that Chuck wore a "shirt with sparkles". and so on...

Anyway, thanks for letting me remember.

You know, it's funny because Styx has been responsible for SO MUCH "stuff," good & bad, over the years that it's hard to imagine they're just a music band. I guess it's all part of what makes Styx fans well, Styx fans - and all the quirkiness that goes with it. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone here who would disagree with that.

Regardless, your story was great. What's even better is that you're not alone. I've heard so many stories similar to yours that it's a bit freaky. Styx has some weird magical powers or something.

On a side note, since we're talking about Styx stories, and you did mention the '97 tour, when we went, I also managaed to score 4th row center seats, which at the time was like winning the lottery. Right as the show opened, Keith comes out sweeping the floor, and the laser-face lady tells him to "get that cigar out of his mouth." He throws the cigar out into the audience, and it lands right in my (ex)husband's lap. Of course, my husband thought it was LIT and starts jumping up and down screaming 'OMG! OMG!" It was hysterical.

OK, not as emotonally stimulating as your story, but DAMN funny. lol
