Why are there so many uber-religious Styx fans?

I've been reading through this board and there are a HELL of a lot of extremely religious Styx fans. I'm not knocking it, but I just don't understand it. Its like a Petra board over here!
Should I add some sort of testimonial to MY signature?

Religious people are more vocal about their religion on message boards. I see it on a lot of non music related forums. I don't think this is a Styx thing. The US is actually quite a religious country so it should not be surprising.

I guess I really haven't seen that here. I mean I've seen discussions on kosher food and people asking one another to pray for each other when going through difficult times - but that's about it.

I hope this doesn't turn into a "religion" flame war (seems to always happen on every board), but I've always considered the message of Styx to be very positive - they generally don't sing about the sewer of life. That's what turned me on to them in 1981.

Most people of faith (excluding radical fundamentalists) are very positive as well, so maybe that's a connection? And, yes, I know there are several on this board that are not examples of being positive!

I really dunno.

I think you may have missed a buried discussion in a thread or two a few weeks ago.

I think this is true and I also think that as people get older the tend to turm to God and embrace religion much more than the did when they were younger. The majority of STYX fans are growing older now, so the combination of a usually positive band mixed with our generation moving toward a more religious stance leads to a stronger expresssion of beliefs in this forum and others.

I've actually done the complete opposite . . . I believed somewhat in the basic tenets of Christianity when I was younger, but now I suspect that ALL organized religion is pure unadulterated self-justifying fiction. But that's just my opinion! LOL. I'm not knocking what anybody else wants to believe as long as they don't drag me into it in any way, shape or form.

Incidentally, I have also noticed an unusual number of very religious Styx fans. I have even seen said fans attempt to twist the lyrics of certain Styx songs to where they appear to support their own religious beliefs. I guess it serves some need on their part. . . much like religion itself. That's all I can think.

By the way, I mean no offense to anyone on this board who holds any deep-seated religious beliefs; I simply can't fathom them, that's all.

I think you get all stripes on any message board. I don't think Styx has any more, or fewer, religious/religion oriented fans than most other boards get....well, ok, maybe the GWAR board doesn't get many.

I am one who cannot stand religious OR political discussion on a board that is about a particular subject completely unrelated to those topics. But that is just me. There are plenty of places to go for that kind of inevitable disagreement. I don't think a Melodic Rock board is that place.

I don't know if I would call myself "uber-religioous" (that kind of sounds like a nazi). I would say that people who haven't experienced it just wouldn't understand. I was a miserable sinner before I found the lord. It is something that I cannot contain, whether I am talking in person or on the internet. Its something that I want to pass on. I think that its hard for people who don't know the lord to understand.
As for Styx, I find Styx songs very conducive to a walk with the lord. I think that is why you find so many "religous" Styx fans. If you listen to songs like "Crystal Ball", "Sing For The Day", "Dear John", and "She Cares", you will find a deeper spiritual theme.

Thats funny!

I find that there is a lot of religious sentement in Dennis's work going all the way back to the earliest albums. I think his upbringing shines through almost everything he's written. I have personally done "Show Me The Way" during a church service. I also really want to do Tommys "Fooling Yourself" during a service, I'm just waiting for the proper time.

I've heard that JY is an atheist...and a religious leader came to our church aonce and mentioned him specifically as a rock star who had dabbled in the occult. Maybe that explains his evil natured-ness toward Dennis.

Yeah.. sure he did.. How long ago was this Da.. umm I mean Rajah? 26 years ago?

Cause when I think of Rockstars dabbling with the Occult, I sure think of JY right off the bat!! Not Marilyn Manson, not Alice Cooper, not Slayer, King Diamond, etc..

And don't kid yourself.. Dennis hasn't been a saint all these years either..

This was at a time when Styx was one of the groups accused of satan worship and people were boycotting their records. I find it comical that not only would a fan a) believe it in the first place, but b) actually admit it and use it as "ammo" against him 25 years later. It explains a lot.

My normal position is not to bother to respond to what I consider asinine comments, but this one was over the edge.

Unsubstantiated, unadulterated tripe in that quoted comment.

I am not a fan of JY, but ... come ON!

First person I would question for any veracity would, of course, be "a religious leader [who] came to our church."

And what does it explain? All I said was what I heard a preacher say.

I do remember a cousellor at my summer camp bringing a tape about satanic rock music that Sxyt was on. I remember that there was a part about Snowblind having backwards messages. I cried and cried all night because I believed them. I loved Styx and I felt that my heroes had let me down. I don't know if Styx put backwards messages or not on the record. I do know that I do not think that any member of Styx is satanic now. I think if they ever played around with it (as most rock bands did in the 70s and ealry 80s) then they have repented now. Their music has been very uplifting and has helped me find God a few times when I felt abandoned.
