So what happens when you play your keyboard backing track for your #1 song at 48khz instead of 44.1khz by mistake and it all happens live at the end of your concert?

That's Hillarious !!!

I suppose it would have been professional suicide for them to just stop playing, but that's what I think they should have done....less humiliating than having this clip out on the world wide web in my opinion.

I wonder who lost their job because of this ? surely SOMEONE had to pay

Hmmm. I assumed VH had a keyboard player behind the curtain.. Allan Fitz Gerald from Night Ranger... Isn't that why Michael Lardie is with NR now? Because Allan is with VH?

I thought Allan resigned/retired from the road.

Btw.. Micheal Lardie is back with Great White, so this past summer's NR dates, some guy name Chris has been their keyboardist.. His name is on the tip of my tongue, but I can't remember.. Andrew had it posted about a month or so ago..

To be honest, that's exactly what I was afraid Van Halen live would sound like now . . . TERRIBLE! Even without the glitch, it doesn't sound like any two members of the band are playing in the same key. Dave's singing is really bad, and he looks like an idiot. Eddie's kinda throwing in these not-very-well-thought-out fill licks that are stepping on the vocals . . . YIKES!

The glitch thing is fascinating, since no one really seems to be able to get the definitive word on whether it was the guitar, the keys, whether the keys are live or pre-recorded, etc.

A fairly in-depth technical analysis here:

And still no easy answers.

Could it be something as simple as the pitch wheel on the keyboard was off from where it should have been and the keyboardist didn't notice it. Perhaps he is watching hte stage instead of listening to it and isn't aware of it until the song is over and the guys go wtf was that?

Christian Cullen has been filling in for Lardie in NR. Not sure if Lardie will return.

I know Van Halen has used Alan Fitzgerald on offstage keys since 1991. Not sure if that's the case here. Maybe they are using tapes. Or Alan could've just been out of tune, as Ash points out.
When I saw them a few weeks back I was surprised the keys on Jump started a half step above the key they are on the original album. They then performed it that way. That higher key was the one Sammy Hagar used to sing it in.

Yes, isn't that what I was implying? That he left NR to play with VH as far back as 1991? Anyway, I guess VH is now using recorded keys... They are already using pre-recording backing vocals so why not?

A musician friend of mine who also saw the show didn't think they were using tapes or sampled back up vocals but were probably using a harmonizer on Eddie & Wolfie that keeps the vocals in tune and provides automatic harmony vocals....not a lip synch, but then not totally live either, really.....Alot performers today use this from what I've heard.

Yeah, that is weird, considering that they used to tune down on almost everything for DLR back in the day. I'd also think "Jump" would be more comfortable guitar-wise in C rather than C#, so I wonder why the change.

Dunno about VH, but yeah, it's getting more widespread. IMO it's pretty astounding, in a sci-fi sort of way, that they can get that sort of thing working in real time now.

In defense of VH, I did see some of ther rehearsal videos on You Tube and they were quite enjoyable and there were no mistakes.

They really do seem to be acquitting themselves well, especially DLR. Better the expectations I had, anyway. If they extend the tour and get around to my neck of the woods next year, I'll definitely be checking it out.

I agree with both of you. I thought they sounded really good on some of the clips I have seen. And they all look very fit and healthy.

Astounding is right . . . and not in a good way either. To borrow a phrase from Dennis, "Bite me you pussies". LOL. I mean, seriously, why would you not just hired a keyboard player instead of playing to a track? Money? Are they that broke? I don't think so. And if you can't sing backing vocals, wait a sec, I just had an idea . . . HIRE SOMEONE WHO CAN FUCKING SING, YOU RETARDS! It's bad enough that shitty pop acts routinely pull this, but I can accept that because, well, they're shitty pop acts. But when a band that made its reputation playing live goes out and does it, that really gets to me. And I'm not targeting Van Halen, because I don't know if they do this or not (though it certainly looks like it from this clip), but I've seen it with other major acts that ought to damn well be able to pull it off if they wanted to. Especially here in Nashville . . . from Shania, to Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Sara Evans, and on and on and on, it would actually be shorter to list the artists here who CAN sing than the ones who can't. PATHETIC.

Ahhhh, a rant. Very cleansing!

LOL, Sterling! I do agree with you about many of those Nashville acts. I heard Tim McGraw sing "live" on something and I was astonished at how awful his voice was. And who can forget Ashlee Simpson, who now is supposedly putting down those "fakers" who populate American Idol. That is the ONE place where people are actually singing, with no help or enhancements.

I think about that quote of DDY's a LOT, when I hear people who I know are not singing singing.

I am sure VH is trying to keep most of the money in their pockets, so maybe they cut down on extra personnel? Not sure.
